France’s Loire: Château Country
Rick Steves' Europe Travel Guide © 2014 | Along the Loire River Valley, the beautiful French countryside is studded with evocative châteaux. Home-basing in Amboise, we visit four unique castles: elegant Chenonceau, massive Chambord, stately Cheverny, and fragrant Villandry. Along the way, we tour Leonardo’s home, feed hunting dogs, enjoy the local cuisine, and savor a princely garden. #ricksteves #ricksteveseurope #loire

I haven't seen Mash in many years. Wonderful show
My wife and I with our ~4 yr old daughter and 14 month old son, took our two week trip of a lifetime in mid-May 1999. We spent 10 days in Paris and the rest in the Loire River Valley. We toured all the Chateau in this video except Cheverny. We also stayed in private Chateau's and castles (one with a real water filled and live ducks floating moat). I don't know how my wife managed it, but we stayed in several "royal" sized furnished bedrooms. In the morning we were having fine regional breakfasts over looking the river. We patronized several of the local winerys located in cool caves dug into the banks along the river. We were treated with an abundance of samples. Glorious weather the entire time. Rick Steves brings back so many wonderful memories. We researched our itinerary using Rick's travel videos and guides. So glad now that we went then rather than waited until the children were older!!!
Wonderful memories..
such a extremely-amazing memories! hope i can do the same in the future, wish me luck with my EU travel.
I am exhausted just reading about traveling with a 4 year old and 14 month old.
WoW..............France .....heaven on Earth!
I fell in love with these chateaux when I had French class in high school. Such breathtaking architecture!
This reminds me of when I went to France a few years before this episode was on KZhead. I went with about 15-20 students in my school's travel club, and was lucky to go to Paris, the Palace of Versailles, and the Loire Valley. The Loire was my favorite part, as we were surrounded by the beauty the earth that France provided. Enjoyed the history and beauty of the Chateaus of Amboise, Chenonceau, and Leonardo DiVinci's home as I hope I can someday return to a place of such beauty. From the US
I made the same trip with my French class - 46 years ago ! I never forgot it and still have the pictures 📸 . Scenery has not changed much, looks like it is being well-preserved.
This area of France is so special it makes a special sound the birds sing different and it has the most beautiful and delicious fruit trees and beautiful food gardens in the world..... the palaces are beautiful as well. Thanks for the video..
@J K this is France not the Netherlands...
Among many fortuitous occurrences in my life, discovering Rick Steves has been one of the best ones.
I only discovered him today, and I already feel the same way, Uttam. Happy travelling!
Uttam Paudel Rick takes me to all the places I would love to go but am not able to. For hours on end, I can listen to him take us traveling. I find France especially calling to me. The only stronger call I get is to Scotland from where my mom's family immigrated and Switzerland from where my father's family came. In Switzerland my maiden name, dad's name, can be found still residing in a valley there.
a very succinct and French thing to say
i agree one hundred percent.
@@StereoSoundAgent what is?
Wonderful from indonesia🇨🇵❤🇮🇩🌞💐💐💐💜🧡💛
Lovely chateaus.
We as a people, have really gone backwards; the architecture back in that day is glorious, no one ever continued building like this , I seriously doubt there's a man alive today that could match it- and without modern machines! Aloha
We have only gone backwards in terms of aesthetics. Unfortunately practical concerns have abolished aesthetics, cars the following need for roads, parking lots, car related things destroyed the ability for building classical architecture.
Before many generations, architecture and art made beautiful sensitivity by french passion.
Love this part of France and its gorgeous chateaux.
Wonderful! Amazing! France and Italy well known for their art. , culture, and asceticism ...... India has a reliable friend in Europe and it's France thanks for Rafael!
Rafale
Thank you for imparting us your travels
I rented a car in Paris and drove through the valley Chateau hopping. So much fun and beautiful.
Same
That's a good tip. I don't thik Rick mentioned how to get around.
France is so refreshing.
OMG, I love France. Can not wait to go back.
It has changed. The invaders have ruined it.😢
@@Jimfromearthoo7 You mean, like martians ?

Just like all developed countries, and this is just the beginning
@@unusualsuspect1262 France once had it much worse than now. The French will endure and overcome. They hold the power
These shows are invaluable. They provide everyone the means to experience the dreamy beauty and fine culture of Europe from the comfort of their home.
I laughed when it cut from discussion of the revolution to all the barking dogs!
I laughed just before, when I heard how "the working class rose up, chased the bankers and financiers off their estates", about 9:40. Now, if you speak about French Revolution, you usually mean that of 1789. Somehow somebody didn't get that the French Revolution wasn't against bankers and financiers, but against monarchy and nobiliy (and the Church).
Steve Smith, once again shows up just in time for dinner. Classic! Glad to see hungry Steven return; he has a wealth of knowledge on all things French.
I've been to France and to this day it is certainly one of most favorite trips taken of many throughout the world. I never could get enough of the Chateaus and Cathedrals!!! I'm sure I saw over twenty of each when I was there!! Going with a Grande Circle River Cruise we had choices of some of the things too! The food was great too!! Being polite is ingrained into their cultural traditions! Know a little French before you go! A wonderful place to visit!! Lynnae Larson
The work and the men; who designed the same in mind first, remain immortal.
A beautiful video of a beautiful place. I remember those places that I visited decades ago!
I love of Europe 🌍 ❤
My family lives here and our lineage has been traced back to the 1600s all in Pays de la Loire. I have not met them because my great great grandfather moved to Texas and we've lived here since. I have many relatives in France that I would love to meet and I want to see where we come from and learn more about my heritage. Thank you for posting videos like this where we can see some of the same things that our ancestors did when they were still alive.
You'll always be welcome in the country of your ancestors
I’m in Amboise now and this video pops up. Now, we know where to eat dinner😊
On the way to watching all of the episodes. Its incredibly amazing especially your trips Greetings from Philippines
I have always loved this series. During this time of isolation... It's good to go back and look at these I just hope Europe will be the same afterwards.
It will never be the same
Europe will be a lost civilization soon, the native population is not breeding enough. One day it will join Mohenjadaro and the great cities of Mesopotamia
Wish I can travel like this man.
I'm going on a year long history tour of Europe. Can't wait.
With who?

I just LOVE France! :) I am really looking forward to going soon! ;)
No one does travel like Rick Steves. I just ordered his book on France. Can't wait to visit this area in June.
Great video, Steve ! My family owns two chateaux in the Loire that have been in our family since the 15th century , actually both are from roughly the same century and going to visit the Loire, going back is always so relaxing; it's countryside, but it has a wonderful, peaceful feeling, almost country "county regal". To be very aware of the area's long history only makes it that much more enjoyable as a beautiful area, actually, in my opinion, , the most beautiful area that really represents the history of France. There is no other country whether in Europe or around the globe and has such a special and distinctive feel and charm , along with hundreds of kilometres of chateaux that are simply breathtaking ! I very much enjoy your travels around the world and being a small part of them , on the internet - thank you !
Incroyable,! I love France.
Within the treasure trove of Rick Steves’ travel videos, this is one of the very best!
Rick on a bike was a new experience for me 😂

Rick does such a good job, and I love how low-pressure his shows are.
Thanks for sharing! :) I am so very happy seeing the true beauty of my favorite country! Thanks to you that I am able to live with so much pride for this beautiful country! :)
Rick Steves, your videos are getting better and better, the French got a great spark with "Food" and "Art" and you bring it to life," Live for Life"
Now that I've been confined in my small flat near Barcelona, for 17 days now I will travel with you. Many thanks for giving me that oportunity.
@@juliad368 Merci, xx.
while the emphasis is on chateaux and history, the Loire Valley is also rich in local destinations of town markets, small villages with very distinctive character, fortified churches and so on. It would be a shame for any visitor to miss the latter at the expense of focus on chateaux
Wonderful region a must to visit
Very inspiring...and the subtitles are accurate.I'm going to watch all your videos,Rick.Very well done!!!Thanks.
This was a truly excellent episode, Rick!
what a garden!!

Thank you so much for sharing these shows on YT. They are wonderful to get tips and travel plans and also to just enjoy as an armchair traveler. Mr. Steves has a great personality - a touch of down home warmth and a touch of no nonsense flair when called for.
I just finished my paper on the French Renaissance, you know I had to mention Villandry! Rick, you're the man!
since, I've learned Bugatti even has their own Chateau and they were given permission to do whatever they will with it. I would love to own a small Chateau one day :D I would understand myself as more of a tenant than an owner of course. Such treasures need to be treated as such!
19:11 Château de Tin Tin.

Amazing!! Thank you!
Rick Steves good job Thank you for taking me places I could not Imagine they existed
the quality of these videos is really good!
Beautiful, thanks for all the good work
My ancestors are originally from Amboise (in fact our family name is the same). Ironically I live in the Napa Valley in California and it looks similar to this area. Not as beautiful, but similar. No wonder I have always loved the Napa Valley so much. I would love to come visit Amboise some day.
Fabulous.
Watching all your videos make me want to spend an entire month in Europe...
imagine if all the beautiful houses, monuments, buildings and that throughout the world had been respected and preserved. chances are we would all live in beautiful houses!
Impossible. The population size was much smaller then, most buildings would not suffice
If Rick is without a tour guide, that means he himself is a qualified tour guide
Wonderful show, very informative introduction to the area. Thank you.
Stunning chateaux. Hoping to visit someday.
Thanks for sharing.
Enjoyed my my trips to Lorre valleys and enjoyed staying in several chateau trips at the time that the new wines 197/8s then in 2000 happy days with a friend Anne.
Perfect life Steves!
Beautiful!
Royalty revisited... brilliant
Interesting so much Italian influence in French culture !
All european countries were influencedd by. eachother in music, littérature, sculpture, architecture, painting !this is what makes Europe's culture thé most magnificiant culture in the World !
Nevertheless, the French stamped those influences with their own unique twist and interpretation. THe French were more tempered, measured and restrained. One can easily see this in their handling of Renaissance influences and Baroque. By the way, the Duomo in Milan is a Gothic Cathedral, which is a French importation, not Italian. But even this Cathedral was given Italian accents.
Another great video by Rick Steves!
During WWII, Chenonceau also was used to smuggle people over to Free France. I believe by simply crossing out to the back of the chateau, people would then safely arrive within Free France.
Wonderful!
This is amazing.
