In combat sports, there is not universal ‘’best style’’ and every fighter has his or her own strengths and advantages. There is a counterstrategy for every advantage that you or your opponent may possess, and this is what makes it such a great sport.
In this video, we will go through the styles in terms of physical capacity. Generally, there are three different categories of athletes:
1. The somewhat slow and sloppy fighter, but with a gas-tank for days
2. The twitchy, snappy and explosive fighter that is prone to fatigue
3. The in-between fighter with a good balance of both attributes
Athletic attributes such as strength, power and endurance are dependent on many factors. To name a few:
• Aerobic capacity; such as oxygen transportation, utilization of oxygen, and lactate threshold.
• Anaerobic capacity; such as phosphocreatine stores, glycolytic capacity, and buffering capacity.
• Neuromuscular factors; such as motor unit recruitment, rate-coding, motor control, and utilization of elastic energy.
• Psychological factors; such as courage, confidence, motivation, and resilience.
• Anatomy; bodily proportions, leverage…
Trying to make sense out of all of these and their relative contribution is next to impossible.
There is however one very detrimental (although not a sole) factor that determines your type of athleticism to a very significant extent, namely your muscle fiber type distribution, which will be the topic of this video.

  • This stuff is very interesting but not as straight forward as I thought. Me and my brother did DNA tests so we know our muscle fibre genetics and while it makes sense for me, I got CT (mix between slow and fast twitch), and I definitely feel like a complete generalist in terms of athletic abilities, my brother actually got TT (slow twitch dominant), yet he is way more muscular than I and actually has shit endurance but tremendous strength. Especially weird since were half Nigerian where the TT gene is comparatively absent. So yea, a lot of factors involved.

    • Muscle composition isn't everything. If he prioritises strength a lot more than you do whereas you prioritise endurance then ofc it's going to work out that way.

  • As you were explaining the 2a advantages I realised it was a list of why I think I'm talented at mma. Did well in most sports but never won anything til I tried fighting. Always look at opponents and think overwhelm them with power or volume? Btw, speaks volumes when you said take all this with a pinch of salt 👍

  • I feel like I’m a mix, I have solid aerobic endurance, more limited anaerobic endurance, a lot of power and musculature, not greatly fast but with a ton of power and a lot of explosiveness in specific movements. I feel like my anaerobic base is too low for the second type, my power is too great to be the first type, and my speed is too low and anaerobic base is too high to be the last type….

  • Dream scenario: update this video and give 3 examples of boxers in each category, who are the practioners of the Sweet Science and the Noble Art. Because MMA fighters are NOT at the top of the combat sport's food chain. Look it up: of ALL SPORTS, BOXING 🥊 is the MOST DEMANDING in ALL CATEGORIES. ✌️ Think "Iron" Mike Tyson! 👊 🔥 🔥
