  • I remember visiting my brother in East Berlin. Many of the East Germans wanted the wall back up. They didnt have to work as hard. It was their right to work but most places didnt have enough supplies to work all week so after cleaning up they would play games or knit and get paid for it until it was time to go home. Lol.

He gave us critical help when we made cannabis legal. He has started to explore Eastern Europe, but won't be writing or talking about it for a few more years.

  • Rick, that "young American soldier" depicted on the large photograph at Checkpoint Charlie is Sergeant Jeff Harper, a tubist with the 298th Army Band. Jeff went on to complete a full career in the Army and served in the Gulf War and in later deployments to Afghanistan. The 298th Army Band was sent to Berlin to support the Potsdam Conference and arrived in Berlin on 8 July 1945 and remained until its deactivation in September 1994.

  • When we shopped in East Berlin when the wall was up it was so different. The stores were not stocked well. The clerks were rude because us tourists were spending more money than they made in a year. The Stazi followed us around saying it was for our safety. Nobody jay walked except tourists. I loved the ampelman on the walking lights. I remember we went to the bathroom and left money for the bathroom cleaner. She almost cried because we left enough for her to buy her family presents and it was only a few dollars. We tried to leave more but Major Grieshabor pushed us out the door before we offended the lady. So many memories.

  • When I visited Berlin I thought it to be excellent. A city that rises from the ashes, like Berlin did, has got my respect. One thing I like about the German mentality is the ability to make an epic project a success! Like the HauptBahnHof , the reunification of east and west, the autobahn etc. I sincerely hope for the future that war will never come to this capitol again.

    • We never stopped doing these things. Not everyone bought into the media and government narrative. How ironic it is learning about the communist and fascist history of a city, and then seeing people behave like they did beginning in 2020... and not seeing the connection. The attempt to separate people, muzzle them, silence their individual thoughts and opinions, pitting people against each other and proclaiming an atmosphere of constant fear... and ostracizing portions of the population that didn't go along...that's how tyranny works.

I think to add to it being the first place I visited with friends and no family in 2016 when I was in college, to it being where I went on my first solo trip in March of 2019, it would be fitting to make this my first post-covid destination to try out the new normal - I cannot express how badly I yearn to live here for sometime.
