Let's take a look back to one of the most exciting swimming finals from the 2003 edition of the FINA World Championships in Barcelona. Must be watched until the very end! In a tough sprint between Pieter Van Den Hoogenband and Ian Thorpe, King of speed Alexander Popov from Russia managed to touch the wall first in a time of 48.44 winning the Gold Medal in the 100M FREE Final.

    • Toughest competitor in every final heat. He did not care about his time, his goal was only to touch first. Interestingly, he was actually a better backstroker than freestyle.

  • Ever since I have adopted Popov's kayak technique for freestyle,my freestyle has improved drastically. Amazing swimmer

  • Popov was truly awesome, so weird seeing Thorpe swimming that distance

    • Maybe, but Thorpe did manage to win 13 medals involving him swimming a 100m Freestyle at international long course meets from 1999-2004. Also got 4th in 2001 by 0.02s. Difficult to find someone with a better record

  • I remember newspapers writing greatly about Popov after the Barcelona Championships. Thought he would win again at the Olympics even though he lost at the 2000 Olympics

    • Yes, that is impressive, but if Popov raced in today's era with the nutrition, training and recovery methods I can guarantee Popov would win and when you factor Popov was a psych king he would have made his competition shiver.
