How Iron Man's VFX Evolved Over 11 Years | Movies Insider

If you look at Iron Man's first suit, the Mark 1, and compare it to the hero's nanotech suit from "Avengers: Infinity War" and "Avengers: Endgame," a lot has changed, but it's not just the technology in the world of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Animation tech has also evolved in the real world to make this suit possible on the big screen. We spoke with some of the VFX artists who worked on Iron Man’s suit over the past 11 years including Industrial Light & Magic, Weta Digital, Cinesite/Trixter, The Embassy, and Framestore to find out what challenges they faced along the way and how they were able to make the suit look so real.

  • As much as I thought his nano tech suit was cool and innovative, the first Iron Man suits are the ones that stick with me the most since they're the most realistic ones.

    • Was it more realistic in its animation, or simply more realistic in its feasibility in our world...hmm i personally think the nano tech suit is as realistic as you could make a nano tech suit, it's just that the possibility of that liquid metal type of material is so far out of our reach, it makes it seem fake when really, from a design and animation standpoint, it's spot on as perfect as it could be :/

    • I had a subscription to Iron Man and Avengers comics in the 80's. Tony Stark's personality in the comics was always a bit flat. RDJ and John Favreau take all of the credit for making Tony Stark a fascinating and likeable character.

      @cajunboy67@cajunboy673 жыл бұрын
    • @@cajunboy67 Sure it's a bit flat but there are times that are interesting about comic Tony Stark such as dealing with alcoholism. So that being said, the comic DID reflected on RDJ's dealing with alcoholism and that's why the Iron Man trilogy mentioned his habit a few times. Also, it was used to be distributed by Paramount, not Disney, which it make sense why the movie was different compare to some several MCU movies which it's full of dirty humor and adult themes. Plus terrorism.

As a kid, I always liked how he carried the suit in his briefcase, because that's where you keep your business items, and being Iron Man was his business. I was surprised, seeing Iron Man 3, where he walks up to the suit and steps into it. Since IM1's MKII suit, all of it is basically CG. If his newer suits ever seemed sloppy in IW and EG, it's probably due to budget cuts from having so many big name actors on the same screen.

    @JL-ps9vn@JL-ps9vn3 жыл бұрын
    • Yeah Thanos got the majority effort, obviously. Pretty much every time he was on the screen, he looked just great. Hulk in Endgame was also quite expressive. However, the rest of the stuff, they did background blurs to prevent anyone from noticing like with Titan in IW. Everything in Titan is purposefully blurred to prevent people from noticing imperfections and also give the artsy background defocus.

  • Having seen the suit in all its iterations throughout this movie series, I gotta say the effects for the first Iron Man film still impress me just that much more because there was a blend of a real practical suit with a fully CGI suit. Because of this your mind could never truly pick up where one is being used and the other is not. It also seems to me that having the practical suit used in the film challenged the digital artists to make their animated version not only match the practical suit but also meld convincingly with the live background that the practical suit was shot in (as opposed to generating a virtual set). Just my thoughts of course.
