  • Honestly there is nothing quite like your channel. Your vivarium is filled with all kinds of creatures and it seems like it is booming with activity all the time. I love the diversity within this system and especially enjoy the time lapse videos where you show all the scavenging organisms eating some food you left for them. Sure, there are channels which focus on ants out there, but you focus on the whole system and I love that. Keep up the good work dude!

    • why don't you add multiple types of algae, competition should keep balance in the pool of the terrarium. p.s. can you just mix all the terrariums, you have, together

  • Add some seed shrimps, triops, cyclops and dapnia eggs to your pond that should help with the algae once they hatch. You could also add some caradina shrimps as well, or amano shrimps. But you'd have to make sure the pond is always full of water. Possibly add a water circulation pump with filter.

  • If the snails aren't enough then you may want to consider very small shrimps. Many eat algae to my knowledge, though I don't know anything about freshwater shrimps in Thailand. But you have to be careful when handling aquatic animals in such an environment. The pond is pretty much a puddle. There isn't a lot of space which greatly limits what you can include and ammonia could easily build up and poison anything living there. Actually now that I think about it, tadpoles are another option. They're adapted to living in tiny pool of water, so they fit right in. And some species do eat algae. Though you do have to be careful on what species you pick up, other tadpoles are predatory.

  • Since your last video I have made a vivarium using yours for inspiration. It turned out quite different because I wanted deeper water so I went for about 8" deep water by placing large rocks all over the bottom to about 10" depth except for a small open space for the pool. Over the rocks I placed felt and then piled the dirt on top of that so it wouldn't just fall into the rocks and water. The footprint of my tank is the same as yours I think, 6'x2', but I think yours is taller than mine because by the time I had the false bottom and then some dirt in there the 'ground level' is about halfway up the tank, there is about a foot of space between the soil and the lights, but it still looks good...just not how I planned it. (my tank is 24" tall, I'm guessing yours is at least 30") I added a colony of carpenter ants from another small 30 gallon vivarium I had and immediately after I put the log they were living in inside the new vivarium they moved to a bigger log, but I haven't seen them since. It has been about a month since I last saw even a forager. Some people have suggested they might not like the humidity in the vivarium and so are not coming out, if they haven't already found some way to escape. Other people have suggested that I maybe overfed them and they just don't need any foraging right now. I noticed you have some bug corpses in your water area, if you can get water striders/water skippers then they will eat those bugs for you.

    • Sorry, I didn't see your reply for some reason. I think the Carpenter ant species is Camponotus Pennsylvanicus. I just made a recording today, but it is very bad quality. Still, it is good enough to get an idea of the setup. kzhead.info/sun/atl_fbl9f2qJl3k/bejne.html

  • try visiting some local creeks and swamps and observe what algae controlling organisms live there! I'm sure you can incorporate some local shrimp, daphnia, and skud species that'll aid in the control of algae. more aquatic plants could help by blocking out more light and absorbing more waste thus out competing the algae. all if wich im sure can easily be sourced from local bodies of water.

  • Argentine ants decimated my native colonies on my property. Even the tiny acorn ants that used to nest in pinecones that were bored out by the weevils. I would pick up fallen pinecones that had holes in them to throw out to help stop the spread of the weevils, until I started finding some occupied by the absolute most tiniest ants I have ever found. They were so small I thought they were red mites at very first glance. Till they started frantically moving out eggs and brood then I looked closer.lol no exaggeration, they were the size of 2 period Mark's. [ .. ] exactly. The best identification I found for them on google is the name acorn ants. But here on KZhead, any videos of acorn ants show ants twice the size. Anyway. Going way off topic. But now that Argentine ants moved in, and were spotted raiding the pine trees in my front yard, I haven't seen a single one of the teeny tiny ants. I was hoping to catch a queen this year too. Ugh.

  • i recently caught 2 queen ants im not the best at identifying species i caught either a big headed ant (Pheidole) or fire ant queen(Solenopsis) and a pavement ant (Tetramorium) or little black ants (monomorium minimum). the fire ant or big headed ant seems too large to be a fire ant queen and im not sure about the pavement ant or little black ants.

    • Yea, I could have been a bit harsh to Ants Canada, but here's the thing. In the last 2 years, he has made his videos super dramatic. I just feel as if his channel has lost it's magic it used to have. I understand there has to be some excitement in an ant video, but he has gone completely overboard in my opinion. Really, small ant youtubers will almost always be better than larger ones. If anyone has a counterclaim, I will accept your opinion no problem. Bye for now.
