This is how all videos SHOULD be- concise, informative, straight to the point, not rushed nor self indulgent, with just a touch of levity that doesn’t break the flow of essential information. Masterful! Very much appreciated! Content is great too!
Agreed. He didn't even try to sell us anything.
YES
Agree! Great video
So glad he didnt say I'll I'm going to tell you in just a minute
Exactly my thoughts! 👍
0:34 1) Left to Right (keep eyes on same plane, don't overextend just go till you meet resistance, one side is likely dominant) 1:01 2) Look up-Look down (hand on chest to focus the neck muscles going up muscle-stretch felt in front, pivot from top of skull keeping neck high tucking in chin) 1:41 3) Tilt ears up and up (lower ear doesn't dip to shoulder, but rather upper ears rises straight up, muscle-stretch felt on sides of neck) 2:08 4) Cell-phone Drill (hands on chest, pull chin back "fat-face" or "double chin", forward will feel muscle-stretch at back of neck) 2:37 5) Janet Jakson, head slides side-to-side (Eyes are to remain level all the time and chin should not tilt) 3:06 6) Front half-circle (lift ear up, then roll chin to chest, then lift other ear up) * Always keep spine vertical Variation L1) start standing (legs 180) L2) then sit on a chair or stairs (legs at 90 degrees) L3) then be on stairs with feet on step just lower than where you sit, or a low stool. Goal is to have knees above hips (less than 90) L4 last level is a ground crouch while on back poised straight (butt almost touching or touching heels, legs fully bent closed and knees higher than hips)
Thanks a lot for the summary
Thank you for this. Now I can write them in my workout journal.

I just came across this channel and this is great, really appreciate you sharing the summary, thank you!!!!
Mark, I am 69 years of age and going through various neck issues (some arthritis, slightly bulging discs) and recently started experiencing limited mobility. I started doing your neck exercises about a month ago and the results are showing significant improvement. Pain and movement issues are disappearing more each day. Thank you so much for posting this video.
God bless
😊
Do you still continue with the exercise or only while you had a problem?

"If you see a double chin underneath your doing it correctly" Guess I've been doing it correctly for the past 15 years
Good one, dad.
😂😂😂😂 me too! 😂😂😂😂
Sooo Funny 😄
I knew this joke must have been made by someone, I am not disappointed. Thumbs up all around.
Does my 3rd chin cancel the other 2 out?
Hi, I just wanted to say that this drill genuinely HAS changed my life. About 7 months ago, I found this video, downloaded an interval timer and started doing the three minutes every morning while I was making my coffee. Within about 3 weeks I noticed a massive difference in my range of motion. But that wasn't where it ended. From that three minutes I have built a whole morning mobility and yoga drill that mobilises all of my joints and my thoracic spine and from there, I've started a daily inversion practice and from there, I started following up my mobility/yoga with a daily seated meditation. So, from your 3 minute drill I have changed my life for the better. It all starts with the neck. Thank you so much!
That's amazing! How did you build your routine, as in where did you look for exercises? If you could point me in the right direction I would really appreciate it. Thank You.

I used to be into "fitness" as a youngster, now I'm into "Wellness" as a senior. Thanks for sharing these neck routines. Neck exercises are incredibly important, as they keep the nervous system working properly. Hope you don't mind my using your platform to suggest this: One needs to be very careful not to strain in the beginning, & later it will come easier & the benefits will speak for themselves. It saddens me how most American adults cannot even squat, or tie their shoe laces without huffing & puffing. Weight gain (obesity, actually) is a major problem, and it leads to so much more. Saying "fat" is taboo, but being fat is a norm. People need to realize the extra weight is like carrying a set of luggage or heavy bag around all the time. The organs, & body parts are over burdened, and soon start to protest. LISTEN to the early warning signs: "If we listen to our body when it whispers, we won't have to hear it scream". ✌
☕🇺🇲
I'm gonna guess, the quotations on fitness serve a better purpose than on wellness ?
Same here! Mostly because I'm a middle-aged semi-senior that accumulated all sorts of snapped shit from being a "fitness" enthusiast youngster. What changed my life was being diagnosed with cervical stenosis (spinal cord compression from disc herniation). Best thing to ever happen, sort of, as it completely changed how I design my weightlifting routines as well as paved way for me to implement a wellness routine that focuses the basic human functions we've lost as a modern species.
@@rauberhotzenplotz6657 Ohhh kkkkay - I just deleted my LONG & serious explanation. I get it, you guys are making fun of those "quotation" marks!? I tend to use caps & quotation marks a lot .... and sure I can take a joke -NOWWW I GET ITTT!!!!!! L😆L!?

Hi Mark. After watching your video about 20 months ago, I started. It took about 8 months to be able to achieve max neck flexibility of looking to the right. I had to take the drastic step of moving my head by gently forcing my head to the right by holding my chin and back of head because I simply could not get the movement using neck muscle. It was simply too painful. After about a year of doing this, very very gradually increasing the movement, the cracking stopped and now I can move my head freely to the right without hands. Sleeping in max right position every night helped massively and was pivotal to my recovery. This injury was caused by 30 years of sleeping on one side only, perpetuated by the pain I had every time I tried sleeping on the other side. Now I sleep on front or back but head firmly in the extended far right position. The comfort I now get from this is permanent and pain-free. You indeed changed my life and I sincerely thank you. I can look both ways now when crossing the road! 😃
That’s great but you shouldn’t sleep on your front especially with a turned head. It’s loads of stress on the nerves and joints. Bob and Brad talk about this.
This has to be one of most useful 3min clips ever, so grateful for the upload Mark
0:34 looking left to right to the point of discomfort 1:00 looking up then down, pivot from top ofskull 1:40 ears straight up, stretch in neck 2:08 jutting chin forward, sucking chin in. get that double chin 2:36 "janet jackson", sliding head from side to side, keeping eyes level 3:01 frontal semi-circle; ear up, chin to chest, next ear up, repeat
Lol silly person
your profile pic is a vaginor
this is what I wanted-- a summary!
Might add the final note: Do the exercises standing, seated with thighs horizontal, or seated with legs up as if in a squatting position, using a different method each day.
Wow is there some reason I can't do the 'Janet Jackson' one? lol
head slide can be hard to learn (ex belly dancer). stand with back & back of head touching a wall. for some reason the touch of the wall on the back of the head made it possible for every person who had been unable to master this movement. once movement is learned you no longer need the wall. be gentle & patient. you have probably never moved you neck like this in your life. if you feel no movement still try every day because there is stuff happening inside you just cant feel it. dont push it. 1 day when it is ready it will surprise you & start to move. once again dont push it be gentle
Thanks. I was not doing Janet proud. Now I can!
Thanks very much for this tip!
i can hear little popping doing this motion, doesnt hurt though lol
Thanks, can’t do Janet yet..will use this to help get there.
I really can't do it. Am I just stupid or could it be because my neck is fused? My neck doesn't move this way at all!
Gotta say, right from the first try I could tell that these stretches were engaging my neck is ways that I didn’t know how to do myself. Now it’s up to myself to incorporate this into my life.
30 Sec each Exercise Turn head left and right Look up and down Tilt ear up to sky, each side Extend head forward, retract head back Slide head from side to side Lift ear up, chin to chest, each side
Thank you
Well said
Here are all the exercises in the video: 1 - Turn head left to right - 0:34 2 - Place two hands on your chest and look up and down, still keep the neck upright when looking down - 1:00 3 - Lift ear to the sky, make neck longer, not shorter - 1:40 4 - "The Cellphone Drill" Drive your head forward and back - 2:07 5 - "The Janet Jackson" Slide head from left to right, keep two hands on the chest - 2:36 6 - Front half head circle; Lift right ear to the sky, chin to chest, lift left ear to the sky - 3:01 Try to do each exercise every day for at least 30 seconds - comes out to exactly 3 minutes. You can alternate doing the exercises standing and sitting from one day to the other. When sitting, try to get your hips lower than your knees, similar to when you're in a squat position. Good luck to all of you! I'll also try to do these every day from now on!
Thanks so much or this, makes it easier.
@@obiwan5999 Glad to hear that, Master Obi Wan!
@@Bountynuma : )

The only thing he seemed to forget was to fold his hands on his chest for the first move. He does so and mentions it for every other move. I see no mechanical reason why he would intentionally not do so on the first move, so I plan to do so for all the moves.
30 seconds each 1. Look left and right 2. Look up and down (tuck chin) 3. Head tilt (make the neck longer) 4. Cellphone drill (forward and back) 5. Janet Jackson (slide from side to side with eyes level) 6. Half rotations (lift your ear, chin to chest)
I found it easier to just count 20 reps, 10 each side. That way you're not trying to look down at your watch / phone and just focus on keeping correct posture. It takes like a minute longer.
I just did this. Thanks!
I was wondering how many movements. But this is a good direction. Did I miss him say 30 seconds?
@@razorsharp9850at 4:40, don't get too hung up on the time. do 5-10 reps of all exercises in both directions and you are good to go.

I'm 61 and my neck has been getting noticeably stiffer with less movement over the last few months after working in the building trade for years. I've been doing these exercises for a week now and am noticing improvement already. I didn't have a timer so instead I just count 30 movements for each of the six exercises and sometimes do a few extra as well. Thanks very much for this video Mark. 👍

I am 70. I messed up my neck and shoulder doing yard work. I went to a chiropractor every week for 2 months. It would help for a couple of days. Then I found this neck drill! I do them every morning. I also like the one for the shoulders. I haven't been to the chiropractor at all in the month of July. Thanks, Mark

Thank you for reminding me of these exercises. My late husband was very knowledgeable about the body and he taught me these, but after he passed away I stopped doing them. He always told me to make sure that I did them very slowly though and you didn’t mention that. I find that helpful, especially since I’m older, so I just wanted to throw that out there. I have a tricky neck due to a couple of car accidents, so it helps me if I take caution because I tend to move rather quickly. I’m going to do these every day!
excercising in slow motion allows me personally to keep the accuracy of movement and to extend its revitalizing effect to over 3 minutes.

Thank you, Mark, for the great advice on what to watch out for when performing these exercises. People may be unaware that these exercises are beneficial not only for neck mobility, but also for blood pressure, eye sight, and brain functioning, to name a few advantages.
Raise the ear! Wow - that change of intent makes a real difference. Thanks.

Neck and shoulder blade pain stopped!!! Thank you, Mark. After decades of pain, tightness, spasms, doctors, physical therapists, traction, pills, etc., I have found great relief with these stretches.
Thank u for ur thorough explanations. Far too often people on KZhead just give exercises without taking into account some of us have neuromuscular problems and doing exercises in those faulty patterns doesn’t help. Thorough explanations helps walk us through things so we’re more present and focusing on how we’re doing/feeling the exercise and not just repeating bad reps over and over again

@@lorilaw2604 I have a very significant neck injury, and suffer with life long headaches. My thoughts about your response after doing these exercises myself. If you are not used to exercising your neck and or have injury or knots etc., move very slowly, and do not over stretch, particularly until you get the hang of things. I must add an adjunct should you take the peppermint essential oil( e.o) recommendation. Peppermint e.o. is excellent for pain, but never apply directly to the skin without a carrier oil (jojoba, olive oil etc), and particularly if you are applying near the face such as temples, use a very low dilution..a drop or two of organic peppermint e.o in a tsp. (5 ml). You may use a bit higher dilution of it is on your neck, knee etc, but peppermint is very strong and effective, a little goes a long way. Best to you❣
@@lorilaw2604 I'm not a Christian, but Judy's thing about a spirit of fear may have some truth to it. The therapy known as EMDR is often used to treat people who've suffered serious physical trauma such as neck injury, and it often turns out that the persistent physical symptoms are really a psychological response to the trauma. EMDR often brings relief very quickly in instances like this, so I'm told. If Judy's approach isn't your kind of thing, you could try this instead. Good luck.

It is not a cheap trick. It is mobility stretching. Your whole body needs it. You did a great job explaining and demoing. I am 68 and teach Pilates and incorporate most of these moves. Strength and flexibility will give you long lean muscles. Start slow and build up. Good health to all.
You don't get it! He calls it a cheap trick because you are getting in other exercises while you are doing neck exercises. That's the trick, cheap is saying it doesn't cost you any more(effort etc). lol. Do you actually think he actually thinks for one minute it's an actual trick!
can i do it while lying down ?
The fuck does "long lean muscles" mean? You can't permanently make your muscles any "longer" by exercising. Your muscle insertion points and tendons remain in the same place throughout adulthood. Lean muscles? Intra-muscular fat is lost by losing fat in general, not by doing any specific type of exercising. That's a lot of pseudo-science you're sharing with the world, Rana. Don't misinform people.
@@vidyamancer7135 Look at ballet dancers. They have long and lean muscles, which comes from continually stretching the belly of the muscle. So yes, it prevents the muscle from shortening and contracting, which is tends to do especially with age. Pilates is not "pseudoscience"
The body is a machine. It will seize up if not moved.
Great content, thank you for creating something valuable to us all.
Thank you so much for the “ear up” pointer. what a difference that makes in noticing the stretch.
Omg right!!!!! Why am I just learning this now? Feels SO much more effective!
Revelation!
Yes any chiropractor that ever recommended this Did not explain like that..just said tilt head from side to side
totally, have been trying neck stuff for a long time and that one simple trick has helped heaps
It also helps to think of the same thing - elongating the neck - when tilting the head straight back. Many people "crunch" the neck vertebrae when stretching in this direction, which can cause major problems. Making sure to lift the head vertically at the same time as tilting back gives a better stretch and avoids damaging the cervical vertebrae.
Holy Shit! Immediate relief. I could feel the tension in the back of my head dissipate while I was doing it. Thank you!
I'm a 67 year-old professional saxophonist. I wish I had known about these drills when I started playing. Wrist tendonitis really hampered my career. Every body worker I have seen has told me that my wrist problems were caused by compression in my neck. After retiring from a Washington, D.C. military band, I returned to school to get a doctorate in performance. Within a year of practicing 4 and 5 hours a day, my wrists basically crapped out on me. I also got burning pain in my hands and tremors in my fingers. This was in my mid forties. I've developed strategies that allow me to play (ice dipping after each practice, taking vitamin B1, and of course, lots of stretching), but the time I spend practicing is limited. I have to rehab for an hour for every hour I play. I do lots of score study, and I play very slowly for ninety percent of the session. I think if I had done these exercises all along, I might not have had these problems. Getting a special neckstrap that keeps the weight of the instrument off of my neck helps, but standing and playing more ergonomically might have kept me from needing one. Fifty plus years is a long time to have eight pounds hanging off of your neck. I'm going to start doing these and see what happens.
Thanks for the video. 🌱
Thank you so much for sharing this, MW.
Look up big homestead- heal his arthritis with moringa
Have cervical stenosis and vertigo issues. Don’t know if these are for me or not.
Much of the problems you describe are, FOR CERTAIN, aggravated by a inflammatory reaction to some food(s) that you have overconsumed for years. I have to take long breaks from eating grains (not permanently abstaining) to get rid of many aches and pains (some incapacitating) that made me miserable before DO give it a try.
Seriously, my neck readjusted during one of these! Thank you so much😊❤
I mean, there's no channel like this. you're amazing, man
Clear and concise - articulate and intelligent delivery. What a breath of fresh air on the exercise front ! Thank you 🇬🇧
My neck, chest and the front and top of my right shoulder have been hurting for days. I do a lot of neck stretches and even some of these exercises but doing all of these really helped a lot more than just stretching. I will do them daily now for sure.
I just did this routine, with the timer. My neck, shoulders and upper back feel incredibly different after just once. I foam rolled and stretched afterwards and i was popping and cracking all over the place. You dont realize how much of a key player your neck is. Ive been struggling with my neck, shoulders and upper back for months due to anxiety and this video by far has done the most for me. To anyone dealing with any of these issues I have, I HIGHLY recommend this routine. Thank you so much to the poster.
Best exercise program ever from KZhead imo. You are quick to demonstrate and so easy to listen to, informative; you keep moving, you don't make us wait 10 mins for the exercises, and you don't go into all the boring anatomy (to me) stuff. You are the gold standard.
I’ve been doing a similar set several times a week for years. It slowly eliminated the “crunchy” sounds after a few months. Now it’s just a part of my morning stretch routine.
Yes! My habit is to stretch until the crunchy sounds are all gone. It seems the crunchy sound was associated with my hands and arms falling asleep while I was sleeping at night. Now that I look for and prevent the crunchies my arms don’t fall asleep while I’m sleeping anymore
@@TiffanyTeaLeaves this is wild, I have the crunchies and my hands and arms fall asleep at night too. Was told it was from curling my wrist but it still happens with a brace on. Perhaps it all is coming from the neck. Thanks for connecting these thoughts in my head!
@@TiffanyTeaLeaveswow this is amazing. My arms fall asleep all the time and I have the craziest crunchies. Thank you for putting the two together.
bro, no, you cracked all your nuts in your head this is bad
Oooh.. I need this ..
This is fantastic. I can hear and feel it working. Great to see a helpful KZhead video that gets straight to the point. Thank you.
I've been doing most of these exercises for years. I'm 70 and my neck is often very stiff and sometimes painful. Due to a lifetime of poor posture, I'm a little hunched and my head and neck are perpetually forward. I just happened to see your video in my "feed" and knew I had to watch it. Thanks!
This is great! Thanks so much for putting this online. I was in a severe car accident almost 20 years ago and I've had neck trouble ever since. I've done 2 sets of these a day for 5 days and already have improved neck mobility.
These exercises resolved for me a long, painful series of neck, shoulder and arm problems arising from a change of pillows and mattress. I am extremely grateful to you. A thousand thanks !
This has seriously helped my stiff neck! GREAT exercises! Thank you!
I would love to give you a big hug for this tutorial. Thank you!! 😊 I wake up most mornings with a dull pain at the base of my skull. I'm sure it's from being a side sleeper, but after watching you demonstrate these moves, I know it isn't just the way I rest.
From a training perspective, I don't believe your explanation and demonstration could be any better. Well done and I, for one, am starting this to see how it helps my neck. Thanks.
I feel a huge relaxing feeling after doing these even for less than 3 minutes! Thank you!
I have been watching videos for several years for neck pain. This is the first one that has helped. It gives instant relief. I get severe pain in the occipital area on the right and down the neck into the scapula. Also get it while riding my motorcycle. Thanks very much.
As someone that has been sitting for the last 32 years of my life this is brilliant. Love this.
Please get up!
I had an opposite response. Because of my age, I am almost 60, and because I was not putting my hands on my chest the way Mark says, after a month my neck started hurting. Often when I was sleeping, at night and then in the morning my neck was hurting. And so I watched his video again and I realized that I was overextending myself. And I followed him as closely as I could how he said to put your hands on your chest. And I made it a real effort not to try to hard to extend in any direction. And now, after doing that this morning, my neck feels much better already! Thank you, this is a lesson for me.
Yeah the body work stuff is always a bit of a voyage. If something hurts then it's definitely not where you want to be, regardless of what you were trying to do or are hoping to achieve.
Yep. You can overdo anything. Listen to your body 🍻
How do you feel now old man :)?
This video is a lifesaver! Thank you for making this! My mom is 79 yesterday and will benefit greatly from this information as will I.
Thank you SO MUCH for this simple, great complete neck exercise!!!
"Not so far that we snap our own neck." Good thing you pointed that out !! ^^
Excellent, excellent, excellent. This goes nicely with my PT exercises that I do multiple times a week. Some are exercises that I already do. Some are new. Thank you!
the ear one omg. also its amazing how much of this stuff we do naturally without realising we are doing an actual exercise. been doing this by chance and habit now but not as a part of my routine, but here and there from habit but this is awesome
I'm so grateful for this video. I had a bicycle accident a few years ago and my neck has never been the same. This helps stretch it out so I don't feel so tense.
How come what Mark says is clear and easy to remember? I’ve been instructed in similar exercises before, but it never sunk in. But when Mark says it - bam! Total clarity and easy to recall.
It's a gift
He's stairing at you.
This really helped my chronic neck pain. 1 month in. THANK YOU MARK !!!
Very simple and yet effective relief of the pain in the stiff, cramped neck muscles. Great tips. I am going to do them every day.
