1,000 Miles Across the Desert in OUR Toyota AE86 and GTI // Road to Enlightenment Ep.1

2023 ж. 29 Сәу.
2 172 144 Рет қаралды

Thomas and James have PURCHASED two ‘80s hatchbacks - the 1986 Toyota Corolla AE86 and the 1984 Volkswagen Rabbit GTI. James bought his Sprinter Trueno sight-unseen and promptly decked it out in full Initial D livery, as one does. Thomas spent only a few moments with his stock Mk1 GTI before shipping it off for adventure. A 1000 mile road trip across the desert lies before them. In their journey to reach enlightenment, the cars will likely be pushed to their limits. Let’s see what two classic ‘80s hot hatchbacks can do! We hope you enjoy the first ever episode of the Throttle House Adventure Series.

    • Look how much fukn land is wasted to feed cows through fk load of plants, because the majority of ppl are too fkn fat, stupid, and addicted to just eat plants. We no longer need to eat non human animals for survival. It's extremely wasteful, literally uses up over 80% of all farmland, and most of the world's PLANTS grown for food, are to feed those FKN animals. If the "meat" industry wasn't heavily subsidized youd all be paying $100 PER POUND of red meat or whatever. Seriously this chit needs to stop

I took my wife out in our first date in that car, drove to CA and Vegas in that car, etc. I wound up buying a brand new 2002 GTI, and parked this little guy for about 4 years. I wound up donating the car to charity. About a year later I saw a young family driving the car locally and was glad to see “Helmut” running and on the road.

    • I am a huge rabbit enthusiast and work for VW as an engineer today because of my lifelong love of the mk1 rabbit. I would LOVE to have some of your time and interview you sometime. I have tons of info on the people and the plant and view it as my role to be a historian and pass on the lessons learned for future VW. Chattanooga has benefited a lot here from the lessons learned there and made some of the same mistakes too. I’m dead serious, I’d love to interview you or be your pen pal or something.

    • That's fantastic!! I purchased my first Rabbit, a '79 Diesel L in 1988, in 2 parts. $150 for the car, and $150 for the engine that had been removed. Ultimately added a factory AC system, and a 5 speed, Mk1 Scirocco wheels painted white to match the car, and a Kamei air dam. Had a custom CA plate that read: GTI WNAB I put several hundred thousand miles on it and only sold it because I found an '81 Rabbit Diesel LX Pickup in a field for free, and fully restored it to original. By then I had moved through the ranks of the local German independent repair shops, and was the lead VW tech at the local dealer. I still have the pickup and it is still my pride and joy. The stories of the Westmoreland plant and the early days of VW in SoCal are near and dear to my heart!! Would have loved to have helped with the GTI in this video series, so that it could have been a much better representation of what truly amazing and inspiring cars the Mk1's (of all types 17's) were.

      @austinado16@austinado16 Жыл бұрын
    • I'll give Thomas a pass for saying Westmoreland, Pennsylvania. They were actually made in New Stanton, Pa., which is in Westmoreland County. VW made a huge investment there in the 80's but ultimately sold the plant to Sony who made TV's there through the 90's and early 00's.

  • I owned two different 84 GTIs, one red, one black. One had a moonroof, it leaked. They were absolutely amazing around town, back roads, and such. Due to the gearing they were hideous on the interstate. Tons of fun at the low-mid end, anemic on the highway, very much so. Enjoyed the video!

This is my 2nd/3rd time watching and it probably my favorite automotive content since Clarkson/Hammond/May era Top Gear Specials....it might even be my favorite of all time because it is even more relatable. Great footage of cars, nature, landmarks along with commentary including comedy, history/information, breakdowns/fixes, and a nice bit of suspense. All the things that made the Top Gear Specials as great as they are! MORE MORE MORE!

  • Drifting was started by the DK (drift king). Sprinter Trueno AE86 is famous for Keiichi Tsuchiya. He is a Japanese professional race car driver. He is known as the Drift King or DK. He is the one who started nontraditional use of drifting in non-drifting racing events and his role in popularizing drifting as a motorsport. Still he owns the same car. Since then AE86 is famous for its shape, easy to work nature and light weight. This car really inspired lots of car enthusiasts and Japanese anime creators and movie makers.
