Why did I get the AMAZING Nikon D850

I have been in a transition from my NIKON D810 to the NIKON D850. In this video I explain why I chose the D850 and share some of my first impressions, and a couple of niggles. This is not a full review of the camera. I believe you need to use a camera for a period of time before you can carry out a review. Therefore in the future I might do an update on this beast of an imaging machine. As always at the end, there is a preview of the next video where I take Helen and the D850 out on a proper shoot.

  • Over the past 5 years I have transitioned into full frame starting with the Nikon D750 then made a leap to the D800E which opened my eyes to 36mp….and now with the D850. With the addition of the focus peaking and focus shift (focus stacking) it just does so much I’m not sure if I need anything else for my type of shooting. I still use a 256gb SD card and it allows me enough bursts for any wild life shots before slowing down the buffer. Recently I’ve been looking at the Z9 but as many bells and whistles it has….most I will never need. Another camera in the future might get my attention but for now the D850 is ‘the beast’.

  • Cracking video. I’m just about to jump ship from Canon to the D850. I mainly shoot aviation and I’m hoping the D850 will take my shots to a different level. The ability to crop and not lose detail really appeals to me, as I’ll mainly be using a telephoto lens.

  • So glad you did this video as I traded up from my D750 to a second hand D850 about a year ago. The reason was my interest in landscape and artistic photography looking for best picture quality in terms of dynamic range and precision. Of course the existing fine selection of glasses held me back to go for a mirrorless camera - in the end the difference in weight and size doesn't justify the much higher price and at my age (about same I guess) it wouldn't make sense to invest such an amount of money more so because I'm still well below the skill level I would like to be (the story of my life as an amateur photographer!). I enjoyed your video ver much because it confirmed my decision at best and your honesty throughout the presentation confirms me that I'm not alone in making mistakes.

I have since been out and captured some landscape shots and the detail is just amazing, mirrorless is not for me. Thank you for watching, enjoy your photography.

  • Hi Craig, i wanted to become a photographer since the age of 14, got my very first camera then, a kodak 110 sport, built in flash and all, a schoolboys dream, but alas it was to expensive for me to further myself in photography, now at the age of 52 i am going into professional photography, i never stopped making pictures, i suffered a heart attack and had quadruple bypass surgery, now i can not go back to construction where i worked 33 years, i bought a studio from a friend's wife, (he was a professional photographer) when he passed, the lenses are awesome, 24-70 f2.8, 80-300 f2.8, 150-500 f5.6, 50 f1.8, 35mm f1.8, fish eye and a few more, but i need to upgrade my cameras, i have a d300s, and a d7000, great cameras, but yes need to upgrade, saving for a d850, still very expensive in South Africa, even used if you can find one, but yes, hopefully by January 2024 i will have one, thanks for a great video.

    • Hi Gideon. That certainly is an awesome range of lenses. Nikon is about to release the Z8 which may or may not tempt photographers to jump into the mirrorless fray. Not me, after a year with the D850 it continues to deliver quality images and will do for years to come-you will not be disappointed. Thank you for watching and all the best with your professional photography.

I have the Fuji X-T1+ 55-70mmF3.5-5.6 and X-Pro 1+ 18-55mm for wildlife and experimenting that replace a Pansonic LX3 and LX5. I'm saving for a 2nd hand D850. I need to upgrade to AFS 24-70mmF2.8 E VR and AFS 70-200mmF2.8 E VR and a 2nd hand AFS 400mmF2.8 G VR +1.4XTCiii that will replace my old AF 300mmF2.8 IF-ED screw drive lens. I need to upgrade my computer and I'm upgrading slowly because I’m poor. Next Year I will get a Zeiss Milvus 50mm F2.0 Macro. I still have analogue MF cameras as Fuji GW 690iii, HB 503CW and Mamiya 7iii. I'm too old too start over with Z-system but I rather switch to FUJI GFX before that. I maybe get the Z8 in 6 year time with a FTZ adapter if I can afford it.

    • Keep your D810. I downgraded to the D850 a year and half ago, and all I can say about the D850, is that it is a Piece of Shit. Has never focused properly, regardless of Lens, AF mode, AF settings, AF Fine Tuning. Has horrible Battery Life, less than 300 shots per Charge, on any of the 3 Batteries. Spots of Banding appear in the Images, including the NEF files. Halos and Mosquito Effects are all over the place, even a ISO64. Very Noisy Images by 400ISO. Has been back to Nikon Twice. Nikon claims the Fecal Matter is with Factory 'Tolerances'. Those 'Tolerances' must be wide enough to drive 3 or 4 Semi Trucks through, Side by Side. It had a Clean Sensor, til Nikon cleaned it. Now EVERY Picture taken since it was returned has a blotch. WORST DSLR I have ever owned, correction, WORST Camera I have ever touched.

The two camera systems will be different to operate, so your choice might depend on what you have experienced so far with other cameras. I have very much grown up with the DSLR system. • Mario: If you get a chance to use that D850 again I would suggest to check the white balance setting. I’ve had my D850 for two years and have always kept the white balance on ‘Auto’ for my JPEG’s and it has never given me a tint. Craig mentioned shooting RAW which does not include any settings like white balance, picture controls…etc..etc…RAW is RAW and you have full control through post processing. Also remember what you see on back of the camera is a JPEG on a small screen. Hope this helps…

  • I still shoot with the D810 & might purchase the D850 for the flippy screen, DR, & focus stacking also, but I also shoot wildlife. But if my use case was like yours (not shooting wildlife) I would of went with the Z7II. PS; The volume between your voice & the music is to far apart for the video. Just trying to help. Happy shooting.

  • How is low light performance of the D850 vs the D800? I found myself shooting in expanded ISO mode recently (night) and photos are really noisy unfortunately... Would you choose a D780 over a D850? (I am a "serious hobbyist", not a pro).

    @jd5787@jd5787 Жыл бұрын
    • Hi JD, I have never used expanded mode on either camera. I did some night photography last night and used 800 iso for hand held shots and then switched to 64 iso with tripod. 800 iso needed some noise reduction in the shadows the 64 iso was super clean. I did look at the D780 but wanted to higher sensor resolution. D800 36mp, D780 25mp. D850 45mp. I shoot raw and the D850 produces 50mb files, which can slow light room down when it comes to processing. I think the D780 produces 25mb files. I downloaded some example raw files when the D850 first came out and realised I would eventually need a faster processor. I currently have a windows 11 based system with 32mb of Ram and a INTEL i9 Processor which deals with the raw files fairly quickly. From the reviews I read the D780 produces some awesome images.

  • D850 is an excellent camera but slow Frame rate, a mere 5 frames / sec. Nikon should have move it up with new processor, and higher resolution for its screen. Unfortunately, Nikon fails every feature for greatness of DLSR

    @chingo3625@chingo3625 Жыл бұрын
    • @@LMoProVisualComm Just too slow. Look at Z50, more than 10 frame/sec and it is not sport camera. It is the processor that can not handle the amount of data.

    • @@LMoProVisualComm I have the D850 too. The frame rate is needed when you need it even not in sport mode. If Nikon put newer processor into to speed up, that would be different story.

    • The D850 was not designed to be a sports camera with a gagillion frames per second. Landscape, portraits, product, architecture, and other commercial applications don't require a high frame rate. Not every camera is designed for everything under the sun.
