Last Fan to Speak to Kobe? (1/25/2020 Night Before Kobe's Death)

I might have been the last fan to speak to Kobe before he died.
And I filmed it. You can see it in the video above.
Here’s how it happened
Because my man Gary Vee says "document don’t create," I'm in the habit of filming everyday stuff. This particular day, January 25th, 2020, I was in a food court here in Newport Beach, with my family.
The reason I was documenting was because it happened that while we were getting dinner, my friend and LinkedIn influencer Brian Golod had a post that was going viral, and we were studying it and texting back and forth to understand why it was going crazy.
So I’m sitting here with the family and decided to start to film the scene because I was thinking of documenting the viral post and what I was learning about it.
Suddenly, I noticed a very tall person coming down the escalator in front of me.
It took me a moment, but I suddenly realized it was Kobe.
This is what you’re going to see in the video above.
So as I’m sitting there, I feel a kick - "go talk to him."
“I’m gonna kick myself for the rest of my life if I don’t talk to him,” I said to my wife as I headed his way.
My daughter ran after me.
"Dad, who is this?"
"The greatest basketball player of our time. No one like him," I told her.
We found him sitting with his daughter.
Completely, totally focused on her as she giggled over ice cream.
Like there was no one else around. Just daddy & his little girl.
“Hey Kobe, you’re amazing. I want you to know that. Thank you for all you’ve done,” I said.
Looking at me, he smiled. Extended his billion-dollar hand.
“Hey, thanks, man. I appreciate that!” he said. I could feel the calluses on his hand.
I turned to his daughter & touched her shoulder lightly. “Having a nice time with dad?”
She giggled & kept slurping.
“All right Kobe, have a wonderful evening,” I said.
“You too man!”
And that was it.
Excitedly, I texted friends, "Just saw Kobe!"
The next day was tragic, for Kobe and all the families involved.
AND I WAS SHOCKED. I COULD STILL FEEL HIS HAND. Still in shock from seeing him and then on top of that hearing that died was just too much.
Was I the last fan to speak to Kobe? I don’t know for sure. But I’ll never forget that encounter and I hope it encourages you to hug a loved one and never forget that life is short. God bless!

  • Super cool you got this of course, but out with your family having dinner, family time, and spending it buried in your phone? Thats a time your supposed to put your phone away, engage with your family, talk... etc.. see it so much nowadays, look around, families sitting in restaurants, all of them buried in their devices, no conversation, no engaging with each other. Yeah, its off topic from this video, but you can take different things from stuff like this. There is the obvious of course, but also, other things. Also, why are you touching someone elses kid, that you dont know. Cause its Kobe? And last fan? Probably not.. a quick internet search will turn up stories , pictures etc.. of people who ran into him.. a couple from running into him at the airport the next morning. There was a tweet, which has since been deleted, but you can still find it, of someone who took a pic with him as he arrived at the airport. People, especially with your family...put your phone down. You may not know it, but your kids are always watching you, etc..

    • @@HulkVahkiin Thanks for your well thought out, ignorant reply First off, pretentious.... No Its called an OPINION numbnuts. And as such... take it as that. And write "that much" ? What, do you have the attention span of a 12 year old? Wasnt that long. Are you still with me? Or am I writing too much again? But if you are.... Minor? Look around everywhere nowadays, families out to dinner, everyone on their phone. And here, same, but this guy tries to justify it. Again, just my opinion. I better stop now, before it gets too long and the back of your head pops off.

    • @@moemiles2646 Again, its an OPINION, to you, no big deal, thats your opinion, Im good with that. For me, just another example, of the way families are nowadays.. everyone buried in their phone no conversation etc. Yeah, this is an extreme example, but it is what it is.. Just my opinion. So chill Karen. People, put your phones down for 30 minutes whilst your with family or friends..

      @chuckfan1@chuckfan1 Жыл бұрын
    • Your comment is completely pretentious. Who are you to have such a strong criticism, judgment, or opinion on others who like to vlog their time with their families? Until the point, you need to write an essay about it? Ironically the time you took to write it - you could have done something better with *your* family like giving your spouse or child a loving kiss/hug, I'm sure they would have appreciated it instead of you taking the time to criticize RANDOM people on how they live their lives, and here you are complaining people are stuck to their electronics, what a joke. A small tap on the shoulder towards a kid is that disturbing to you? Seriously, people like you who project hard on something almost irrelevant - you even admit your comment is off-topic - towards other people are the ones who are socially problematic not the one who likes to document stuff on video. We all can have our opinions on anything but don't hide behind that luxury to project hard with platitudes. You are not a better example and doing *any better* if you are going to spend time writing essays on your phone/computer on KZhead comment sections on how people go about their business. Practice what you preach, hypocrite.

Just think, if you didn’t go talk to him, he might have been in a different mind state, he might have told the pilot to not risk it… damn dude, that’s heavy…. RIP Kobe bean… I need time to digest this new information… why did you have to talk to him dog? Why….

  • This was also the night LeBron passed him as #3 in the all-time most NBA career points. But even more eerily, it was in a game against Kobe’s hometown of Philadelphia. If you had told anyone Kobe would have a sex change operation the next morning, it would have seemed more likely than what happened. The pilot had 48 times more flight hours than JFK Jr and was 100% sober and slept 9 hours the previous night. So unlike JFK Jr, he was certified to go from VFR to IMC. But the fog turned out to be just too dense and the rest is history.
