New Toyota MR2! FT-Se Concept: Japan’s Porsche Cayman Rival

2024 ж. 15 Мам.

This is the Toyota FT-Se: nothing to do with share indexes, everything to do with driving fun. It’s an electric sports car of course, imagining a near future of what a GR-branded, two-seater lightweight could look like, and what it could offer using next-gen technology. Like Toyota’s clever ‘prismatic’ batteries that offer a greater range and quicker charging over what’s currently available.
The idea with the FT-Se is for the all-wheel-drive setup to have a rear-bias, not just for better traction, but also for better cornering, more driver confidence and of course, to allow some sideways lunacy. Sounds good to us.
Toyota has indicated the Nürburgring will be one of the key battlegrounds for the FT-Se, and although they’ve not released official figures, we can expect a 0-62mph time of around three seconds and an estimated top speed of 155mph.
Top Gear Magazine’s Tom Ford gives us all the details of what could be Toyota’s new MR2.

    • @@BlackjackK7X Nothing wrong with the GR86 engine, at all. Only people that don't know what they'r talking about say that. in fact, the FA24 is a great platform to mod, especially for a 4 cylinder. It can hold more power reliably than the FK8 Civic Type R's motor before needing to be built with forged internals.. same with the transmission. The only problem is the "RTV" which is an easy fix, just get an oil pressure gauge. The right hand oil pressure loss issue isn't a problem on the street and it's currently being fixed with aftermarket parts.. some of which already show no oil pressure loss on hard right turns on a track.. so yes, please have the GR86 motor, just fix the 2 issues with it from the factory before it's shipped out, and it will be perfect.

  • I don't understand why people keep mentioning the MR2 moniker in connection with this obviously upmarket car - yes it has a mid engine connection but the MR2 was/is a cheap(ish) runabout (clue in the name) that was a natural competitor to the MX5. This car (price-wise) is going to be way, way above the natural pricepoint of the traditional market of the MR2. More GR2 than MR2.

    @tsmith7146@tsmith71462 ай бұрын
    • I guess the base version for most MR2 generations competed with the MX5 but they also had superchargers/turbos that placed it at a price point far higher

    • I think the new price point of this MR2 is going to be in the range between a Porsche 718 boxster and a BMW Z4, and those cars are priced twice of a Mazda Miata, so the concept of an affordable roadster is just gone in the new MR2

      @pihermoso11@pihermoso112 ай бұрын
    • @@pihermoso11I know this won't be affordable - i've just said that! The point i'm making is that i don't understand why people are referring to this car as an MR2. Toyota hasn't mentioned "MR2" in connection with this concept.I don't think they will name it MR2 if it ever becomes a production model - I think they will give it another name that more befits what appears to be a more exclusive and upmarket image than the traditional image of all versions of the MR2.

      @tsmith7146@tsmith71462 ай бұрын
    • @@peejayem4700 i'm fully aware of the history of the MR2, having owned all 3 versions in the past. My point is - Toyota haven't at any time mentioned the moniker "MR2" and i don't think they will resurrect the name for this car if it ever reaches production. Nobody knows how expensive this car will be but (based on pure speculation) it looks like even a base model isn't going to be affordable - could it be 718 level or above or maybe a GR version could get closer to base Emira territory? (who knows - all guesswork) - but i feel the moniker "MR2" isn't associated with the level of any of these cars or their competition and Toyota will give it another name to befit its status.

      @tsmith7146@tsmith71462 ай бұрын
    • @@tsmith7146 I think the reason the word 'MR2' is mentioned is mainly because this is most likely a mid engine sports car, and they are probably making a successor to the MR2, if this was front engined then GT86 should be mentioned and not MR2, but if pricing wise this goes into 718/Z4 territory then Miata is remains king of affordable roadsters with no competition, unless Honda revives the S2000 to compete with the Miata

So, I guess after 2035 there will be no more “car people”? Or will they have to accept that companies like Lotus are already going EV only with all their next products. And companies like Fisker exist.* So no, I don’t accept your statement. And at a global level your statement is also not accepted. You have an artificial wall that tells you that EVs aren’t for “car people”. That’s on you and it’s silly. *(The only way to have well developed platforms by 2035 is to do them before 2035. So if your suggestion is to wait until then, it doesn’t work that way. Every one of the companies has to be building that way now in order to have smooth transition. This is Toyota’s future of products, and they are wise to develop their platform. If you don’t want to buy an EV in 2030, that’s up to you. But if your whole identity as a “car guy” is wrapped up on never driving an EV, I guess prepare to be unhappy). Also FWIW, I am a “car guy”. It’s a silly argument to say anyone following Top Gear isn’t. I’ve been watching TG, since the first year of Clarkson…. Sooooo ad hominem either way isn’t an argument.

Toyota announced they won’t go with all electric cars for the foreseeable future because the infrastructure cannot support them. Also the lack of sufficient charging in stations is another reason. So now announcing the new all electric mr2 is confusing to the automotive world! • @@uludak8468 model Y is not a car is an ugly and overpriced refrigerator called EV. What i meant is Toyota knows EV idea is dirty technology and it’s a scam to help control society by governments. They are smart because trying to avoid the mistake as long as they can and pushing hydrogen meantime where is the future.

  • Me on the phone: Lexus with GR badge, Nismo GT-R lights, but 55% smaller, old BMW i8 back, oh and they say it's an EV aaand you cannot buy it. For whatever reason they call it MR-2, but inside is like a modern take on Aston Martin Lagonda with McLaren vibe. Honestly. I hope that doesn't get people at Toyota mad 😂🫣. We all love MR-2 :)

Please don't let the car community down with this Toyota... (Like Acura did the Integra 😒🤦🏿‍♂️). Can't wait to see what they actually put into production.

  • I think the whole MR2 Concept and the Powertrain concept behind it is a strategic visualization in which direction toyota want to go in the future not only with a possible MR2 I think they will show as the new generation of the supra, as a 100% Supra with a complete new hybrid Engine!!! Im sure that they really will bring this MR2 into the market very soon!!

  • Drove a lot of miles in the first MR2. It was wedged and angular just like the FTSE concept. BUT, in the 80’s Japan was bold and fearless. The MR2 was Toyotas quick response to the Pontiac Fiero. The FTSE is a better idea than the current Supra.

  • This is honestly the only electric car that really catches my interest. I am far from a fan of electric cars, but if they actually made something like this that is everyday attainable (meaning doesn't come with a six figure sticker), you might see me go for a purchase. The performance specs sound like a daily sports car equivalent so that's interesting.

  • Even though you don't NEED gears in an EV, the potential benefits are still there as for any propulsion system. If you have gears, you can potentially get more performance and efficiency and perhaps even use a smaller output motor. With an overdrive gear you could have a smaller battery for efficiency, performance and handling benefits, especially with the strong torque output of E motors. I dont see why a sports ev couldn't have 3 or more forward gears to improve flexible controlled power delivery. The main issue people have with the Taycan auto 2 speed is predicting throttle response but if you have a stick or paddles, you can choose your gear and maintain full control and of course more driver involvement.
