Winter Guide Part 2 - Gameplay (Don't Starve RoG Beginner's Guide Series)

Time for the gameplay aspects of surviving Winter, including preparation, survival, hunting Walruses, and being ready to take down the Deerclops. This is the 6th Episode of my Don't Stave - Reign of Giants Beginner's Guide Series, a tutorial aimed at new players who are struggling to survive or coming back after a long hiatus.
As with all guides in the series, the focus is on the single player Reign of Giants DLC, but much of what is covered here will also apply to the multiplayer Don't Starve Together, with the notable exception that mobs in DST have more health (MacTusk takes 3 blowdarts to kill, for example) and bosses like Deerclops have MUCH more health (4000 HP in DST vs 2000 in DS).
And don't worry, I've fully recovered from my in-person run-in with Deerclops while recently camping ;-)

    • Much appreciated! I'm really not sure why so much more content is made for DST. Don't get me wrong, it's a great game, and certainly has a lot of potential content for video creation, particularly with its regular updates. I just remember way back when I started playing single player Don't Starve and there really weren't any good guides on it, which seems to be rather the case still today. Hence the reason I started this guide series myself! It's a rough job - but SOMEBODY's got to do it!! 😆

  • Thanks for the great content! I've been watching your video guides and recently, I finally made it past my first winter and killed Deerclops! Love your vids man! Update for Salendrak: I really don't know how, but I managed to get past spring on my first try, and right now i'm on day 61. Sadly I did not make any attempt to kill Moose Goose, mainly because I didn't know how, but if there's one thing for certain, i'm pretty much dead as of now since I spent most of spring nearly dying and not preparing for Summer. If I beyond all known laws of the universe survive for longer, i'll be sure to update you on it. (I'll also update you if I die) Update 2: Not really a surprise, but i died on day 67. I tried to hunt a koalaphant without realising my thermal stone wasnt cooled, so i chased him down found him, and started to overheat, panicking, i decided i would set up camp since it was about to be night and hop from tree to tree till i was at my base. The only thing i didnt account for was that i hadnt seen hounds in a while. And they wanted to visit. So ye i was already on low health and i couldnt stray very far from the tree so i ended up dying to like 7 hounds at once. Next time ill be more prepared though

  • Just survived my first winter EVER!! (I started playing forever ago, but stopped before SW came out, and only picked it back up about a month ago.) Winter is almost always what kills me, but having WX fully kitted out with 400hp before winter even started was CLUTCH. I'm 96% sure that Deerclops totally spawned in. There were some weird warnings, but I never found him, and he never showed up to destroy anything near me, so... I did later find a herd of dead Volt Goats sorta nearby, so maybe that was him. 🤷‍♀️ It was super touch and go at the end, but some double thermal stones saved the day, and now I get to deal with a lil wet robot! 😊

  • Here's a couple of fun facts about Deerclops, just as a thank you for all of these guides and for your Discord server and streams: First, Deerclops is canonically female, though only Wurt (being a native of The Constant) seems aware of this fact. This doesn't impact anything from a gameplay standpoint. It's just an interesting factoid regarding the comments the Survivors make about her. And the second thing actually DOES factor into gameplay, and was even obliquely referenced in this video: Deerclops is nearsighted. This is legitimately the reason she often won't attack you directly; she's myopic and literally might not even see you. Thank goodness Wagstaff never decided to make goggles for her. Hope this was a fun little bit of trivia for you. Hope you've had a wonderful holiday! Stay safe, stay warm, and don't starve!

  • I just started playing this week, I made it past day 34 then I died. The problem was that my winter hat broke Idk why, and I didn’t know about player temperature and because I didn’t spend too much time near the fire pit all my trips for resources couldn’t last more than 10 seconds, this left me with very few resources for spring. I was lucky the deerclops didn’t spawn. Thank you, my games are lasting longer and hopefully I will make it past my first year soon. P.D. I play on iPad but tomorrow I’ll switch to PC, and I play with Willow.

    • I've played on my phone a bit, and VASTLY prefer to play the game on a PC. Controls are better, you don't have "paused" interruptions every time you move something in your inventory, combat is WAY easier, and it's a whole lot less buggy! Great job getting through your first winter though! Most worn clothing items degrade over time as they are worn, so keep an eye on the remaining % durability, and either craft a replacement ahead of time or top it up with a sewing kit before it breaks.

  • I'M MAD. I survived for around 28 days, I started preparing for deerclops at around day 25, I couldn't get a Hambat, so I decided to stock up on Tentacle Spikes, after all, there were plenty due to a swamp nearby with spiders and merms. So I got sanity food, health food, armor, and even a Life Giving Amulet, but the STUPIDEST thing happened. While I was looking for Tentacle Spikes, I saw a bunch of spider glands, I wanted them for healing during the fight, but turns out there was a Tentacle just WAITING for me, so as soon as I went to grab the glands, I got destroyed by the Tentacle.
