"Bruce Lee: The Lost Interview" (originally titled as "The Mandarin Superstar") is the name given to the 9 December 1971 edition of The Pierre Berton Show, which featured actor Bruce Lee in his only English speaking television interview (with English subtitles). Its title is derived from its status; it was presumed lost for several years until its rediscovery and airing on 2 November 1994. Over the course of the interview, which was filmed in Hong Kong, Bruce Lee and Pierre Berton discuss Lee's career, various aspects of martial arts philosophy and the inherent problems faced by an Asian in pursuing stardom in Hollywood. A review of the interview by Bill Stockey said that Bruce Lee's "human side is exposed and he is portrayed as more approachable".
This interview also exposes Bruce Lee's most famous quote about "Be Like Water" or "Be Water My Friend" to be one of the most sensational and philosophical quotes of all time and has been used or incorporated in endless counts of videos and even memes.

🔎 ABOUT BRUCE LEE
Bruce Lee (Chinese: 李小龍; born Lee Jun-fan, 李振藩; November 27, 1940 - July 20, 1973) was a Chinese-American martial artist and actor whose career spanned Hong Kong and the United States. He was the founder of Jeet Kune Do, a hybrid martial arts philosophy drawing from different combat disciplines that is often credited with paving the way for modern mixed martial arts (MMA). Lee is considered by critics, media, and other martial artists to be the most influential martial artist of all time and a pop culture icon of the 20th century, who bridged the gap between East and West. He is credited with promoting Hong Kong action cinema and helping to change the way Chinese people were presented in American films. Bruce Lee died on July 20, 1973, aged 32. Since his death, Lee has continued to be a prominent influence on modern combat sports, including judo, karate, mixed martial arts, and boxing, as well as modern popular culture, including film, television, comics, animation, and video games. Time named Lee one of the 100 most important people of the 20th century.

    • I think it is called screen projection (your sense of being is projected outside the glass, into the viewers heart and mind), and he was a big turn away for Hollywood industry from that time, modern actors do this or try to do this everytime, it is a fashioned way of portrait ING your characters today, and likewise in many other domains, Bruce Lee was a revolutionary man, a pinpoint for a beginning of a new era in those particular domains. He was the greatest pop cultural influencer (parodoxal, after his death) of America, on all times or at least last 100 years, as they themselves say.

The philosophy is the most important part of his teachings. I learned from a student of one of his students. Learning the psychological part of the forms of jeet kune do is smart for everyone to do. The physical parts are even used in modern military combat training. It's called "federation jeet kune do" which I believe they used to teach to green berets.

  • Bruce Lee was so much more than a film star and martial artist. I'm now reading his book, "Striking Thoughts." Parts of it are simple and straightforward. Other parts are complex. That said, he was many things. I'm processing his art both on screen and on paper. There's no person like him. An original. I wish he were here with us. But he is in spirit and always will be.

His tonality , his attempts to poke fun , cutting off when things were being explained because he didn't care and only wanted to stick to the questions he had for him. He treated Mr Lee horribly, should have been interviewed by someone who liked him

Racial discrimination, the interviewer is elder , overconfident, seems not interested, took it lite to interview such a younger movie star. However bruce lee did not take it mind and expressed humbly as he is such a cool answering

    • It was 1971... information about racism and hate weren't so learnable back then. But then again even in 2023 racism and hate are still pretty much rampant so it is difficult to change people mindset in general. All I could say is Bruce Lee was so cool-headed and humble at the age of only 31. This comes over and above the fact that he learned philosophy and practiced martial arts. How many of us (in the world) these days can think and talk like him... So humble, nice and knowledgeable. And last but not least, so well-admired and likeable even in 2023!! ❤️❤️

Otherwise if it's about martial arts motion then he was referring to the expression of oneself using martial arts as a catalyst. Sorry if I didn't explain too well, let me know if that helps! 😉

    • @user-fr4lz4sr5q I remember that show. It reconciles with the words he said in this video too - regarding being less mechanical about the body expressions. The boy's first kick was without objective, and second one was developed through anger. Third one was better because there was better control (emotionally) - in short, he finally knew what he was doing and let his feelings flow through his actions, not the other way round. I hope this explanation is a-OK, I don't have the same level of wisdom as Bruce Lee but I hope I interpreted his "emotional content" fairly and squarely. ☺️

He's the type to do things his way or the highway. This is why I don't have an issue with Quentin Tarantino portraying Lee as a cocky (in a good way) person who met a tough challenge.
