Why Does My Car Axle Click? Diagnosing and Explaining Axle Noises
Shop for New Auto Parts at 1AAuto.com 1aau.to/c/84/aG/axles-and-axle...
An axle click is a repetitive clicking or clunking nose you hear while your vehicle is moving. It will typically click faster as the vehicle moves faster. The cause behind this is often a problem in a CV joint due to exposure, or wear. Len shows you how CV axles work, and why it's important to keep their boots in good shape to prevent the dreaded axle click!

Order a new what? You didn't specify at the end of the video. Order a new axle? Or new CV Boot with CV Joints?

Do you have an a mail to send a video maybe you. An with explaining sounds lie to u ? 2004 Acura TL 4.2L manual
Been fixing cars and trucks for 40 years and have watched hundreds of KZhead videos. Lots of great mechanics out there, but this guy is the best one for providing on-camera instruction. A1 Auto is very fortunate to have him.
These videos are why I buy from 1A Auto…would take me forever without your detailed, and to the point instruction.
+Max Trap Thank you very much for your support!
Great vid, one small mistake was you identified the outer bearings “race” it is in fact a cage. Bearing races are the surfaces that bear weight the cage is what keeps the balls/rollers separated and inside the bearing
Good video, my very first car was a 1994 Mazda Protege and that thing had the loudest clicking half shafts I've ever heard. And it all started with a torn boot, now 15 years later I inspect all the boots on all my cars. Good preventive maintenance.
+Mike Beckham Thanks for checking us out! 1AAuto.com
great explanation and super thorough detail on installing one, going through this right now myself but i already got the old axle out, good tip at the end about not separating the tripod bearing from the boot on the install.
Be sure to appreciate how much easier it is to turn after new axles are installed. First time I did some full turns after replacing them on a GMC Yukon I was truly amazed.
I admire your sarcasm very much! It's refreshing to know that folks still understand it.
Great educational video! I've never had to replace an axle yet, so I don't know them in super detail yet.

@@1AAuto thanks, you save my butt
I learned more than any other Scotty Kilmer DIY vid. Keep it up man I heard this clicking ln the right axle when I hit a pot hole hard with a big bang! Then I noticed it kept clicking and clicking. Took it to the Toyota Dealership my car being a 2010 Toyota Corolla LE. They replace my 2 axles for $1,500!!! Then I hear it again for many months everyday I drive the car. This week it has gotten worse and now the clicking is accompanied with a weird squel or grind sound while turning in my driveway

Thank you for you lesson, it was much helpful for me. I was trying to fix my ball joint, wich took me a lot of time to sort, but during the process I separate the cv from the axle. After manage to put it back I was wondering if it should have a click to connect to something inside. So your video helped me to understand better the procedure.
Thanks for explanation cv joints was always a mystery. 👍❤️
Thanks, that was super helpful! I had an idea of how a CV joint worked, but not quite. Now I feel better about replacing mine. Parts already ordered.
Your video very professional and direct to the point. Not like other videos try to be funny and telling stories about unnecessary stuff and they are distractive. I like your job man. .

“Virhicle” 😂
I can I hear this now 😂 I would have never noticed .
I hear "vehircle" lol. Always stands out to me too though lol
💀
I knowww, love it though.
I didn't hear it at first I had to go back 😂😂😂
YO! I was installing new axels and managed to separate an axel by accident. I was super worried I screwed something up. I got it back in buy taping it back into place many, many times with a mallet. Now that I have a clearer picture of what's inside it makes a lot of sense why that worked. Every time I smacked it I was jiggling those bearings back into their slots. Thanks for the video!
This video was really helpful in understanding how a cv axel actually works. Great Video!!!
GREAT DETAILS EXPLANATION . I LEFT MY CAR JACK UP WHILE FRONT WHEEL HANGING OFF THE GROUND FOR 4 MONTHS . AND NOW MY CV AXLES IS OFF PLACEMENT AND NOW IS MAKING NOISES AS IT DRIVING. MY ADVISE NEVER HANG THE CAR UP FOR LONG PERIOD OF TIME BETTER OFF LET IT SIT ON GROUND INSTEAD. HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS REPAIRS FOR STUPID MISTAKE.
Outstanding video. You really explained things well. Thanks!
I'm so glad I stumbled upon this video and the one where you change the axle on a liberty. I just wish I had those air tools... Gotta use those old school bicep tools on my axle.🤪
Thank you!!!! I separated the axel on my 09 Corolla 1.8l , was changing the strut the knuckle came down ,tore the boot and it separated from the axel, managed to put it back in but now got to replace both axles
Amazing video. I appreciate the education, explanation and examples shown on this video. This channel is doing a great job with the diagnosing and repair videos 😃
Thank you Guys!! When I was changing my front suspension, I accidentally pulled the inner joint.. and when luckily I’ve put it back I got very curious how it is inside the boot! Thank you guys, for this video! I subscribe

Great Video, I’m about to replace both front axels on my vehicle soon. I don’t know it was so easy to do.
Nice video =) Just one for the road (npi) 2:55 If you cant wait for new clamps , and need to get going without OCD alerts, you can just mount one extra identical screw clamp 180 degrees opposite to the other so they cancel out the unbalance. Probably obvious to commoners, but there are always those people, that makes it worth mentioning =)
+Eivind Thorsen Thanks for the feedback and tip!
Plus the idea is bogus on the face of it. Wheel weights come in ounce increments and are put 7-9 inches away from the axle centerline. The weight of a clamp is tenths of an ounce and are about an inch from the axle centerline. A screw clamp will work fine and not affect balance significant, but if you don't believe the second clamp idea is extremely valid.
Took my Tacoma in for a RnR C.V. axle, have no idea what happened but afterwards the front axle locked up in 4 WD..SURPRISINGLY the shop took full responsibility and ended up putting a new front differential in it...I won't go back there but kudos for manning up to their costly mistake..
Hi Thanks this really helped alot but seems I would need to replace my inner Cv j because the rings were falling off but the noise it's less, vibration gone and the steering handles well. Aslong as I keep my revs between 2-3rpms its drivable
I got lucky with my CV joints. Ball joint popped out and so did the CV joint, reversing in a parking lot. Towed home. Replaced lower control arm and managed to get the CV joint back in. By constantly pushing and jiggling as I spun the axle around (For like 10 minutes straight). My boot also came off, so I could see where to start them. In the winter time of course. Always gotta happen in the winter.
You guys are so informative, thanks
Great video, Very helpful. I have a 06 BMW 530xi E60. I had the passenger axle replaced and it keeps coming out of the transfer case. Any idea why this can happen?
Excellent Segment
This is a really cool video. As someone with no car knowledge other than issues that pop up with my own old car along the way, I have learned alot, and it's entertaining :-)
Me too....
Thank you so much man. Helpful video. I think I separated the axel and was watching videos just to understand! Thanks
Excellent video with a great visual demonstration of how a CV joint really works by showing the two different joints themselves. A real "A-1" demonstration. ;-D Thanks!
Starting to rely on you guys more and more! Great video.
Nice video very helpful...blessings from Puerto Rico.
I changed my upper control arms, on both sides of course of my 2012 GMC Sierra and the axle did pop out on the driver side. I was able to twist and put it back in and the whole assembly seems to be turning ok now. Am I good you think or should I peel the boot out and check? I like how you demonstrated what those other clamps would do if used.
you folks have some of the best videos.
Woah thanks for the help with explaining more in depth and showing an example!!! Thanks A1 Auto!!!
Quick Question: will tightening the axle nut fix play between the drifeshaft and hub splines causing a clunk on load changes? AKA 'axle-ping'. Thanks
Excellent demonstration. Thank you
Great video! educational - dealing with needing to replace one on my gf's jetta. Also loved the Speed Racer reference.
Great video now i know what's inside that rubber boot. thanks
Que bueno tu video Y muy buena demostracion,
Wow thank you! This is the sound I'm hearing when I drive
Thanks for the video , and how do you install the clamp , thanks once again👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Great video, I got a question, I’ve just fit a lift kit front and back on my 4x4 and now when I’m turning hard right only when I’m coming to a stop I hear a loud clinking sound coming from under my driver side front guard and not sure if CV or wheel hub bearings?
Thanks to teaching me about the c v axle
Thank you so much for explaining how the bearings on the inner joint have to be spread outwards to go back in if your axle falls out. I've been trying to get my axle back in, and it will not go back in, and I'm pretty sure this is why.
I have the same noise like on this video. As I speed up, klicking is faster, and noise increases on gas release. In my case I can hear noise only above 60km/h till 130km/h. Did you have same issues with that car on video? Thank's 👍😊
Cv boot brook all the way around the clamp your info was helpful
Thanks for your time dude ..I am trying to rreplace one cv axle 2002 chevy trailblazer

Great carefully done closeups of tha joint - really never knew how complex it was …. The axels are one of the major costs I keep spending on my car- front axels keep lasting 45k every 4x yrs - I’ll neve have it done at Firestone nor mavis.
Companies don't fix cars, the technicians they employ all have names.
Thanks for very good complete explanation
Good explanation. Thanks
ty u actually did answer my question I was looking at so many videos, but you answer my question I have a 1999 pathfinder Nissan. I made an appointment to fix it in a week, but I need to go to work.
Very educating, I understand how important it is to have the ball joints with grease dirt free and not just add more without cleaning it first. Thank you.
Very nice presentation. Love it, superb / outstanding presention.

Hi guy i noticed that one of my rear axle inner boot rubber closer to the diff was torn and most of the grease had come out, while i was putting back grease in it i saw pieces of the pin metals falling out. Does this mean my axle needs to be replaced? Thank you in advance.
Great video guys.! Loud and clear. Easy to understand good camera work. I got a lot from this

Unfortunately I watch this video too late, that just happened to me and I busted the axle boot putting too much pressure on it. Long story short don't do any repairs if you not sure enough. Great video !!!!
Right. I was working on removing the lower control arm on my vehicle and end it up disconnecting the joints just like on the video. Should have done the research before attempting the repair.
Love watching these videos I just ordered my fuel pump through you guys thanks!!!

What no my suz 2011 traverse shakes a lil also makes clunking noise when I go over bump. Got new stunts, from y'all by the way y'all are Awesome. It sounds to me that's my problem. I want to know if there are other symptoms.
Very good explanation
Thank you so much for your information, it really answeredany questions 🙏🙏🙏🙏.

Excelente, gracias señor.very good, thank sir. I need help with my tail spoiler light in my 2017 Nissan Sentra Sr turbo
I inspected the underneath of my 2013 explorer and didn’t notice any torn boots or any play in the cv axles or the ubolts on the rear driveshaft. Something was clicking while I was driving and eventually the wheels “locked up” since I didn’t physically see or feel anything wrong I took it to the shop for repairs and am currently awaiting diagnosis. Really interested to find out what the problem is.
great video, I learn today not how to repair my car Axle, now where do I buy the long tool to remove the Axle?
Verry nice explanation😎 👍
On my car the rings around those needles in the inner joint bearings weren't stopped by any ring or such so they just all fell out. I later rebuilt the bearings but lost a couple, there is a gap of at most two needles in each of the bearings. They seem to spin normally and I haven't taken the car for a test run yet but I hope it won't cause too much of an issue...
I fixed my CV boot just by re-greasing through the crack and then covering it entirely with RTV. A year later...still running perfectly without any noises. That method only works if you catch it before the bearings go out...and if you're like me and drive a cheap beater car
+Ananth Narayanan Thanks for the tip!
LOL, my friends whole car is held together with RTV and Marine Tex epoxy.
You guys have great videos some of the best I’ve seen however I’ve never bought auto parts from you who make your parts are they good quality parts I’m in the market for CV joints both fronts on a front wheel drive 2003 Toyota Highlander and does your passenger side front come with the bearing already on it what’s the price thanks
I believe also when these go up your tires will go bald as well ,inside tread will whare down and will cost you a new pair of tires, going through this process right at this moment, great vid.
I had the same dreaded click on my 2002 Gwagon but in end it was the front short drive shaft from transmission to the transfer case. Pulled it out and insides of the U-joints on both ends were dried out.
Great explanation, thanks!
A very clear explanation.....
Great helpful video Bro. Thanks a lot!
I didn't hear any answers to, "Why Does My Car Axle Click?" That's why I clicked on the video link.
Possible dust, sand.
The cv internals are worn. Normally you will see pitting/grooves on the race or cv housing.
Dirt?
That's a good point Tim. I think around the 5:00 mark, Len is addressing it when he talks about dirt and debris in the outer joint. But I would have liked to have seen one that had gone bad and was clicking pulled apart to actually show the close up of what is causing it instead of seeing a new one in perfect condition.
Hey that's right... Lol
Hello great video I recently replaced my cv axles the old ones clicked on the right side after replacing them and the wheel bearings rotors brakes and outer tie rods the clicking is still there not as fast and loud as before but it’s there any ideas why I’m stumped it’s all new
mine look fine like new but i hear click clic lcik especially if i run backfwrd turing right, camry 2008 now they sell regreasing kit but i wonder if its gonna fix the clicking noise!
Yes I do like you video I just want to know if you took a lot Toyota Tacoma 2010 4 cilindros handicap my truck is making a clicking noise in the back wheels maybe you can tell me what's going on with that
Great information and examples.
Beautiful demonstration.
Thank you so much for this video...
Very very helpful! Thank you!
hello there Nice video do you deal with vintage cars ? got a subaru vivio 4wd 1993 and desperate need two drive shaft left and right . let me know thank you very much !!!!
Excellent video. Thank you!
I have a 2015 sierra 4x4 that i purchased a new set of wheel bearings from u guys…so the issue i am having is a loud whirring sound along with a shake the whirring will stop if i press the gas but as soon as i let off whirring starts again can it be my cv joints or could it be my wheel bearings again it is similar to the issues i had that made me purchase wheel bearings in the first place
I really enjoyed this it was informative thanks
Thanks man. Such a great video 👍
Yuo the best mechanic in the planet this fix May problem 😮
Hi I had a problem with the inner cv joint after replacing the boot. where it will just pop out with the cv clamps on. I re done it 5 times then got fed up and ordered the whole shaft unit. Is it meant to pop off or has a lock on it just like the outer cv joint Or you just need tight clamps.thanks
Thanks for the Video sir , on how the CV joint works, and what happens when the boots are torn.It s always the outer CV joint that gets defective after dirt ,water gets in it.Most front wheel drive cars have this problem.Manufactures want to save cost.If I have a choice , I will go for a Rear wheel car .
+Pragasam Supiahs Thanks for the feedback!
@@1AAuto Welcome Sir.
Great job!!! Thank you. I may have separated my cv joint when installing new struts. When I apply the brakes the steering wheel jumps a little. And the car moves also. What did I do wrong? Thanks!
+Mark Slusz We wouldn't be able to diagnose an issue like that here, you may want to have a local mechanic take a look at it. Thanks for checking us out! 1aau.to/m/Shop-1AAuto-c
Could be a lower control arm bushings . Was in a car when i let go of the brakes you could feel the car jump/move a lot .
