This week in the Château cottage update, Tracy starts on grouting the beautiful tiled floor in the cottage salon and shows us how the lovely warm colour has turned out.
Tony shows us some of he’s handy work with the fantastic staircase we picked up from Facebook at the beginning of the year. Now fully fitted, it really is a fantastic focal point for the cottage. Plus, he has finished all the room layout upstairs, creating a beautiful open space.

About us,
We are a family from the North-East of England following our dream to restore a beautiful abandoned french Château. We discovered the heart stopping Château De Lalacelle in summer of 2020, this beautiful architectural monument Is set in the countryside of North-West France.
The moment we visited the Château we all fell in love, from the beautiful sweeping landscape and forests, to its stunning untouched interiors and magnificent spiral staircase in the turret.
Unfortunately Château De Lalacelle has been abandoned for a number of decades so will need a lot of restoration and DIY.

I love how Tracy and Tony have remained "true" to the fabric of the building, making their choices to preserve and display as much as possible of the old original structure and re-using old beams, etc. from the building. They could have made it quite modern and "convenient" inside, but the building would have lost something, and as Ton said "it's not a guest house." And all that extra work to give the smaller rooms ceilings that display the beam work will make them feel bigger than they actually are! Whoever stays in those rooms is going to know they were craftsman built and feel honoured to be there.

I completely agree with you that all you need upstairs is the toilet and sink. The spacious feel pf the layout lends a touch of majesty to the cottage because you showcase the height and the gorgeous 18th century beams. It's just lovely, and the salon paint color is so warm and inviting. I'm loving the series.

The upstairs of the cottage is going to be gorgeous. I love how all the original beams are the stars of the stage up there.
It's absolutely mind-boggling how well the cottage is turning out. At the beginning, I couldn't begin to visualize the transformation which has occurred. I think the best example of the change is taking a "might as well" staircase and creating a really harmonious and aesthetically-pleasing main entrance. Really, really impressive - this project belongs in an architectural magazine.
Your collective eye, experience and knowledge for the special considerations is making all the difference. Brilliant journey! ❤

Looking good everyone! I know how much hard work this is! My husband and I remodeled an 1850’s farmhouse. The struggle is real! You are all doing a wonderful job! Give yourselves needed breaks now and then so you don’t get burned out.
Upstairs is looking absolutely spectacular. You have not lost any of the grandeur or beauty of the upstairs area. Totally love it. You guys rock!

I greatly enjoy watching all of you work as a family and friends from Carmel, Indiana. I renovated many homes over my life, and it is a commitment, but it can be loads of fun and relaxing from sanding floors with a hand sander to restoring rotting window frames. My homes I improved were 3065 Warrington Avenue, Shaker Heights, Ohio and two in Wyoming, Ohio--200 Worthington Avenue and 101 Elm Street both in Wyoming/Cincinnati, Ohio. I find watching all of you and your family inter-workings and accomplishments very relaxing-educational and motivating.
It's so energising watching you folks turn these building into a real home the skills and application you all show are outstanding

The kitchen is a big space .... you've made great progress in the cottage. 1/2 a cottage up is better than when you started.
Clearing the kitchen and bathroom sounds like a "down tools, and cameras, and all hands on deck to get it done" time. You'll be finished in an hour. I love the wall colour in the salon. Excellent choice. It draws the eye up to those gorgeous beams.

Simply massive progress. Such a good idea to postpone curtains in favour of the hot water cylinder if you've got the electrician coming in. The more you can get him / her to fit when they're in, the more comfortable you'll feel in a couple of weeks. Fantastic. 🥰

Amazing! It's going to be a dream. Also, considering you guys have been at it for less than a year, and there were only a couple of you there for a large portion of that time, you have made tremendous progress! Also when you take into account all that you've accomplished outside as well, you guys make me tired lol.

The Cottage looks so different now and the upstairs is coming along with new ideas popping up as Tony and Tracy putter on with the arduous tasks ahead of them. Wondering if they found another light to compliment the one in the Living room? The Kitchen and Bathroom will look grand when they are done as well. Loving the cottage updates on Wednesday and the Chateau updates on Sunday. Fewer mental gymnastics to keep up with all of the amazing progress. Hopefully all goes well with the electrician and plumbing so you can have a few more creature comforts. It has been a marathon. Maybe you can all get to a point where you can catch your breath and enjoy your accomplishments before the next big wave of work hits. If you ever get tired of taking the stairs for a shower, you could probably add a shower to the upper level next to the bathroom. Understand not wanting to lose the seating area by the window. Ash, winter is a great time to amend your soil with fertilizer if it is available. It is "just" one more thing to add to the mountain of a list.

Wise to use grey grout on the floors Tracy! I personally hate white grout as it gets so dirty! Staircase is fabulous! It won’t be long now before the kitchen and bathrooms are done and you’ll move in!
I’m the same, i like all the flooring the same throughout. What are you doing with upstairs floors? Hardwood flooring throughout the upstairs would be amazing with the stonewalls and beams, but costly for such a big area. Carpeting is another alternative, it would add warmth too. I’m sure whatever you decide it will be stunning. I love the open concept master bedroom. A four poster bed with curtains on all sides would be spectacular in that setting and give you some privacy as well as sleep in time when curtains are drawn.
Good idea to have bed curtains for privacy especially when the guest room is used. You could also have a folding screen to use against the powder room corner near the stairs for changing clothes. You could also have some wall hooks and a laundry hamper there as well.You could also stand the folding screen at the foot of the bed to screen the bed if you didn’t want bed curtains. It wouldn’t block the expanse of the room and would still allow easy movement around the room.
I’m getting so excited watching the cottage come to fruition. All that is being done is so tastefully blending the old with the new. I wish I could be nearby to help you with 2 more hands. It’s all terribly exciting to see it coming to finalisation. Then the shock when I saw there are 2 huge jobs in the kitchen and bathroom 🤣😊. Haha a little something left over for the new year to keep you busy.

I can only imagine how satisfied you will be when the cottage salon is done. Will Mum and Dad move in as sleeping quarters for winter even if not all is functional?

Is there already a septic field in place for the cottage and chateau? Amazing job on everything. Wonderful to see the vintage charm isn’t being lost. Are you lime pointing those beautiful walls in the downstairs bathroom and kitchen?
I’m pretty sure the bathroom walls will stay natural. Don’t know about the kitchen. Depends on cupboard placement and need for back splashes I imagine
Wall colour in the salon looks great far better than the yellow. Things are motoring on at a pace now surprised Tracy hasn´t already fitted the kitchen lol she doesn´t hang around when something needs doing, guess you left poor Ash locked in the chateaux and he cannot come out until the 3rd floor is finished lol.
