FIRST LOOK: Porsche Taycan Turbo GT - Smashes Tesla’s Lap Record AGAIN!

The Porsche Taycan Turbo S is already absurdly fast - but now it’s been beaten. By Porsche. To battle the likes of the Tesla Model S Plaid and Lucid Air Sapphire, Stuttgart has cooked up the Taycan Turbo GT, capable of 0-62mph in as little as 2.2 seconds. Yep. Absurd.
It remains dependent on a dual-motor (rather than tri-motor) set-up, but can generate up to 1,108hp in its ‘Attack’ mode, and go all the way to 190mph. It’s lapped the Nürburgring in 7mins 7sec and has now destroyed Tesla’s record around California’s best racetrack: Laguna Seca.
Top Gear’s Ollie Kew was there to witness the record being set, give a tour of the new super-Taycan, and have a passenger ride in the record car with Porsche’s lap time hero, Lars Kern. It’s a hugely impressive machine (the Turbo GT, not Lars), but is it one the world actually needed?

    • The repaving was completed in June 2023, it's not only a resurfacing but there's more track and run off at Turn 5 and 9. I went the first weekend after the re-pave and posted a 1:42.66, as the track rubbered in during October I posted a 1:39.66. Randy Pobst in the same car before the re-pave did a 1:37.82, and I'd be nowhere near him for it not for the new track configuration. Make what you will of that, but Lars Kern was using all the additional run off in his lap.

    • ⁠@@pierrebarratt4705ah interesting, I presume you mean ‘23 but yeah sounds like a few seconds quicker potentially since they did that. Tesla might need to return or perhaps we’ll see what the rumored Model 3 Plaid can do once it arrives. Oh sorry misinterpreted your times. What do you think you would have gotten before the repave? Could be significantly more time between then as yeah before a track is rubbered in, it can be quite loose (especially at a track like MRLS which can be very high risk high reward).

    • @@Raptile07 yea obvs, since we dont have the production car's name, lets stick with "successor of the 918 based on the Mission X" and going by the 918's concept car, Mission X concept is nearly 60~70% of what would translate to the production model. (even though I still hope Porsche do one more ICE based hypercar before going full electric :P )

    • Hilarious you think $4mill hypercar techs going into a 200k car. Their battery& motors are far worse than teslas. The only reason they win on a track is due to porsche specifically targeting the car for that, its set up with loads of anti roll tech, for christ sake the plaids on bags 🤣 these cars are for two completely separate customers. The plaid is also half the price has more features like self drive, cooled seats etc. plaids also a hatchback so the body isnt stiffer, more over the model they used on this run was only a 2door because there are no rear seats, so in fact we’re comparing a 2dr track focussed porsche to a 5dr hatchback tesla on bags set up for dailying… realise how dumb it is yet?

    • They’re starting with a platform that’s a big boat of a car… wait till they apply this same performance EV treatment to a vehicle that was designed as a focused sports car from the ground up. Something that has 2 seats, is 1000lbs lighter, with TRUE downforce. That’ll be a real hyper car slayer.

    • @@Glock7eventeen But, they have NOT gotten any lighter in the past 12 years, for some reason? Model S is still there. Similar battery size, similar weight. Even if the Plaid battery is halved in weight (which take battery density to be 3x or 4x), that's only a 270 kg reduction. Even shaving 100kg from the Plaid battery will take some doing. Cybertruck and the new Roadster were to have 500 Wh/kg cells, but since they're still under 300 Wh/kg, the Cybertruck got 123 kWh with 200 kWh PROMISED for the Roadster. 500 Wh/kg for a same capacity replacement pack for Plaid would save...100-150kg, maybe? Wild guess, Plaid is 372kg cells, 170kg everything else. 500 Wh/kg would be 201 kg in cells, but the cooling might need to be more robust for the 4680 format chosen, whatever Tesla told us to prop up share price.

  • Insane and for people who says the plaid is as fast and cheaper, well this Taycan is even faster on this track than the pikes peak version of the model S plaid which is completely modified with an race car aero kit, with slick tires, not street legal and must cost wayy more to build Porsche is definitely next level

    • @@royshavrick the 1.9 run is on drag prep with a rollout... so its really 2.2-2.3 which you can't really go any faster without better tires (non-street legal) obviously this porsche dogs it on the track... like another guy said even beats the plaid with racing slicks which is a huuuugeeeee upgrade usually 3+ seconds a lap. Will be curious to see the quarter mile times on this thing.

    • ​@@ThiagoMarquardtonly if it stays by itself, meaning, they leave the combustion F6 alone, have their typical models, and then have a separate 911, potentially even a completely new model that looks like the 922.2.....please for the love of God, do not make the range of 911's hybrid, same thing with the absolutely stellar 718's....these are scary times with governments stepping on the necks of manufacturers and the populous to buy electric, especially for such iconic brands such as Porsche, if they go to far trying to appease the government instead of saying "no", they could ruin their entire existence.

Basically whichever 4 wheel drive model (c4s, targa 4gts, and turbo models) would seemlessly benefit from this hybrid technology. They’ll leave base models and gt products alone is my hope

    • @@SUHKET agreed, but personally, I don't even want them to touch even the 4S or the GTS4 or anything, literally just make a new trim.... the Cayman and Boxster are even more scary on what they're planning, it's such a great platform, and if they do what people have been saying they're planning, to go full electric or full hybrid with the entire lineup, man, they're going to trash that entire platform. I'm clearly not an EV guy, but I can admit that the Taycan, specifically the Sport Turismo and Cross Turismo wagon models are really phenomenal, literally the only EV's I've ever even considered being cool... and people freaked when they made them, but they were smart and kept them to themselves, and threw some hybrid tech into the Pan's and Cayenne's.... I really can't see this ending well if they take their true drivers and "performance" lineup and do similar to them, unless they make a complete separate trim of each and keep it like that. People need to put their foot down.... we all seen what dumbass Mercedes did with the infamous 63's.... completely ruined their entire standing.... I'd love to see their sales numbers on before and after when they swapped from their 4.0TT V8 to a 2L turbo 4cyl 😅🙄

  • 9:10 gosh top gear how do you mess up so badly with the hans and harness that’s super dangerous, if they went off he could’ve died from a seemingly small crash. Harness without a properly secured hans is way more dangerous than a regular 3pt seatbelt + airbags. Also his helmet is... I don’t even know but it doesn’t look right. Top gear you need to step up.

  • It's only 2 seconds slower than the Rimac Nevera on the Nordschleife... with 900HP less. Shows how much Porsches racing knowledge can do. I'm almost afraid of what the Porsche Mission E will able to do. 1500 BHP @ 1500kg (Rimac Nevera almost 2000kg) and even crazier Porsche racing technology than the Taycan Turbo GT. I can't wait to see that monster on the Nordschleife when they will be able to build it with a proper range in a few years.

Compared to Plaid, this one accelerates just as fast, has similar range, charges way quicker, has way better build quality, better interior, better NVH, better lights, far better suspension and brakes, better ergonomics by any metric, looks better, has an actual service... it's just the complete package. The Model S Plaid isn't.

    • At this point, there aren't a ton of EVs that make me get excited in every way. The Taycan, especially the new one in general and more so in Turbo GT trim, is one of those EVs. I'd be more than happy in a Turbo S, but there are some that feel like they need or want that extra power.

  • Terminal understeer might be the understatement of the century. Turn in, the front tires aren't enough, then the computers artificially apply overpower to outside rear wheel to trim the line. To be clear, I think for what it is, the Taycan Turbo GT is fantastic, and if I was in the market, this would be it. But the "fun" at the track seems to stem solely from the novelty of the speed, and not that its 'pure' fun.

Of course, if that were the only thing that mattered, everyone would drive a Model S, but they don't. A Charger also costs less than an M5 and still has more horsepower, but most people want a BMW and not a Dodge. One is a car from a luxury brand, the other is a big Mazda with an engine from a vacuum cleaner. Last year 40,069 Taycan and 68,874 Model S and X combined were sold. Despite the higher price, people still prefer to buy a Porsche.

    • Pricing is still important to keep in mind, it doesn't make sense to pretend it's not a factor whatsoever. Someone with a $100k budget will be able to consider a Plaid, but not a Turbo GT.

    • Tesla makes some amazing powertrains. It does not make race cars, but some people have turned them into race cars, and they are fast. It will be interesting what they do with the Roadster 2, if they ever ship it. That will be priced more like a Porche.

    • You realise the plaid is built for the american market right? Not many corners, lots of straight Wide open roads coupled with blistering performance, tons of space (hatchback) and extras like cooled seats etc. the tesla is less than half the price , its on air suspension, uses zero carbon fibre & not much anti roll tech for a more comfortable ride for day to day driving. The cars are for two completely separate customers.

  • With EVs there are few limits on the amount of HP and torque you can achieve. At this point the limiting factor for performance cars is traction and handling. And the days of fast = loud are over for good. Noise only means slower now.
