Summertime, and the living is easy
Fish are biting and the cotton is high
Your daddy's rich and your mammy's good looking
So hush, little baby, don't want you cry

    • Since 1969, Nelson has primarily played a Martin N-20 classical guitar with a Baldwin Prismatone pickup. It's as fancy as you'd expect a Martin to be. It isn't very highly decorated, but its top is Sitka spruce, its back and sides are Brazilian rosewood. Nelson met the nylon string Martin guitar in 1969 after a drunk destroyed his last guitar. Nelson bought it sight-unseen and gave it a name. “I named my guitar Trigger because it's kind of my horse,” he explains. “Roy Rogers had a horse called Trigger.” 2:13 [Range of Sounds; Rolling Stone; Stringjoy]

    • The guitar wielded by Willie Nelson, Trigger, is one of the most recognizable and well-known instruments in music history. He purchased the Martin N-20 nylon-string classical acoustic guitar for $750 in 1969. Trigger is currently valued at around $800k-900k dollars. It is assumed that this item was manufactured between 1969 and 1972. 3:13 [FuelRocks]

  • The way he plays the guitar is masterful. It’s very simple, chord wise and note wise, elementary really, but he just drags the guitar, beautifully artistic, total control and pure expression, rich and colourful. His singing is the same. It’s as natural as walking and breathing to him.

    • +AGENTARMES How right you are! And so ironic that you say 80+. Because, when I first heard him was in the 1980's, and I fell in love with him and his music immediately. After waiting decades, I finally had the ultimate pleasure of seeing one of his live shows. I would love to once again have the opportunity to see him live and I would do so in a heartbeat! But, it was such a fantastic experience that, if I suddenly won "Front Row" tickets to one of his concerts (within my heart of hearts), I think I would be compelled to give those tickets away to somebody who has never, or would never, be able to afford to see him otherwise.

I wouldn't even want to guess how many thousands of songs he has played on it. (To anyone fortunate enough to ever see his show, that guitar is part of the thrill! Everyone looks for it! It needs to one day be put in the Smithsonian.) In a way, that guitar sort of helps to tell Willie's story: You don't get that old and beat up without having seen a whole LOT of GOOD times!! (And thrilled a whole lot of people along the way!)

  • The first time this man caught my attention was in the 1980's. I was living in Virginia and would turn on an OLD wooden, 1960's "hand-me-down" radio that sat atop our old refrigerator, and listen to music and weather reports every morning, while I got our son up and ready for school. That is when I discovered Willie Nelson! ("You Were Always on my Mind" and "Angel Falling Too Close to the Ground") They both spoke so deeply to my heart. And, from that point on, I was a devoted fan. I had to wait 30+ YEARS to finally see him live, and when I finally did...I cried throughout his entire performance! If you ever have the opportunity to see him perform, please don't hesitate. You will always be happy and appreciative that you did!
