No Names or Faces Allowed: Secret Hong Kong Car Collections | Capturing Car Culture

2024 ж. 10 Мам.

Larry Chen continues to immerse himself in Hong Kong's car culture and takes you along to secret collections, where he can't even show the owners' faces or use their names. In the collections he can show you, the owners discuss how to disguise such large collections, how they navigate around Hong Kong's culture, and which cars receive the least amount of attention.

  • Hey everyone, I just wanted to clear up what I said in the video. I was wrong about the government taking away your vehicles in Hong Kong for no reason at all. I messed up and I should not have said that. I need to be more careful when I make these grand statements. What I should have said was that they WILL find a reason to take away your vehicle if they choose to. Even if it's unfounded and not true, EVEN if the vehicle is stock and they think it's modified. As you have seen in the past video where the cop stopped the NSX-R owner because he does not have an airbag, even though the NSX-R never came with one in the first place. The cars can be taken away for as little as aftermarket wheels, or a different radio / head unit, as was stated in the last videos. This is the same for the storage places where the cars and collections actually live, the collectors are deathly afraid of their garages taken away. Again, the government will find a reason. I've been shooting cars for 20 years and I've traveled to so many places, but I've never EVER been in a situation where I have seen so many people afraid to let their car be seen online. While I was in Hong Kong I legitimately saw hundreds of cars where the owner did not want me to photograph it, or show the plate, or show their face. HUNDREDS! We visited so many incredible collections in Hong Kong and the owners were legitimately scared for me to shoot anything even on my phone because they didn't want to attract any attention from the authorities. Even just cars that showed up to some of the meets that we held, they did not want their face to be seen, they did not want me to photograph their car, they just wanted me to SEE the car for some reason. If you want to read the actual law it's here section 80. Notice "the reason to believe" verbage www.elegislation.gov.hk/hk/cap374!en Any police officer who, as a result of an examination of a vehicle under subsection (1), has reason to believe that-(a) the vehicle has been involved in an accident;(b) the vehicle is not roadworthy; (Amended 3 of 1991 s. 8)(ba) the vehicle does not comply with vehicle emission standards; or (Added 3 of 1991 s. 8)(c) the vehicle does not comply with this Ordinance or any condition subject to which the vehicle licence in respect of the vehicle was issued,may-(i) direct the driver of the vehicle to drive it to such vehicle examination centre or police station as the police officer may specify; or (ii) direct the driver and any other person to leave the vehicle and himself drive or remove the vehicle or cause it to be driven or removed to any vehicle examination centre or police station, and may cause the vehicle to be detained at a vehicle examination centre or police station for not more than 72 hours while the vehicle is examined by a vehicle examiner.

    • If you so vehemently believe the government is like this, then why would you dismiss owner's (ie. XRX) request to blur out the license plates? Do you just not care about these owners that so graciously let you film in their garage?

    • Also after seeing how you completely disrespected the car collectors featured in your video, it was probably wise for the "HUNDREDS" of owners to not want to be in your photo/video

I apologized to him for not being able to fix things sooner. • Thanks and much appreciated for Larry Chen reaching out to me and solved all below matters!!!!! Disclaimer: We have never approved any contents shown in this video and are deeply disappointed by the lack of respect from Larry Chen. 1. We have reminded him to blur a certain object in the garage. *ignored by him. 2. We needed to see the draft before posting. * He agreed but did not give us the draft. 3. We asked to blur the object after the video was released (doable), and his response was “we are making a fuss for nothing” 4. Without approving the video beforehand, none of his speech in his videos could be said to accurately represent any of the car collectors. We are just car lovers sharing our passion with no intention at all to challenge anyone.

    • Asking for privacy is not whining. If you have watched or followed XRX’s channel, he’s one of the most legit, down to earth, real, honest guys among Hong Kong KZheadrs or any KZheadrs sharing cars around the world, he tries out every car he can, and tests every parts he can, every mod/ mechanic shop he can. Other huge channels like Seen Through Glass has taken videos of his collection as well. He’s nowhere that “dirty money” guy like you guys are saying. As car geeks in Hong Kong, we were very happy to share our car culture with anyone we know, BECAUSE it’s not easy to enjoy cars here, that’s why we were doing all these meets with Larry, however, this time, he really disappointed us fans in general, and some of you guys too cuz XRX is one of the biggest car channels in Hong Kong. I don’t understand why it is a problem to ask for some privacy when we are letting you film stuff in our own private space, I 100% am disgusted too when XRX literally shares everything on KZhead but there are these accusing irresponsible comments too.

    • Exactly. Every regional car lover is just as insanely passionate as any other, just for a different genre. There are some people who love classic American muscle even outside of the US, and there are loads of people who adore Italian cars or German cars. Then there's JDM. JDM lovers are intense.

    • Though this is a JDM-focused video, I can assure you the passion of American cars in HK are equally amazing. There are people who own and take their American classics out (such as a Pontiac GTO and a C3 Corvette) for Sunday morning drives. There was even a RHD converted Challenger Hellcat for sale about a month ago.

Living in Europe, its just easy to see the hugely valuable and mega money JDM and super/hyper car collections and to think that is nearly all there is to see. So its really good to see some of the other people, who are just as passionate and enthusiastic, even if the cars might not be worth nearly as much as a Z-Tune or a NSX-R. This meant these legislations have been in force since 1991 (for 33 years now!) Hong Kong was under British colonial rule until 1997 so it was the British Colonial government which enacted these legislations (in 1991). If you check with the laws in UK, you will find that UK has similar legislations (see Road Traffic Act 1988 section 67: Testing vehicles on roads)

  • Love this series, keep it going! First guy is a double edged sword for the car community. It's great that he owns all this very expensive car history. But it's also terrible that they're just garage kept and never see the road. LFA with 200km? "Do you drive any of these cars anymore? Not really to be honest." It's just a waste. And I get it, Larry is highlighting the difficulties of owning cars in HK, but he seems more interested in the value of them. Cont'd: I think the car companies are 51% to blame than these "I need to keep my value" owners, since they just didn't make more of each of these cars that are now "collecting dust" sitting in peoples garages and show rooms and never touching pavement because of "rarity and value". I think these companies should re-make all these cars as like a "rebirth" series. It wouldn't hurt the value of the originals one cent because you'd have vin numbers to know which is original and which is the remade model. So we'd get to see more of these beautiful cars on the road, and then everyone else can garage queen the originals if they want. (And the originals would very likely increase in value because of the popularity boom, it's a win-win)

  • They do not want the government to know that they have all these cars!? If they have 200 cars in their collection they are in the names of 200 different people, or...🤔? Because the government should already know that they have all these cars, unless they arrived illegaly in the country.🙄

    • you can import the car but not doing the registration. goverment wont know you own that and wont charge the registration tax. but you can use the viechcle test license to drive the car slightly.

  • Maybe some cars are supposed not being shown but being traded soon. Also, sometimes it is not the problem about cars, it is the problem about spaces: There may be some troubles about land use, exposing the venue is not cool, meanwhile they want to show their collections 😂

  • To be totally fair with you... The Subaru Legacy RS type RA is by far one of the most rare car's in this video. Subaru made none, people got them for cheap and drove the crap out of them and they are all gone.... Even trying to just find a Legacy RS thats not totally clapped out is next to impossible. Otherwise Great video!
