Civic Type R fans, this one’s for you!
We’ve got our hands on every generation of Civic Type R, and they’re about to face off over the quarter mile to see just how much the Type R has evolved since 2001!
Now of course, it should come as no surprise that the older editions come at a disadvantage when it comes to power output. If you take a look at the original EP3, it comes with a 2-litre naturally-aspirated engine (with VTEC!) that can produce 200hp and 196Nm of torque. In comparison, the all-new FL5 comes with a 2-litre turbo petrol engine that can produce 320hp and 420Nm!
But of course, don’t forget that they’re all on a level playing field in that they’re all FWD, and they’re all manuals! The question is, will the new FL5 prove to be worth its eye-watering £47,000 price tag?

I love my FK2, and this video makes me not regret my choice for getting it and not waiting for the newer ones - I way prefer the style and look of the FK2, so to see it perform fairly evenly with the two newer models, makes me happy

I own a 2003 EP3 Type R. In terms of pace, it just doesn’t compete anymore, but for a little b road source of enjoyment on a sunny day it’s never lost it’s fun factor.
People have told me that you get used to the power if you have a ''fast'' car. So having a car that's fun in the corners will probably stay fun as long as you enjoy driving quick.
and when you put in a cold air intake it sounds awesome also , i own a FN2 with it in and everytime V-tec kicks in i have an eargasm ... :-)

EP3 dont need pace at all, that little car its a piece of art. From a VAG fan, that car, and his k20, was the reason that i got so attached to petrol cars.

Have you measured the 0-100 and 100-200kmh time? Planing to take mine just to stage 1 ecu they said it will get the same 370hp and 510nm. Do you think it’s worth the upgrade?

I learned manual just to get the FK8. I'm saving up now for it. Such an amazing looking car with great specs. Sad that America didn't get the other years, especially the FK2.

Join the club.. Had mine for 9 yrs from new until it was written off with 133,000 on the clock.. not by me.. it was rear ended in stop traffic.. Went over to the FN2 championship white.. nothing like the EP3 at all.. It's heavier, less raw in vetec, electronic throttle.. hated it.. Had it for 3 years now have a Astra J vxr.. All these years later still comparing the Astra to EP3.. Nothing like raw high revs with the burst of vetec.. coming on song..

I love how the oldest car here still holds up even today. Out of all the Civic Type R's it's the one I would go for. It's dirt cheap these days, has fully independant suspension all round (unlike it's sucessor) and it's a great undercover pocket rocket because it looks so tame in comparison with all the other models.

they used to race the full mile more often in older videos, but sometimes on faster cars they were running out of space to brake because they were reaching seriously high speeds.

Insane jump from the FN2 to the FK2 in terms of power. Like massive from 201 HP to 310 HP, like wow. Guess that's what turbocharged engines give you.
Yeah and only like 2 second difference...compared to a 20 year old NA.
Be good to see a modded fn2 or ep3 compete here quite easy to extract 230-240 horse out of them n/a with breathing mods and a cam and that doesn’t sound like much but it’s a huge difference on these cars being so light

@@K20XRL yeah thats true, I think my next Mods are gonna be an RRC intake Manifold and a 74mm throttle body. The standard RAC manifold is supposedly quite restrictive for it. (May have got the manifolds the wrong way round, I often do)

Honestly I'm a big fan of the FN2 (spaceship one). i love the styling and the fact that it's the last 3-door civic type r and naturally aspirated. That plus that it's not that heavy makes it my pick despite the outright speed disadvantage.
I used to own an FN2 before I bought my FK8 and while I love my FK8 I also have a soft spot for the older FN2, something really special about it, has so much character and handles superbly. Type R's where never about 0-60 times anyways
Hab einen FN2 in schwarz . Hab mich damals grade wegen der Optik gegen den EP3 entschieden . Der optische Unterschied innen und außen ist krass , beim EP3 sieht man das er alt ist , beim FN2 nicht .
that's why I bought a 2010 FN2 Type R, I loved the EG so FN2 was an upgrade for me. And I want to enjoy the NA character as long as possible. 😢
Very true and the interior in the FN2 looks was years ahead of any car of its time and still looks funky now. I have a GT one with the cruise control and all the extra climate control etc and it even has speech control in it. And let's not forget the seats If it wasn't for the FN2 as the grandad, it's grandchildren wouldn't have these features. Plus what they didn't clearly show was the sound of the VTech in the older cars beats any other newer ones. I've driven them all and they're yawnville compared with the sound. Just a slight mod on the FN2 you get so much more power for the money. The later ones. Yes, they have the turbo power and are very quick but you can't use it anywhere on our British roads anyway. 200 horsepower is plenty to have fun, especially on the back roads.

Contrary to Mat's opinion, I think the Fn2 has aged the best! Sharp looking thing for an ~18 year old design, without any of the fussiness of it's successors. The EP3 is iconic and brilliant, but it looks like a van.
Civic FN2 is the ugliest IMHO, as for me the most beautiful of the classics are EK9 and FD2

Not a soft limiter on the NA civics. It's the non VTEC cam lobe. VTEC requires wheel speed and oil pressures etc etc to engage. The small lobe isn't designed for revs so the ignition system is cutting out of the power for that lobe.
I think it's deliberate as a soft limiter as the EK series does not have it. They can rev to their rev limits in neutral.

Honestly not surprised the FK2 was one of the fastest. Also expected around the same performance from the FK8 to the FL5. It seems the extra HP makes up for the extra weight on the FL5 putting it close with the FK8

Yeah, I reckon FN2 actually age well on considering it still have aggressive looks not not overly stylise than most modern cars. Interior may be look plain by modern standards, but that curved big 3D style dash on the bottom still unique and if it's a full LCD, it could look modern. FK8 may be the one look dated in the future since Honda is now going for more subdued and mature looks. Though FK8 will be unique over stylise car in the future for sure.

its wierd that the fk2 and fn2 are the same except one denotes the 5door and 2 door but theres also an fn2 and fk2 for both years, ive got the fk2 sport 2006 but ive got to say the accelleration to me atleast on video didnt seem as responsive as in real life. could just be the comparison but seemed much more sluggish than normal.
Also put in Engine in the comparison screen. 2.0L I4 T for example.

The FN2 seems like it was designed and developed by Honda over a lunch break and then just put to sale, unlike the other civic type-rs. which were built for maximum performance and precision.

The EP3 was not the first Civic Type R. The EK9 was. It may be JDM only, but it was still the first and it would have been good to have one in this video.

I have a FK1, and I think the FN2 is the worst dynamically, but might be the more spacious one. The boot is huge. I think it could be the more "dad has responsibilities but also wants some fun every now and then" car 🤣🤣

I think it's like 150cm long and people in the car park were watching her loading it into her Civic... ; she also doesn't like the over-the-top winged look of the newer models

I had an EP3 and with about £1000 of engine modifications was able to get a 13.6s 1/4 mile on an unprepped surface, beating all of these 😂. Was a damn sight more exciting too.
Damn right! Fit a supercharger kit to the k20 and have over 400bhp and it's all over for the rest. The only problem is getting the power down from a launch, but a rolling start will destroy the newer models over and over.
The older it gets the more I love and want an ep3. Raw, basic, simple no nonsense car to make you happy.
They are pretty great and fun, light and tossable - I love where the shifter is located on the dash. Had one for about 5 years!
Get one now as they're just starting to appreciate in value. Never getting rid of mine.

The FN2 was amazing on space - I had three in the back two were 6 ft and the other 6 ft 6 ins and as driver I'm 6 ft and passenger 5ft 10ins - a real space wagon. Always regretted selling it until I got my Tesla Model 3 - leaves them all for dead.

Love my EP3 had mine since June 2020, 137k for £3500 1 owner from new. Loved it, spent a lot of money and could spend double again and not be satisfied. Sitting at 153k and still sings away to 8600rpm. Such easy cars to work on I've self taught myself a lot of mechanical and service work all because of Honda's especially the older generations, would have been good if you could have got an EK9 in the mix too!

i have a FN2 , love this car because it looks pretty modern for a 2006 car , honestly inside , in the EP3 you can clearly see how old he is . I own my car for 8,5 years and still have fun to drive it . I put in a cold air intake and every time the V-tec kicks in it sounds amazing . N/A for ever . And it doesnt matter to me that its the slowest here , i am not a racer and for to have fun on normal roads its more than enough , and more than enough to loose your driving license ...🙂when i want to go really fast i put out my CBR ...
The FN2 driver probably left traction control on, which will slow it off the line, otherwise they normally do 1/4 mile in 15 sec when stock (16.3 was bloody awful here).
@@CarefreeCFC83 to be fair though - none of these cars hit their ideal 1/4 mile time. I've seen all of them do it faster, perhaps just the conditions on the day? It does make sense that the FN2 would be slower given the weight, lower torque figure - and doesn't it also have a lower redline, and a peak power figure higher up in the RPMs as well? Meaning it's got a smaller power band overall. Could be wrong on the last bit there. I'm by no means saying it's a worse car btw, just not as quick as the gen before.

I literally had that exact spec FK2 Type R. It was such a beast! God, I miss it Haha
still loved my two ep3s with a cheap and loud exhaust while hitting the rev limiter :) especially loved the independent wheel suspension and my Swiss version had a differential as standard. a perfect fun machine for our Alps here. You could go almost all the time in 2nd gear, with the little vtec screaming. So reliable and so cheap to maintain. ek9 and fd2 are not in the video..sadly.
Nice, I got an ep3 si two months ago. Any advice? I want to put a type r engine (same as type s in USA???) or a k24. It was my first choice as a dream car but got a Prius instead…..I love this car with all my heart!!!

An updated one with the FL5! Awesome, I've been waiting for this. However, I'm still a little ticked off by the fact that the EK9 wasn't included. Yes it's definitely way slower than the others, but it still would've been a nice touch. Other than that, this video is perfect. I love it!

Super happy to finally have my own ep3 as well! Remember watching the old civic drag race video & hearing it get praised for how it takes turns, couldnt wait until I was finally old enough to get my hands on one... Cant say much about the other ctr's but I love my ep3 and I love how they all look!
PERSONALLY.. pricewise and performance wise i would just boost a fn2. So fairly modern with comfort and about 400bhp. Quick and comfy and not too dated

Ep3 may look like a "bread van" but it had the most iconic engine of all time in the k20. Whether its racing tuning road car the k20 can do it all with the reliability to boot!

The front of the FK2 is the best looking of any hatchback ever. The led lights are on supercar/hyper level. Especially when you see one of these in your rear view mirror at night. I don't know how they've gone so backwards.
Exactly! Looked very mature and could have evolved. Over here in the states people complained about the bland design. We didnt have the cool LED, but the FK2 people didnt like the the shape. The FK2 was the sweet spot. The FK8 was not what we wanted, the FL5 kinda reminds me of the FK2 but nothing beats the old Civic headlights.

FN2 aged very well, and i think it will be considered as one of the greatest designs honda ever made. Doesn't have that cheap plastic tunning look, the newer models have. Too bad it's a bit heavy and slow, but it's NA, the others have turbo. There is a faster MUGEN version. FK2 looks better today, than it looked when it came out, i agree

@@whyalwaysme1106 would be funny to see a FN2 supercharged 300+ bhp versus those new turbo civic R would be really more interesting than a race 200 NA bhp vs 310 turbo bhp , specially in drag race
My FN2 has 208 HP and 198 Nm on a dyno and I still love it since 2007. Maybe they should try a mugen FN2 or a championship white one with a dif. 😉
that last race was like watching cars drive down the highway; it was like there wasn't even a race going on.

Fn2 was the only NA Type R officially sold in SA, so it kinda makes sense...back when it was released, it was hated on for many reasons. I've owned my fn2 for 10 years, and it's completely stock, and i still enjoy it every day. There are quite a few fn2s on the road in various modified states these days. Still an awesome car for what it is 👌
@SudleyJ I agree, and it got a bad reputation after Top Gear slated it. But part of that was that they gave the car to Fifth Gear first. More refined than an EP3 but still raw and fun
That German guy can't drive. He didn't know how to use VTEC And don't worry, the FN2 has a massive following in the UK as well. We appreciate that it has the better looks and interior than EP3 although slightly slower but can be modified so easily
The Ep3 is my favourite i have had the pleasure to have owned 2 of them one was a premier edition with the red bucket seats.
I kinda dig the old school one with the shifter on the dash.
Can we all agree that the day we lost full VTEC to a turbo was a sad day? This is what Honda Australia said about turbos back in the good old days: "No bolting on of a turbocharger to give silly power figures. All Type R engines are normally-aspirated, which deliver smoother power delivery throughout the rev range, allowing power to be transferred through the chassis more easily, improving traction and acceleration"
