Ready to conquer the most difficult season of all for new players? Tired of having your base go up in flames? Confused by overheating? Ready to take down the Dragonfly like a pro? Watch on in this episode of my Don't Starve - Reign of Giants Beginner's Guide Series on SUMMER!!
Most of the mechanics in this guide apply pretty well to Don't Starve Together, but see a pinned comment below for additional differences, as well as a few other bits I forgot to add in the video. And yes, Willow was indeed punished in this video as retaliation for the pain and suffering she inflicted upon me in my 10-hour "Blind" Hamlet Livestream. I feel better now, thanks for asking :-P

  • ***ADDITIONAL INFO, CLARIFICATIONS, AND CORRECTIONS*** I knew this guide was going to be a bit long, but here are a few more bits I think you should have that didn't get included (or were unintentionally omitted). ***CAVES in Single Player and Don't Starve Together*** The caves are a GREAT place to spend the summer in both Reign of Giants and in Don't Starve Together. In both games, the caves have no smoldering or wildfires during the summer, and in Don't Starve Together, the temperature never gets hot enough to make you overheat! In Reign of Giants, you can still overheat in the caves, but the caves provide an effective insulation (meaning you warm up slower) that is equivalent to you wearing a Tier 3 clothing item such as a Floral Shirt. Combine that with actual insulation clothing and you can go a LOOONNNNGGG time in the caves before needing to cool down. Additionally, the bonus insulation you get from Dusk and Night is also still present! ***DUSK AND NIGHT*** Speaking of Dusk and Night, during the summer the temperatures are generally hottest during the day, a little bit cooler during dusk, and a bit cooler still during night. In the middle of summer dusk and night will still be hot enough to cause wildfires and overheating, but they also provide you with some bonus insulation. During dusk you get an additional 60 heat resistance (the same as a Tier 1 Straw Hat) and during the night, you get an additional 120 heat resistance (the same as a Tier 2 Umbrella). Combine those bonuses with your actual summer clothing, and maybe even skip the day and cool off with a Siesta Lean-to, and it will be even easier to make it though Summer fast! ***SIESTA LEAN-TO*** I forgot to mention in the video that you also get healed for 60 HP when you use the Siesta Lean-to. Also, when hammering (most) items you get half the crafting materials, rounded up, back from the structure. So for the Siesta Lean-to you get 2 boards, 1 silk, and 2 (out of the three used to craft it) rope when you hammer it, regardless of how many times it was used. And if you REALLY want to skip through summer fast, go ahead and use a Tent or Straw Roll to skip the dusk and night - just make sure you have plenty of food to fill your belly! In Don't Starve Together you can't skip time the way you do in single player, but these structures can still be used to provide shelter from the heat and other perks over time as they are used, rather than instantaneously. ***FASHION MELON AND ICE CUBE*** So here's my gripe with the wiki articles for these two items, which is basically a case of providing (I'm assuming) true information that isn't very helpful. Specifically, the wiki article states that the Fashion Melon "provides a cooling effect of 55°" and that the Ice Cube " provides a cooling effect of 40°" but never explains what that information DOES for you in practical terms. In this case, as far as I know, they basically act as a temperature source of 55 and 40 degrees, respectively, with the colder temperature of the Ice Cube being better. I'm not sure how exactly the game determines YOUR temperature when there are multiple temperature sources active, but it basically is a factor of the ambient temperature as well as whatever cooling sources are in effect. Or something like that. Moral of the story, these items just aren't very good, especially on REALLY hot summer days. ***DRAGONFLY DESPAWNING*** If you put the Dragonfly to sleep, one way to gauge how far you have to get away from her to make her despawn is to listen to her snoring sound. Once the sound goes away, she should be despawned. If the dragonfly kills you, she will most likely despawn as well. Assuming of course that your touchstone or meat effigy is sufficiently far away from her. If you die right next to your resurrection point or had a Life Giving Amulet on, she'll still be there! ***DRAGONFLY WITHOUT BARRIERS*** The dragonfly can also be fought without using fires or boulders to block her movement, but it is much harder. Because she moves while doing her swipe attack, it is very hard to dodge the hit unless you have some major speed boosts like an overcharged WX-78 or Coffee from Shipwrecked. So be sure to bring LOTS of extra armor! You can avoid the ground slam attacks though, but will need to be mindful of fire damage. In general, you'll want to go in close and hit her twice while she hits you with the swipe attack, then move away slightly to reset the fire damage, then do two more hits before running away to avoid the ground slam, rinse and repeat. I used this method in my Wagstaff playthrough episode and it is much harder that way. ----- And that's all I can think of for now, though I may add more details if I think of anything. Cheers!!

    • You can do a similar method on Ancient Guardian to get up to 8 hits with mag and club, I believe. Dfly stutter stepping is really fun when you get used to the timing. 2 hit back away 1 hit dodge, if my memory is good

    • @@MakusinMeringue Yup - though in DST the Guardian will break the campfires I believe. I usually either blow him up with 13 gunpowder or take Rock Lobsters down to do the heavy lifting, as well as help out with clockworks and dangling depths dwellers. I generally find DFly without barricades to be much trickier. I always have a hard time maintaining a consistent pattern and end up taking way too much damage!

  • Thank you for making single player tutorials. Many of us just hate DST and its mechanics, especially new crop farming and bunny nerf. That said, I think it is worth mentioning that it makes sense to surround the core of your base with some Lureplant (on hard surface so they spawn no eyes) and protect them with Flingos instead (saves you on Flingo maintenance and coverage). Smoldering priority works reliably in ROG. Dragontails can also be important in single player - you want at least one scale armor if you plan on using yourself as a bait in fire farm against the hounds (or Varg farming in general).

    @JenDen9@JenDen93 жыл бұрын
    • Yeah, I thought about including some information about lureplants luring fire during summer, but overall felt that the video was already getting a bit long and that smoldering manipulation like that was more of an advanced topic. Same with fire farms - that's a pretty niche use that is well beyond just surviving a year in-game. But very excellent points!!

    • I just hate how the giants' stats are ramped up even if you play DST in single player, making them so much harder to handle! I'd enjoy playing it alone but I'm going to have to think about some alternative methods, especially getting the Deerclops eyeball. What have they done to bunnies?

      @Fledhyris@Fledhyris2 жыл бұрын
    • @@Fledhyris Bunnies used to be extremely easy to farm as long as you had one carrot: feed it to a bunnyman, tell him to attack others, he'll get killed and drop a carrot, rinse and reapeat. In DST the bunnymen drops got nerfed, you only have 33% chance of getting a carrot iirc.

  • I got all the way to summer for the first time only to die from overheating 3 times xD Was heading to the caves and forgot to grab the most important thing from my main base (nitre) and then got interrupted by hounds when I was going back for it after being resurrected. I'll definitely prepare better next time! Although the Deerclops nor Moose Goose showed up so I didn't have to fight those to make it to summer. Still haven't taken them down yet, but they haven't spawned since I've gotten more comfortable managing other survival stuff. Your videos have helped a ton, though! Thank you!

    • Sounds like a pretty typical Don't Starve experience!! 😁 Having the giants spawn is actually really nice. The Eyebrella is GREAT for both spring and summer, and the Luxury Fan is great for cooling off and putting out fires when it's hot out. Short of those, your next best bet for emergency cooling off (in addition to endothermic fires when you might want to stay put for a bit) is the chilled amulet. Prior to making this video I honestly hadn't used it that much, but it really does work pretty well!

    • Caves are great in summer because they give yoy something to do - there's always plenty of activity you can be doing (collecting gems and gears and trinkets) while its too hot on the surface. The only problem is that you can accidentally miss Dragonfly since you don't get notification of her spawning when you're in Caves. So you have to make a trip outside at least once a day to check. In single player her spawn timer is not consistent, she might not even spawn at all if you're unlucky.

In Reign of Giants, the seasons go in order of Autumn, Winter, Spring, and then Summer. If you start in Spring, then it goes to Summer next and continues in the usual order. • I did a little bit of testing with that while preparing to make the video, but wasn't able to get consistent results. The general theory is that if you can get the smoldering object to become "unloaded" then it should stop the smoldering from progressing to fire, and stop fire from spreading to other objects. But one of the tests I did was to place a sign right next to a planted lure plant. The lure plant has the highest priority and will always smolder before anything else. As soon as it started smoldering I ran away, and when I came back the next day, the plant was fine, and the sign was burnt! So rather than suggesting running away and playing with fire (hahah - see what I did there) I decided to leave that section out of the video. Best bet - stop a smolder on anything you don't want to burn / spread, and protect whatever you really want to protect with a single flingo 👍

  • I mean this game isn't that difficult to play,I can easily survive for ever. the only thing that makes me quit my world after surviving my first 2 or 3 years is I get bored of playing when I reach the point of which I have done and built every thing possible(even fire farm and krampus farm etc...)

    • Oh I totally hear you - after a year or three I tend to get bored as well. Hence the reason I set out a couple of objectives ahead of time to make sure I stick around to complete all of those. Also, world linking can be a lot of fun too!
