Rick Steves' Europe Travel Guide © 2008 | The Dordogne River Valley - with its dramatic castles, evocative cave paintings, and prized cuisine - is an unforgettable blend of man-made and natural beauty. We'll take an idyllic canoe ride, and then visit a goose farm and savor the foie gras. We'll also wander through a lamp-lit castle, enjoy a country market, and visit the Sistine Chapel of the prehistoric world. Then we head south to Albi, home of Toulouse-Lautrec, and the imposing fortress city of Carcassonne. #ricksteves #ricksteveseurope #dordogne

    • Yes, it's inhumane all right. Human beings shouldn't lower themselves to cause suffering to fellow creatures on farms and I find it disappointing that pâté de foie gras can be mentioned in passing in a frivolous way that seems to quite approve of it.

Geese do stock up for their trip yes, but not to this point. Their livers get a tiny bit bigger but they for sure don't look like the ones you can buy on markets. I'm proud of my region but not of geese foie gras.

  • Not sure the farmer’s reasoning that force feeding is somehow the same as natural energy stocking really makes sense, or justifies the practice...... otherwise they wouldn’t need to force feed the geese. And because the geese don’t fly, they don’t ever work off the fat. I can’t imagine that doesn’t lead to some kind of health issue and discomfort. Finally, I appreciate that she seems to provide a relatively pleasant life for her geese (aside from the force feeding and eventual slaughter, of course), but I’m sure there are also froie gras farmers who are less ethical and less concerned with with their geese’s comfort...... I’ve seen videos of geese too fat to stand up and were basically confined to their pen... sometimes getting attacked by rats, without being able to even turn around to defend themselves. No siree, NO foie gras for me, thank you very much.
