  • I work in medical imaging and I remember learning about this case in school. Po-210 emits alpha radiation (essentially a helium atom), which really doesn't need the kind of shielding you'd think it does. In fact, Po-210 in particular can't penetrate skin from the outside. It wouldn't have set off any detectors because a plastic vial would be enough to shield it. Once ingested, the body itself serves as adequate shielding (which is probably why the doctors didn't catch it until right before he died) while causing massive internal damage to soft tissues and wiping out white blood cells. It's not a pleasant way to go.

    @jedimaster91@jedimaster912 жыл бұрын
    • Alpha radiation also can't travel further than a few centremetres, meaning that only a specific small area would be intensely radiated. It's actually in smoke detectors lol.

I was 7 at the time, and my dad picked me up from school, but we came across multiple TV vans, police, people in hazmat suits and even a helicopter on our way home. We switched on the TV and saw my dad’s car on the screen and we soon figured out it was a spy poisoning. The house was blocked off by a tent and then something else for the next 4 years, with a note from the court beside the door ordering prohibition on trespassing the radioactive house. Since then it was only occupied for a year or two, but ended up empty most of the time. Spooky.

  • Need to clear up some stuff on radiation poisoning around 09:12-- Polonium 210 is a radioisotope that undergoes alpha decay. Alpha particles themselves are relatively harmless because they're physically massive and don't travel well through dense material; they slow down (use up their energy) before they can really go anywhere. In that way, you can hold Polonium 210 in your hand because your skin is thick enough to stop alpha particles (and a handshake would be no issue for the same reason). Alpha radiation becomes problematic when ingested because--similarly to how it can't pass skin from the outside--it can't leave the inside of the body once consumed. It's a high energy particle, so all that energy is now on the inside, ripping electrons from its environment (in this case, the cells of the body).

    @HashtagCarlyBlaugher@HashtagCarlyBlaugher5 жыл бұрын
    • The particle has a charge, in the case of alpha radiation, it's positive (specifically the nucleus of a helium atom). Positive attracts negative, and because alpha particles are of unbalanced positive charge, they rapidly combine (by pulling from other atoms) with negative charges to create helium. The atoms the alpha particle pulls electrons from lose two electrons to balance the charge; for organic systems this causes significant damage.

  • For Postmortem (or just anyone that might read this comment): there's different kinds of radiation, Polonium is specifically an alpha radioactive particle and has limited penetrative capabilities, it can only go as far as a piece of paper. However, when ingested, its metabolism by the body leads to the irradiation of all cells in it's path and that is what leads to illness. Therefore, it is not at all surprising that all those 700+ people exposed to polonium did not fall ill as they did not ingest it, they were protected by their clothes basically stopping the radioactive particles from entering their bodies Fun Fact: 1g of Polonium is enough to kill 50 million people and injure 50 million more but only when ingested

    • An interesting question (I'm not a health physicist, so take my words with a grain of salt). I'd say unless it's a very very deep cut, you still have many (relatively) thick layers of skin in the way that would prohibit the radiation from an alpha particle to penetrate the body.

  • I learnt about this case in physics! We were learning about the three types of radiation. Polonium 210 emits alpha radiation that can't pass through paper and definitely not skin however once it gets inside of the body it's ridiculously dangerous becuase it can't get out and alpha radiation is the most ionising so it slowly destroyed his insides over time with no way to remove it.

  • 3:46 interesting thing - Politkovskaya was poisoned with tea on the airplane, investigation of this event wasn’t successful and she speculated about the “poisoning department” of fsb. she was right all along, judging by navalny’s investigation of his own poisoning also lugovoy is a deputy of our state duma since 2007

    • Great questions... It is likely that this was no ordinary chef and I'm pretty sure the FSB would have been able to contact a local (russian) chef and kindly ask him to help out with an order, possibly an order by the President. Most likely this person was someone who was smart enough to not involve himself in this matter and who knew not to speak about his orders given by the russians because if he did...well, he would have gotten burned.
