2023 McLaren Artura Review // The Worst Best Car Ever

2023 ж. 29 Там.
736 396 Рет қаралды

The Mclaren Artura ($289,175 as specced in the US, ~$393,397 CAD converted) is a hybrid V6 twin-turbo supercar that makes a massive 671 horsepower, 531 lb ft of torque, and has just a 3303 lb curb weight. It comes with a claimed 355 km/h top speed and a 3.0 second acceleration to 100 km/h. Like every Mclaren, it is hand assembled for extra precision - but do some extra quirks still come along for the ride? And does it hold its own against the competition? Thomas and James are excited to try their first ever Mclaren on Throttle House. We hope you enjoy the episode! Subscribe!

    • It's astounding some of the engineering decisions they make - technology aside even their engineering is often very questionable - one I recently became aware of is they put skeletal cast conrods in most of their V8's - ostensibly to save rotating mass - but the real outcome is a lot of McLaren models are very prone to bending rods. I mean, they could at LEAST use forged rods on all their cars, given how expensive they all are - and when you are asking a small V8 to produce big power at big revs, the last thing you should be doing is trying to use skinny cast conrods just so the engine revs a fraction more freely - hell even my low revving Lexus V8 has forged rods, and it was a fraction of the cost of even an "entry level" McLaren. The engine they use is derived from a Nissan unit developed for racing - Nissan NEVER put cast rods in it though.

  • I've said it before & I'll say it again, whats happened to McLaren is that for years people said the cars were phenomenal but lacked the "character" of their Italian rivals. McLaren then employed (I presume in labcoats) "character experts" to go and analyse cars that were reviewed as having lots of it so they could mimic some. Unfortunately they chose to take the character of old italian stuff that just didn't work 50% of the time. "ITS A FEATURE NOT A BUG"

Funnily enough, 2005 onwards Maseratti Quatroportes are very reliable and give you that Ferrari flat plane crank v8 experience, with more practicality to boot.

As an OEM they really need to make their cars more appealing to long term ownership. For instance, among the original P1 owners, there’s a number of them that have sold their cars because they don’t want the headache that comes with the milieu of service and maintenance issues. Reliability, durability, and build quality are all luxuries that you might not think about until you notice their absence. Not being inconvenienced or wasting time is a significant luxury.

  • A beautiful car, but the argument “But it’s got great dynamics” just doesn’t cut it. After all, that’s the fundamental premise of the car. Why should anyone accept faults from a $200,000 car that they’d be enraged over in a $30,000 daily driver? Worse, McLaren knows their cars are poorly built and seem to remain arrogantly unconcerned. The web is full of examples of horror stories regarding McLaren’s shoddy service and poor treatment of their customers. If I ever reach an understanding with the lottery commission, McLaren will not be on my shopping list…😎

  • 671 hp = 500 kW (rounded to the nearest whole number) No idea *why* that's being used as a figure though. Might mean something to the regulations of some market it gets exported to, carried into other markets the same way as with Japanese automakers agreeing to limit cars to 276 hp / 206kW. Something that still occurs even on non-Japanese automakers, long after the "agreement" has ended. Or, might just be a nice round number close _enough_ to the average output of the engines that it's just what they went with.

    @JemaKnight@JemaKnight8 ай бұрын
    • maybe to offset the "quirks" aka issues in the quality. ironically 671 is more precise than 500... 500 is what you say when you dont know what it makes but you have an idea based on the parts... so 500. other than 671 because thats what the dyno said or you actually know EXACTLY the PRECISE figures.

      @NXT_LVL@NXT_LVL8 ай бұрын
    • I guess engineers use kW because it's easier to do maths for acceleration, etc., and the early planning stages of what a car will be and where it will sit in the market are based around things like number of seats, number of doors... and where the power should be. The engine could do more but it sacrifices other factors, so the rough number becomes the exact number.

    @arierickson6137@arierickson61378 ай бұрын
    • 671 bhp is just an odd number in the imperial system. 671 bhp is about 680 metric horsepower (yes, there is a tiny difference) and about 500 kW, which is the unit most likely to be used by the engineers. So they went for a nice round number in 500 kW and then the marketing department has to convert it to the odd 671 bhp.
