    • This is pretty helpful. I have an inconsistent knock sound coming from the engine bay somewhere. Mechanic couldn't identify it and it's not entirely consistent with any specific activity. Sometimes driving over bumpy road will generate it, other times just turning will. It's low frequency in occurrence. This video is helpful since I'm guessing it's a suspension component somewhere or possibly sub-frame bolts. Maybe a video on how feasible it is for a DIY driver to install a camera or microphone in the engine bay to generate data for review? I think if I could replicate the sound for a mechanic, it would help them. Thanks for the video!

It serves no function, but only makes it difficult to hear what is being said and above all how the various knocking sounds sound.

  • A couple of additional comments. When it comes to front end parts like tie rods and ball joints, you typically won't hear or feel anything when they start to go bad, even it there's some play. These are two of the worst things that can break on a vehicle when you're driving. They need to be checked on a regular basis even if there are no drivability issues. Also, your method of checking the ball joints isn't quite right. When a ball joint starts to go bad, the play is up and down. You check by jacking the car up and getting the wheels a few inches off the ground. You then put a pry bar under the tires and pry upwards. In the video, you put the pry bar in between the ball joint and control arm, and pulled down. You have to go the other way because the springs are already putting a great deal of downward force on the ball joint. Going upward relieves the tension and allows you to see the play. If the ball joint gets to be so bad to where you can see the play by just putting your hands on the wheel and move it without the help of a pry bar, it should have already broken. I'm going into a lot of detail here because when a ball joint or tie rod actually breaks, you instantly lose both your steering and brakes. You have absolutely no control over the vehicle.

    • From a safety standpoint, the tie rod ends are what matters the most on the rack. Other issues involving the rack are probably not going to manifest themselves in the form of a knock. If its a late model vehicle, you'll probably have some DTC's present that will point to the rack having issues.

      @valkman761@valkman761 Жыл бұрын
    • @@valkman761 How do you check to see if a strut has play?

      @AT-wl9yq@AT-wl9yq10 ай бұрын
    • @@AT-wl9yq While having the wheel jacked up and strut extended, grab the tire in 12 and 6 o'clock positions and pull/push alternatively with your hands. This should reveal a strut with play in it.

      @valkman761@valkman76110 ай бұрын
    • @@valkman761 I think you may be confusing another type of issue with a strut problem. The strut housing is a solid piece of metal. It doesn't connect to a vehicle in a way that would be possible for any type of play to occur. You may be thinking of the top strut plate/bearing, that can wear out over time. But even with that, you wouldn't diagnose it by checking for play at the wheel. There's always tension on it even when you lift the wheels off the ground. If you do a little research on the issue, you'll find many ways to check for a bad strut. What you're suggesting with play when you move the wheel in not one of them. Its practically impossible. Or, you could be talking about something else and this is just a miscommunication.

I just changed the swaybar links on both sides thinking it would fix the problem, but it didn't do the job. My next guess is maybe the balljoint? Any thoughts on what might be causing this vibration on my driver-side tire? At some moments it feels like the vibration hopes over to the passenger side tire as well.

  • I have a Mitsubishi Galant that I've virtually replaced the whole front end on. New quick struts, lower control arm with ball joint, inner/outer tie rods, sway bar links. Still have an occasional pop when turning and also have what sounds like a single metallic clicking or popping noise when hitting a pothole or a good dip in the road or even sometimes when the suspension shifts or just backing up slowly. Everything appears to be tight.....

  • You could periodically liberally spray 303 Protectant on ALL rubber parts underneath your vehicle . This will greatly help with resisting drying out and cracking .

  • I had a knocking sound when going over bumps or moving slowing and turning into and out of a parking bay. The fault found by the dealership was front subframe bolts where not torqued to spec. This is a brand new vehicle, after 3 months. What would you make of this? Is this a factory fault?
