Winter Guide Part 1 - Mechanics (Don't Starve RoG Beginner's Guide Series)

2024 ж. 28 Сәу.

Episode 5 of this Don't Starve - Reign of Giants Beginner's Guide Series is all about the mechanics of Winter, and covers temperate, freezing, insulation from winter clothing, and thermal stones. Ever wonder exactly how long you can stay in the cold with different clothing options on? Do you tend to drop a frozen thermal stone thinking it will make you colder faster? Well, stick around - as we'll address all these issues and more!
As with all guides in this series, this episode is focused on the Reign of Giants DLC for Don't Starve. In general these concepts will also apply to the multiplayer Don't Starve Together, but some of the specific mechanics function a little bit differently in that version. So don't expect things to translate over exactly as they work here.

  • I think thermal stones are actually a radioactive type of stone or mineral... so when you place them in the backpack together, you are creating a chain nuclear reaction and that's why you get so hot xD

    • @@salendrak That’s definitely a fair concern. The 18-23 minute window seems both short enough for a single-sitting view but long enough for some actual content. Some DS content creators either cram too much material into 5 minutes so that it’s incomprehensible or go on for an hour and say very little. • Awwww - you're too kind! Thanks!! I do plan on doing an adventure mode guide in the not too distant future, but it probably won't be until sometime in November or maybe December, but I'm not really sure. The biggest tips I can give though is make sure you're comfortable surviving in Winter and Spring. If you're confident in those seasons, Adventure mode won't be too bad. The other tip is to feel free to BURN ALL THE THINGS!! Especially if needed to stay warm in chapters like King of Winter. Since you won't be staying in any given chapter any longer than is absolutely necessary, you don't need to worry about preserving any resources in the world. So burn baby burn!

  • OH HEY - I just had an idea about thermal stones! If I've understood everything you said correctly, then they should be really useful to prevent cooling due to wetness, in spring but especially in Shipwrecked. Because you're not going to be wearing insulation (maybe a raincoat) and the ambient temperature is not actually that low, it's the wetness factor that chills you, so the stone itself should stay warm for longer. Any thoughts on that? I admit that freezing isn't the highest risk of wandering around soaked to the skin, but it can happen, and lighting fires esp. in SW weather can be really difficult. Ideally of course you just shouldn't be getting that wet but you know what this game is like!

    @Fledhyris@Fledhyris2 жыл бұрын
    • Yup - wetness basically causes your perceived temperature to be lower than the actual ambient temperature, but a thermal stone does work to raise your temperature in those situations. Good catch!

  • Really quick, I like to sort resources in these categories: Survival Resources. Progression Resources. Food. Survival resources are what I'll have the most of, because they are what I need to survive, for example: Twigs, Logs, Grass, and Flint. Progression Resources are things I need to get better stuff, for example: Rocks, Gold, Charcoal, ect. Food is obviously things I can eat, this usually goes on the far left of my hotbar.

Losing mass in a reaction means gaining energy. A lot of energy, because c means the speed of the light. So, it's the square of the light speed. Absolutely A LOT!

  • I just use thermal stones the whole way through to be honest. Just the fact that, if at any point you have to equip armor or a light, then all the time spent wearing anything else was wasted as your character rapidly cools down to the thermal stone's level anyway. The time you get from that is shorter, at least shorter than if you used a thermal stone to warm up and then equipped gear. But the upside to that is you don't have to actually warm up by the fire, just leave a thermal stone there and come back for it, and that'll warm you. I tend to make two and "hot-swap" when I get back and before I leave for somewhere.

  • I’m stuck with DS Pocket Edition so it’s even harder for a newbie since you can’t use the quality of life mods which really do make a massive difference from what I’ve seen. So I just wanted to say I love survival games & I’ve played quite a few of them over the years. Some were decent when it came to difficulty. Others were so cruel to beginners it hurt the fun. Others were rough but fair. However for whatever reason DS was one of the very few that I tried to play a few different times and I just couldn’t understand it. I mean I got the basics but there was just so much you had to do and their was little room for error that I just never was able to get into the mid game to really enjoy it. I made the season change once , maybe twice but was completely unprepared and died. I tried videos and walkthroughs but it was never clear enough. I decided to give it one last shot & thats when I found this playlist. Your videos were not just through, they were very direct and easy to understand. I’m shocked these were your first videos Way to go.

    • So, thermal stones in DST do work a little bit differently than they do in single player....but I haven't tested it out or researched it. So not sure!! I think they are about as good as 120 insulation though, but they lose durability when they pass certain thresholds of temperature. Not sure if the 2 stones trick works, but that would be easy to test! Just heat two up, put them in a backpack, and keep standing next to a blazing fire. If you start to overheat - it works!!

  • Speaking as a new person to the game, by far the most difficult part of this has been keeping a steady supply of grass during the winter, especially if I haven't been able to scout out any beefalo during the autumn. Any advice for keeping up with the insanely high demand for grass (and to a lesser extent, twigs) during the winter, or does it just come down to toughing it out and hoping for the best?

    @Ryusuta@Ryusuta Жыл бұрын
    • Are you able to get the whole outline of the world mapped out by about day 10 or so? If you do that, you should know the location of a savannah and a few grasslands that should have plenty of grass, and the grasslands and forests usually have plenty of twigs. As you get more experienced in the game you'll start to realize that most of the time problems arise when you didn't do things efficiently in the prior 10 days or so. Put differently, if you're running out of grass and twigs in Winter, chances are you didn't stockpile enough in fall. Regardless, if you do run low during winter, usually the best bet is to take a day or two and go out to where you can get more to last the rest of the season. Keep at it and with time and experience, you'll get more efficient at stuff like that!

    • If you're playing in Reign of Giants, you can rarely get gears from tumbleweeds. Otherwise digging up graves is your next best bet, but it's only like a 3% chance to get gears. Really though you should just go take out some clockworks. If you're not good at fighting them yourself, hire some pigs to help you out! As for deerclops, the wiki says it can despawn if it's been able to destroy enough structures without getting attacked. Or something like that. Otherwise it sticks around until the seasons change or something.

  • I'm confused, am I misunderstanding? Rule 1 "In winter a cold thermal stone will NOT make you colder faster" Rule 2 " At 120 insul a thermal stone will NOT affect the rate at which you get colder" Aren't both rules stating the exact same information? Either way once again a great video and I appreciate your effort/content!

    @Neewom@Neewom5 ай бұрын
    • Not quite the same. The idea of Rule 1 is that if you are warm, you can pick up a super freezing cold thermal stone, and it won't cause you to cool down. Intuitively it would seem like picking up a cold stone would be bad, but it isn't. The idea behind Rule 2 though is that if you have less than 120 insulation, then your character's rate of temperature change with a thermal stone will be based on the thermal stones internal rate of temperature change, which isn't affected by your insulation. But if you have at least 120 insulation, then your rate of temperature change will be slower than the thermal stones, so even though it will cool down faster than you, your rate of change won't be affected by the thermal stone. So yeah - the 2 rules are sort of saying the same thing, but there are some slight nuances. ps - I have no idea if the QoL update from earlier this year changed any of that!

      @Nilon241@Nilon2413 жыл бұрын
    • @@Nilon241 I haven't researched warming rate / thermal stones in summer yet, but I don't think they work exactly the same (or rather, opposite) to how they do in Winter. That said, I did just test it a little bit, and here's what I found: A cold thermal stone plus max insulation (eyebrella and floral shirt in this case) causes you to warm up a little bit slower than just the insulation. In contrast, if you pick up a heated thermal stone, you'll warm up just as fast as if you weren't holding a thermal stone at all. So my preliminary conclusion is that a thermals stone in winter will only help you - it won't cause you to warm up any faster. I haven't tested it at all with other levels of insulation though. But yes - it would seem that carrying a heater thermals stone won't hurt you in the summer.

  • The trick of the 2 thermal stones is not a bug. When you stand near a fire pit, you heat yourself with a thermal stone, you heat yourself faster because the stone warms faster than you and then, by having the thermal stone in your pocket, you will heat faster. The 2 thermal stones in backpack trick is like a little paradox. When you heat, the thermal stone will make you warm faster and it will warm the other stone, which will heat the first stone, heating the second ect...and every time you will be also heated.
