A guy finally bought his first Jeep! The "wrong year wrangler"! We needed something to tow behind our old RV, so the obligatory Jeep was acquired. I bought this old wrangler out of North Carolina and had it towed back to my shop where my Son and I will attempt to repair it, and hopefully it start, run, and drive once again!

Me and the wife been trying for kids for 6-7 years. No luck. Seeing you and your boy working together really pulls on the heartstrings. You're a lucky man.
If anything like friends who have been trying, it'll happen when you least expect it. One friend gave up entirely and within a year their lives got turned completely upside down - twins!
Hey derek. So a few things 1- the 4.2/4.0 series of engines do run at 210. 2- the rust in the windshield frame is normal. Quadratec has replacement frames for fairly cheap 3- the weber carb is an aftermarket replacement. Factory came with Carter YF computer feedback carbs, which is why there was an O2 sensor. 4- find a donor YJ or TJ with the 4.0 and steal the AX15 . The BA10/5 was an extremely weak trans, and getting parts fornthem now is almost impossible. Keep up the good vidsos!

This fella is dead right. The straight 6 jeeps like 210 and the needle should stay just straight up and down when they’re cooling well.

I own an '06 (TJ) with the 4.0L and 6 speed. 3.73 Dana 44 axles (put in the electric lockers myself. People have offered me stupid money for it. I'd rather lose an arm.

I had same jeep last summer for a woods rig it was pretty fun for a guy cheap and way more better then a side by side and alot cheaper
I work for jasper engine's and our factory in willow springs Mo. builds the 6 cyl AMC that has a 3 year 100,000 mile transferable warranty. Use that number on that tag and jasper should be able to tell you the mileage of the jeep when it was installed

Bentley is the possibly the best mechanics assistant there is he always pays attention, asks all the questions and learns from his mistakes (very few) and he has the best teacher you could ask for ...I foresee great things for this young man.

I just want you to know I recently purchased a 09 Wrangler as a hobby/Pre-Project retirement driver, and bang there you are with your Wrangler. I have a disabled son. This is one of my favorite episodes. Working with Bently and watching you spark his brain is inspirational. I wish soooo much that I could have that relationship with my son. I love the family interaction and would love to see more. Best wishes.
I hope you can find a suitable connection with your son through Lego, Meccano or even just pulling a lawnmower apart and putting it back together. I am the primary carer for my disabled brother and we have Great times together.

My dad used to not do much with me because he didn't think I could do much with my disability. It took guys like Derek on the internet teaching me things so I can get in the shop and start doing it myself. There's always something you can do.

Jeeps are the ultimate offroad vehicle. If you just upgrade the engine, trans, driveline, axles, wheels, suspension, and shocks, you're basically ready to go.
Everyone hates on the square headlight Jeeps, but as long as you have the inline engine and a manual, you get a decent Jeep.
It's not so much the headlights that jeepers hate. Well, yeah, it is a bit of it lol but it's mostly the suspension setup. The suspension is a lot lower from the factory. So it takes a lot more lift to get you where you want to be compared to the previous cj or the TJ/LJ that followed it.

I had an 04 TJ, and I can tell you it was the best I’ve had. What a unit.
@@nathanwoten6236.. it aint the ride height. The suspension is covered wagon technology so getting to where you want to be isn't a big deal.. it's definitely the headlights...lol

Truly enjoy the banter between father and son. Simple questions and simple answers, no question too simple not to deserve an answer. This young man respects his dad’s knowledge without reserve. One on one time teaching and interacting will give the kid a serious advantage. The role of fathers is under-valued nowadays, but Derek's giving that boy the best kind of two-parent experience.

I have a 1993 YJ with the 4.0 and 5 speed. They are simple and easy to wrench on. No laptop, no scan tool. Just good old fashioned nuts and bolts.

Hey Derek, when you get your new garage doors, you should have exhaust ports installed in them so you can hook up a hose and run the motor all day. Hate to see you build up that poison in your body. The little humans and Jess want to see you stick around for a long time . We used those ports in the old gas stations in the 70's. They work great. Love the show and your family.

These square headlight jeeps aren't a true jeep in My opinion. They still ok . But newer jeeps aren't near as cool or tough. Early 80 to mid 80s is where they went down hill. Not being a hater. The new ones are cool for looks. But toughness. Not so much

I'm a CJ owner but still have a fondness for the YJs. Hell, even the TJs are good Jeeps. But I would never own anything beyond the TJ. The last of the newer model Jeeps will be carried to the boneyard behind a TJ.
I owned an 89 YJ for about 2 years before my family outgrew it and I had to sell it. But I fell in love with it. And I agree with you, the TJ is definitely the last of good Jeeps. And don't get me started on those 4 door things that call themselves a Jeep.

There is a patience to mechanical work that my father did not have and I have taken it upon myself to finger it out and have used fixing and rebuilding as a metaphor for recovery from brain injury. You are so blessed with your demeanor and teaching with your sons. All parents are just figuring things out and you folks engage your kids very well with love and guidance, Thanks for sharing that with others. Seeing you interact with your boys, takes me back to the days of middle school when my dad made me go with him to his shop on Saturdays to "help" him with his projects. At the time, I didn't enjoy it, because I felt like it was demanded that I be there. My "duty" so to speak. But once I started learning what he was "teaching" me, I soaked it up like a sponge!!! He helped me build my first hod rod when I was 15. It was a 1973 RS Camaro with a 396 with a 400 turbo with 3:73 gears and a pretty stout cam and a 750 Holley double pumper!!!! She would run 11:30's all day long. He taught me all the tricks!!!! I really enjoy the videos that you do with your boys!!! My dad passed away Christmas day 2017. I miss him so much. But I treasure the times we spent in his shop. He taught me so much about cars, but he also taught me so much about life!!!. So many parents don't take the time with their kids and they end up being raised by the internet and video games. Your boys will so much more grounded because of the time you spend with them. They will be problem solvers!!!! I hope you have much continued success and prosperity!!! You are the real deal!!!! Thank you for all you do!!!!!
Came for the YJ, stayed as I re-lived my childhood watching your son climb into the engine compartment, just like I did with my dad... And watch the Speedo, if those are 31's I'd bet it's off over 30mph... My 95 is, need to order the correct speedo gear
I grew up working on cars with my Dad holding a flashlight, grabbing a wrench, scrapping gaskets, wiping down tools and searching for nuts or bolts in the junk box.. I learned a lot about cars in the process. Watching you work with your boys brings back good memories...I miss my pop.....thanks for the videos.....
I remember my dad teaching me to work on our old '55 Chevy station wagon. He first taught me to change brake shoes on drum brakes. From then on, I was in charge of the brakes. I learned a lot from my dad & I miss him dearly. Cheers from eastern TN

My wife needs a jeep you could give it to her she just got over cancer and she's doing great now thank God and it was a fricken miracle. We still not sure about the extensive treatment she had gotten,, was quite of bit so after effects are a mother if ya get what I'm saying say a prayer for her, and will call it, ty Derek. My first auto-mechanics instructor showed and taught us the SAE measured data in 1975. Clearly the common people, masses still lack the proper, correct, valid information; any, every race car driver, mechanic, etc., within each team from basic dirt tracks, SPRINT cars, Micro, ARCA, Modified, Late Model, NASCAR, F1, Indy, FIA, IMSA, LeMans, etc. know with certainty their proper operating temperatures are within the proper range and higher yetf for improved performance. That is correct 210 is also known in the scientific community as the Wrangler Temperature. Regardless a vented hood (louvers) is always a good addition to the TJs don’t know enough about the YJ
@@MarianoLu just to add to all this (I replied above yours a bit ago), I was thinking it had something to do with the small size of engine bay and the heat build up. At least, somewhere in the back of my mind I remember something to that effect. I’m 50 now, first Jeep was back in high school, a 1991 Wrangler. Being in the garage is the absolute worst place you can be. A tornado WATCH means conditions are present for one to develop. Derek, you really fell into the Good hole rabbit hole on this one! To find a 1988 Wrangler with a great body/frame and a rebuilt 258 six with a Webber 2 barrel running that good! Wow!
I love that Bentley is helping. Such great dad and son time. I hope you have him wearing hearing and ventilation protection. A shop vac can damage hearing within a few minutes and spew out a lot of fine particulate matter.
