Finishing up the playable characters in Don't Starve Reign of Giants that we didn't cover in Part 1, in this episode we'll cover Wagstaff, Woodie, Wigfrid, Webber, Wes, and Maxwell. As with last time, covered topics include lore and backstory, characteristics, gameplay mechanics, and where applicable, differences between a character's single player versus Don't Starve Together version.
Do note that the section on Maxwell DOES have some adventure mode spoilers, so if you don't want to see anything you don't want to see, skip to the section that talks about his playstyle, per the bookmarks below.

Wes is actually really powerful, no joke. Ghosts can do a lot of things in DST and Wes is the perfect character to sacrifice.

Those darned tentacles really can be tricky! Another option is to just hang out in a warzone and let the merms and spiders kill them for you. Eventually you'll have those spots!!
Thank you so much Salendrak! I've always had an itch to play Don't Starve RoG but i could never be able to because all of the guides online are overly complicated, boring, and outright confusing. But thanks to you, i've been able to (kinda lol) begin learning the game! So far, i haven't gone past spring, however, with the way you're doing these videos, i wouldn't be surprised if I managed to survive an entire year! Great Guide as always :) So I take the freedom to collect all ideas for a 20k special I heard so far/ thought of myself in writing: o Ideas for a DS related special: - Connected World (all DLCs/ world hopping) - DST community play (but with a variety of characters to make it more interessting [no double characters]) - Wes Vegan Run - mendling with the settings (for e.g. giants on lots, ressources on low etc.) - night only - no summer escaping into the caves (so you may only go into the caves during the other 3 seasons) - Webber with no weapons except Spider friends o Ideas for a non DS related special: - try out an entirely new game blind (e.g.) x Oxigen not included x Zelda (a lot of Zeldas can be played emulated on pc) x Pokemon (maybe even a fanmade pokemon) x Ori and the blind forest (beautiful but challanging platformer) x A "moving" game as Let's dance, Ring Fit etc. x I mean there are literally thousand games out there :D - Terraria challange (I don't know Terraria, so I don't know what challanges besides hard mode there are) o Ideas for little game breaks/ intermissions (as you are no computer and your brain needs little breaks too!) - Origami folding :D - Read something (maybe poetry) - Try to pronounce words from a foreign language you don't speak (always a funny classic)
KZhead needs to add a way to bookmark specific comments LOL Though I'm pretty sure just searching your name in studio would find this pretty fast. Thanks for typing it up! At this point I'm really thinking the 20k special will have several parts to it. Vegan Pacifist Wes is pretty high on my list, as would maybe a MORE of everything that can kill you world. Doing a linked world-hopping would likely take too much time to meaningfully fit into a single stream though. Warlord Webber also sounds fun! For blind plays, I'm leaning towards titles like Hades or Hollow Knight, maybe Dead Cells, Binding of Isaac, etc, but have also heard good things about Ori. Heh - as for Origami folding, when I was little we used to do massive 2-3 day roadtrips to visit our grandparents. 4 little boys and a baby sister in one car. My parents were genius though, and picked up a ream of computer paper and a big origami book. We were entertained that trip!

I love Wendy and Woody... altough I haven't really make Woody work very effectively. The fact that I can't get Glommer drives me kind of nuts :D I know it is not really important, but when I play Don't Starve I kind of need to have all the followers aroud me that I can have. Because knowing that they are out there is a splinter in my mind that I cannot remove ^^ Also enjoyed Wigfrid lately a lot, although it is everytime a struggle for me to survive until I have a base with a crockpot and I usually at the verge of starvation in the first week or so... after that the game becomes awesome :D unless I get overconfident and be like: Sure just let me quickly kill this Varg... Not the biggest fan of Wolfgang though... him casually changing his form mid fight is annoying as hell...
I have a quote for you from the wiki: "Due to his curse, the only way to get an Old Bell with Woodie in the Reign of Giants DLC (without the Console) is to plant a Fleshy Bulb near Glommer's Statue, let the Eyeplants take Glommer's Flower off the statue and kill the Lureplant before it digests it." I haven't tried that myself, but from some quick google searching, it will let you get not only the flower, but Glommer will also stick around. Just be sure to kill the lureplant as a werebeaver as soon as the lureplant eats the flower, otherwise it will get digested. For Wigfrid, just be sure to fight everything that moves! Except butterflies. And if you find a swamp or spider forest, go ahead and stock up on Monster Meat. Wigfrid easily regains any health and sanity lost by eating cooked monster meat just by fighting stuff. Totally agree on Wolfgang though. I can't count the number of times he's changed forms at the worst possible moment, but I guess that just means I'm not that good at managing his hunger lol
@@salendrak Honestly don't see very many benefits that justify playing woodie, especially in singleplayer. Wolfgang changing forms seems annoying too. The only method I can see is keeping a close eye on his hunger during combat. Love your videos, keep em coming
@@DS3Enjoyer I think it mostly depends on personal preference. Some people really like to optimize their gameplay, in which case a sub-par character wouldn't be very fun. Others just like to enjoy the differences each character brings to the table, good or bad, in which case Woodie might be great!

I just found your channel today while looking for DS gameplay, and I love your guides. So thorough, well-researched, and clearly presented. I've been playing this game for over five years, and I've still learned at least four or five new things from you. I hope you plan on doing similar guides for Shipwrecked (my personal fav - I just love the atmosphere!) and Hamlet - I'm subbed just for the possibility!
Welcome aboard! I've been playing these games for quite a while and still learn new stuff all the time. Gotta love games with lots of depth! And yes - I will be starting a guide and likely playthrough series for Shipwrecked in the next couple of months. Hamlet will be after that, but honestly I'm still learning Hamlet myself, having never played it until earlier this year!

DS has been on my radar since 2013 but I never got around to playing it (I have 800 hours in oxygen not included so am no stranger to Klei!) I got DS in the yogscast charity bundle and finally got around to playing. The problem is that 90% of the guides on youtube are for DST and don't really apply, I'm actually playing DS not ROG but your guides are still great, thanks!
Welcome to the Constant! I've always been partial to the single player version of the game, hence the reason my guides focus on it. Definitely move on to RoG once you're comfortable surviving a full year in vanilla, as it adds a lot more fun to the experience!

I'm a big fan of Maxwell too!! Yeah, his health is really low so you gotta be careful, but not having to worry about sanity even in the caves sure is nice!!

Honestly, if you have the time, I highly recommend taking ALL the characters out for at least a test-drive of a season or three. That really is the best way to get to know them, and who knows? One of them might just really click with you!!
I really like this series and it helps my gameplay a lot. Can you make a cave guide episode, I believe it will help a lot

dont use wigfrid to learn the game, or if you do dont just tank learn to kite its a really important skill to learn.
Totally agree! Though if for some reason you aren't very good at kiting, Wigfrid will be more forgiving for kiting mistakes. Just be sure to keep a close eye on your armor, and keep a backup on hand just in case!!
Would there ever be a part 3 and 4 with the DLC characters? And even maybe the DST characters as a short part 5 or something And my favorite characters are Wilbur who I believe is voiced by a calliope and my other two favorites are Wilba and Wortox
Yup!! I'll cover the additional characters in the context of those DLCs and DST. Not sure when, but someday it'll happen!

Yup - still going, and Caves / Ruins guide will be coming soon! I had hoped to get it out a couple of months ago, but summer ended up being really busy with kids home all the time, and making edited videos just didn't work out. But now that they're back in school, guides are on the way!

They’re always comprehensive yet to the point and never fail to actually teach the core mechanics of the topic. wendy is my go-to character cause of her sister abegail..... it's just abegail can sometimes be too aggresive which always ended her to die.... again......but aside from that, she sure know how to farm spiders
Right?! I find that whenever I play as Wendy I spend most of my time yelling for Abigail to leave something alone, which she doesn't, and then gets killed again. All part of the experience!! LOL
Webber is the main reason I became interested in the game, and is the only character I ever want to play. No idea if he's good or not, but he's my boi either way. ...Shame about the voice, though. Wonder if it can be modded to something different.
Oh, I'm sure there's probably a mod out there to change the voice. Personally, I think it rather suits him!!

Yep!! The RoG guide series only has 2 or 3 more episodes planned, and after that I'll start doing Shipwrecked guides, maybe dip my toes into DST, and eventually will cover Hamlet as well!

Hey could you explain in a video best places to build?
I think I talk about base location in one of the earlier videos (probably the first one I think), but honestly a lot of it comes down to personal preference. There are certainly pros and cons for each biome, but I generally prefer to base in a nice green grassy area (I like the ambient sounds there best) that is in a nice central location in the world so I don't have to run too far to get anywhere. The desert is also a good option so you have easy access to the sanity and health boosting cacti, as well as tumble weeds for year-round cut grass and twigs. It's often in a more remote corner of most worlds though, so unless it has a good wormhole in it, the desert can be a bit out of the way. But feel free to experiment, and see what you like best!
Cool got the game yesterday not really good at kiting. Survived for six days before getting killed by hounds. First base was in the Savannah.

Ahhhh a guide on Bacon errrr uhhhh pigs? Yeah, that would probably be fun to do at some point! As for best beginner character - probably Wilson! I would say get comfortable surviving a full year or so with Wilson, and then start experimenting with other characters. Each will teach you something a little bit different about the game, and they all can be fun to play!

Webber is actually super easy - just kill spiders until they randomly drop the skull, then bury it in any grave you've dug open! I'll be doing an adventure mode guide in the next month or two though that will cover unlocking Wes and Maxwell though, so stay tuned!

Nope! He's only available on platforms that also have the Hamlet DLC, which mobile does NOT have, unfortunately.

Can someone tell how many trees woodie must chop down to trigger the curse + how did you see weremeater as woodie?
The weremeter is from the Combined Status mod. I honestly don't remember if you can see that or any other indication of how close you are to transforming if you don't have that mod, but my guess is probably not. As for how many trees, it's really not a number of trees per se. Rather, as you chop trees, the weremeter fills up. But as you don't chop trees, it goes back down gradually over time. I suppose if you lined up a bunch of full-grown trees right next to each other and did nothing but move as fast as possible from tree to tree, only chopping and not picking anything up, you could figure out how many trees it would take, but in real gameplay you'll probably never see that happen.

I like the added challenge and changed up rules of adventure mode, and totally worth it to unlock Maxwell and for the experience of doing it successfully. To make it easier on yourself, pick WX-78!

Actually, he is, so long as the platform you're playing on has the Hamlet DLC available. So at this point he should be on all modern gen consoles, but isn't on Pocket. Though I honestly can't remember if you need to own Hamlet to be able to use him in Reign of Giants, though I'm pretty sure you don't. Correct me if I'm wrong!
