Jonathan Ferguson, a weapons expert and Keeper of Firearms & Artillery at the Royal Armouries, once again breaks down the weaponry of Far Cry 2, including the iconic Desert Eagle, the Star Model BM pistol, and a particularly cursed AR-15 rifle.
In the latest video in the Firearm Expert Reacts series, Jonathan Ferguson--a weapons expert and Keeper of Firearms & Artillery at the Royal Armouries--breaks down the guns of Far Cry 2 and compares them to their real-life counterparts.

  • Jonathan: As the creative director on the game, this is a delightful trip down memory lane for me. Thank you so much for bringing your insight and analysis to bear on our efforts. We had a lot to learn about the subtleties of how many (sometimes obscure) weapons work - and not just the cyclic actions of firing and reloading-on-empty, but also dealing with misfires and unique ammunition behaviour in some cases. Yes, we cheated a lot. Many times we didn’t know we were cheating (thanks for keeping us honest) - often we did (thanks for noticing). One minor note about the RPG-7: you say that it does not appear to ‘shoot like a bullet and then ignite and launch like a rocket at 15m’ - but in fact it does. The smoke contrail (which should not be there at all, I imagine) should switch from grayish to black at 15m. Before this time (except in the misfire you analyze) the rocket is not live and can be bounce off of acute surface, walls, etc. It will even deflect off of vehicles if you try to shoot them from too close - often interpreted as a bug. So our implementation on that might not be perfect (oops on the recoil for the recoilless rifle) but we do simulate the warhead not being live until 15m. Thanks again for the insights. I’m not a gun guy, but we had to learn a lot on FC2, and seeing people care about the game and focus attention on those details even 10+ years later means a lot.

You're sitting there in cover getting shot at, and then you hear that distinct jam noise that you're now more familiar with hearing and pop out of cover to drop the poor sod.... only to have your gun jam! People don't seem to realize how recent the modern level of realism is. Before everyone had a smart phone, you could get away with basing your guns on urban legends and movie tropes because that's all most people knew. Sometimes including correct details- like the ability to unload a Garand- would lead to people saying your game was less realistic, because the urban legend was that you can't do that.

  • The gun degradation mechanic makes me smile. It’s easy to avoid, by visiting your many storerooms and grabbing a new one. Unless it’s something you haven’t unlocked. Besides that, I also love how the world is constantly dangerous, and enemies return to outposts, bases and patrol routes after you clear them. The malaria mechanic adds sporadic visual strangeness, which can occur anytime, like when you are fighting. And the AI is top notch. They know how to flank and use cover really well. The foliage is so thick that it’s really hard to see and stop them flanking you, even if you know they’re trying. Really solid Gun fights that actually felt dangerous and difficult. Sometimes setting the areas around on fire with a flare gun or Molotov was necessary to either push them, or prevent an area from being used against you. And stealth was extremely difficult compared to other games. Most of the time the enemies are alerted their fellow dying. If they see a body, they alert. You couldn’t just ninja through while guys are close, they’ll hear you. Overall it’s excellent. They world looks exactly like the area of Africa you’re in. Gorgeous. They try to make the story really similar to a gritty novel, and is inspired by Heart of Darkness. It’s one of a few games I’ll replay occasionally. It’s that good.

    • I agree with everything you said but I have slight issues with two of them: (1) "I love how . . . enemies return to outposts, bases and patrol routes". Yeah... except that they return too damn fast! Run until the checkpoint is out of line-of-sight, turn around, and they're back, in just a few seconds! I know that the day-night cycle is accelerated by a factor of four (1 real minute = 4 in-game minutes), but even in a tiny country like the one in Far Cry 2, it should take more than 4 in-game minutes for reinforcements to arrive. If they wanted to make the game more "realistic", they could have programmed in a delay depending on how far away the outpost was from the nearest city. (The closer to a city, the faster the reinforcements would arrive.) Instead, they obviously settled for "as soon as you travel far enough for the game engine to stream in the next chunk of the map". (2) "The world looks exactly like the area of Africa you're in". Except that no area of Africa has jungle, savannah, _and_ desert all within a 50 (length) x 25 (width) kilometer area. But you're right; aside from having too many climates in too small an area, it _does_ look like Africa. It's funny that you should mention the molotovs and flares, because I had a funny incident with one of them once. You know how normally, if a molotov hits the ground, it'll start a grass fire that spreads until it hits the game's built-in limit? (Yes, they had to program a limit to how far a fire could spread, at least partially to keep frame rates playable.) Well, one time, I had a molotov break over a guard's afro, and _it went out._ You read that right, the molotov _went the fuck out._ What I want to know is, what kind of fireproof hair spray was that guard using, and where can I get some? 🤣🤣🤣

The upper is most similar to "Professional Ordnance Carbon-15", quite an unicorn AR-15 polymer clone which was an answer to the 1994-2004 assault weapons ban (Forgotten weapons has a video about it). So my educated guess is that the developers took this weapon as a model inspiration for their "AR-15-ish gun", solely for the reason that Professional Ordnance went bankrupt in 2003 (FC2 came out in 2008), so there would be minimal risk of copyright infringement; especially when the assault weapon ban ended in 2004 and Bushmaster, who bought Professional Ordnance, discontinued the manufacture of Carbon-15 in the original form that is depicted in the game.
