Follow me in the field as I photograph a more waterfall trails in South Wales, while discussing my experience shooting with both a Nikon D750 and a D850. Which camera is better? Which camera should you use? Is the D750 retired?!

  • D750 is a great camera and still holds a reasonable financial value even today - it's sad how concerned people are with gear these days. Your photos look great whatever camera you use, and you are a lesson to your viewers that you can use any camera and get great images, and I wish people would focus more on that.

    • Agree. Due to my needs I find something like the Z30 perfect for me, even though I'm not who it was designed for. Pared down features in a compact form with a flippy screen and no EVF, and 20MP is basically all I need for my photos. ✨

    • I use a 90D and 850D . And i've zero plans to jump to mirrorless because it's pointless and unaffordable .. And am more than happy with what i have . If i do buy another Camera it will be a 5D 2nd hand ... as Canon have increased the price to nearly 3 grand i saw on Wex

    • There's always been an amount of snobbery and social climbing within the photography hobby. In the 80's it was medium format versus 35mm. Now it's full frame versus crop sensors. But I still find people must have the latest gear, just to show off. I've got a Nikon D810. It does everything I want. No need for the D850. People who need extra pixels so they can crop, can't compose properly, or they are too lazy to move themselves. BTW, I only use 3 prime lenses. No zooms.

I'm trying to teach myself to slow down but I always sort-of panic yet.

  • As someone who mainly photographs wildlife, I switched over to the Sony A1 a year or so ago. However, I have retained my D850 and it accompanies me on my road trips for the landscape stuff for two reasons. Primarily because it's just an excellent camera, secondly because it means I don't have to change lenses on the Sony when I'm changing photography mode. I even bought a new D850 when my first one met with an unfortunate accident, thankfully the insurance covered that. I enjoy the channel, keep the videos coming and good luck.

  • Oh Courtney... if it's not dancing in the rain forest, it's chasing down an umbrella in a stream, you truly have me looking forward to your next video! Here in western Canada, our forests have been ablaze from May, and they are still burning...so most of my landscape images are not up to par because of the smoke, but a recent 1 week solo road-trip 'photo-shoot' was a lot of fun! I do look forward to our rainy season upcoming, but my roots from my Grandfather is Welsh, so I do love seeing the wonderful locations you choose, and your personality goes well in enjoying the video process you give us.

I can also vouch for your sponsor. Last night I received my "like new" older camera and it was the one posted in the decryption with accurate shutter count. It even looked better in my hands than it did in the picture.

  • Courtney, I recently came across your channel and I must say I enjoy your subjects and presentation. I also enjoy your humor, as it seems to reflect what I’ve come to appreciate about British humor. While I make no apologies for it, my humor tends to be more on the morbid side. I suppose it is a reflection of almost 50 years in law enforcement. I also appreciate your hybrid photographic philosophy, as I also make use of this technique. I’ve gone through many cameras in my time, and being an old fart, I began serious photography in the early 1970s using a Speed Graphics 4x5 for crime scene documentation. As said in the commercials, “We’ve come a long way, Baby.” I envy your photographic opportunities with the number of streams and woodlands. We too have woodland in my area of Texas, however, it being typical Texas weather, the local temperatures are just shy of the surface of Mercury (the sunny side that is). I currently have two Nikon D850s and a myriad of lenses from wide-angle to super-telephoto. I long ago decided to invest my money in quality lenses and I’ve always believed that the lens is the heart of any camera. As you have stated, good photography can be had with almost any camera body. But, I believe a quality lens is the key. In any event, keep the videos coming. I do enjoy them. Larry from Texas - where the men are manly, and the women are not.

  • Excellent video Courtney. I am glad to hear that you were able to rescue your umbrella. I came up with the saying " It is not the size or number of megapixels, but, how you use them." I can take beautiful pictures with a six megapixel DSLR, just as easily as I can take garbage pictures with a camera that has four times or more the number of megapixels.

  • I have owned both cameras - still own and use the D850. I do miss my D750 for the reason you stated; it was/is just so comfortable - a perfect fit!! I also got better color out of the D750 and lower noise. I love going back in my files and looking at D750 pics. However, recent advancements in RAW software make the color and noise differences moot. I am addicted to the Crop Modes in the D850 - they turn quality primes into 2-3 position zooms!! Having 45mp is just so addicting and convenient!!

    • I've often wondered, regarding the D850 with it's larger RAW image sizing, if one's computer's resources would be the point as to where one should decide on keeping the D750 with it's RAW size about half the size? My old MacBook Pro, used for editing slows to a crawl, so my thought was always that anything larger would put an end to editing! Nonetheless, I bought my D750 in 2014 when they first came out, and it's still working as good today as it did when brand new. Just last week I bought a 27" iMac computer, with 32 GB of Ram, the best graphics card possible when built, and a 1 TB SSD to help speed things up, and it is more than capable (finally) for my editing purposes! But, I'm still going to retain using my D750, basically for the reasons Courtney mentioned, where it just feels good in the hands, and having had it so long, I know where each button is, without really having to think about it, giving me more time to decide on composition and what camera settings will give me the best result!

  • Both great cameras and great comparaison :) To add to the points in the differences, for the milky way shooters, the D850 "processes" the stars better, as it will less consider them as hot pixels to correct. Also less dark-ring around the stars. May influences some people in their choice. But not much for daylight landscape :) Keep up the good work :)

  • Philip here from Australia. Interestingly, I’m in the same situation as you. I’ve had a D850 for almost a year, and still have my 750 I had for years prior. Only difference is I also have a 3 legged thing L bracket, but not sure how to connect it to my tripod. So don’t use it. Anyway, I agree with a lot of that you say, however in the last two months, my d850 has proven to me why it’s regarded as the greatest DSLR ever made. I never noticed the perfect exposure with perfect light balance it can produce until only the last few months since I got it a year ago. Perfect contrast, it’s faster focus and focusing modes. However, the z9 is drawing me. Mirrorless may be irresistible. May need to sell everything I own just to afford it. Great video, great angles in your video, good lighting etc. You’re killing it. Thanks.

  • I dithered back and forth over a 750 or 850. I did get a nice used low mileage D750 for a very good price. I finally decided on it as I’m mostly a film user these days and have some nice f mount lenses for my F4 and they are very usable and capable on the D750. The D850 would have cost me considerably more and since I got a Z7 for my birthday two yrs ago I didn’t need the extra pixels of the 850. I have no Z mount lenses but rather use the FTZ adapter and have been very happy using my old lenses on the Z7

  • You get focus peaking & highlight warnings in live view with the D850?

  • Great video. I have a D750 (2 actually, I don't know why). Is it just me or do the colours seem to be better with the 850 in your comparrisons. Is it the camera or your workflow?

  • Nice work. I also upgraded from a D610 to a D850. IQ wise, theres is a small upgrade, but features wise, in terms of practibility, it makes the diference in helping focus in the most important, the focus in the moment.

  • Quick question: (or maybe a slow onre?) What goes into your decision for choosing and aperture value when you're shooting landscapes, more particular - waterfalls? Another enjoyable watch Ms. Courtney, even though I'm a Canon shooter (EOS R). One more thing - your editing skills are probably as sweet as your image making skills!

  • I bought the D850 a year ago. Thought about the 750 but decided this is probably my last DSLR so the extra MP would serve me longer. But either way I would have been very happy.
