If anything is a 100% lock at the Oscars this year, it's Dune for sound.
One of the few times I've heard CASUAL audiences of a film starting conversations about its sound design. That's how powerful it was
Definitely. The sounds during the attack on Arrakeen are pure ASMR.
@@danielplainview2584 Both the soundtrack and the ambient sound in Dune actually use "ASMR" and very low/high frequency sounds its really impressive stuff !
Oh pretty much a 100% chance it will take pretty much every "technical" award : VFX, Sound Design , Score , Costume design , Set design , Production design , Hair and makeup and it will probably be nominated in everything else except acting because science fiction.
Y’all people gotta chill with the oscars Even the greatest actors don’t even have oscars
I feel bad for anyone who couldn't see this movie in IMAX. I felt Dune's sound design in my BONES
And you are so lucky in my place there is no IMAX theater no way near🤒
Well its coming back to IMAX so I'm sure it'll be a first for some.
@@oAPXo will it digitally release in IMAX format
Just saw it yesterday in theaters we were the only ones there great movie. Grueling pace in the beginning
lets goo to the booones
I just want to take a minute to appreciate the fact that Hollywood actually made an adaptation of a book with a director that cared deeply about the source material and got Zimmer to bring that vision to life. What a wonderful gift we were given.
Best sound on a movie I’ve ever watched - it brought the world of Dune to life.
It better get the oscar
I'd agree except maybe Mad Max Fury Road.
I agree that DUNE has a great soundtrack, but INTERSTELLAR's soundtrack is probably the best soundtrack ever!
also they r did Blade Runner
Dune and Blade Runner 2049 👏
I cant believe they didn't have a segment about the Sardukar chant, id watch half hour about that part alone, the best battle cry or sci-fi noise of any film ever made
It's Mongolian throat signing if I'm not mistaken
I think Hans Zimmer worked on that not the sound team
@@akshaydalvi1534 Yep
@@mawortz They based it off Mongolian throat singing but made a few changes to create a unique sound.
@@akshaydalvi1534 Can confirm. Was part of the 'score' rather than the post sound work.
This movie is a masterpiece. You can see the absolute infinitesimal detail they go into and having the post production right in from the beginning. Brilliant work.
It'll be a masterpiece when they finish it. Dune 2021 is hardly a full movie.
@@murrygondwana7260 Even if it is incomplete, this is one of the most immersive movies i've ever seen in my life and not only that, it truly felt like a spiritual experience, like i felt changed once it was over
I went to the best university in the world, Royal College of Music, London....and we would work with the National School Of TV and they would teach the directors that if you need music then your film is weak....so to see such a genius as Dennis Villeneuve championing sound is the best feeling ever
This is extremely interesting. I'm pretty sure tons of people have been listening to this music since it came out, and it's great to know how it was made :)
This isn’t about the music but rather the sound design and mixing on Dune and the team behind the soundtrack for the film. If interested in the music, check out some of the videos with Denis and Hans Zimmer. They’re great and pretty informative :)
@@mattm5672 link?
@@mattm5672 Well, in this film the music and sound design are heavily interlinked. In the section of Paul's first encounter with spice, for example, the music and sound design are indistinguishable, and that's true for a lot of the film
@@isaacdalziel5772 Oh yeah definitely. And the composer and sound designers purposefully had a lot of crossover. But I think it's also important to recognize each teams respective contributions to the film.
Did you watch the Vid? It's about sound design and to a smaller extent mixing. There will likely be another focusing on the score.
This team should win Oscar for sound
They will, 100%
🎉🎉🎉
They did!
Gotta love the reference to Lee 'Scratch' Perry and his mastery of Dub.
Woah! Scott Manley is in the house. It's pretty delightful when some of my favorite things crossover!
NGL I cried when I saw that ending on opening day. Just that masterpiece score sent shivers down my spine.
I legit get goosebumps every time i hear sounds from this movie
The soundtrack is absolute masterpiece. It's fits to the story so well! I've been transferred to the world of Dune the moment the movie started.
I do not think it is a masterpiece but it really suits the movie and adds to the atmosphere.
@@bighands69 i can confidently say it will be one of the best fantasy/sci-fi/space opera trilogies out there
Spectacular. This doc could have been twice as long and we'd watch it all.
fr
This was my first time I watched a documentary about designing sounds for a movie. I really like Denis idea that the sound should not be the last thing at the end of making a movie and instead should be a first class citizen! Sound can convey so many different emotions and feelings and thus its as important as everything else. Its really great that there was time for the team to experiment and design something new and at the same time relatable. I did't know the thought process behind sound can be so interesting! thanx so much!
there are documentaries about how the sound was designed for the lord of the rings trilogy. those might blow your mind too :)
@@zdenagincaiova777 thanks! I’ll have a look at them too then)
You should read about Ben Burtt, he's one of the greats.
I've worked on and been around some local films in my area and one thing I heard a sound mix engineer say that stuck with me is that sound can make or break a movie, even if its visuals are gorgeous. I've seen a bunch of local short films at festivals and there's been a few with killer visuals, costumes, acting, etc. but pretty badly mixed and lazily edited sound design, and it honestly ruined the immersion because the dialogue was hard to hear and the sounds were cheesy.
Knowing Dune and having read the books multiple times from age 15 and also believing firmly that perfection is an illusion...This adaptation is the best an adaptation can ever be....Excellence all around....It couldn't have been better especially when u consider how dense and complex the books are
Actors play their part but to have a crew like this. The back bone, the FOUNDATION of making it believable is priceless. Thank you so much and I wish you more great projects now moving forward.
I loved the combination of invented languages, music, sign languages, chants . . . I could watch this movie a million times and still get more each time. Masterpiece!
Denis' sound team is an actual dream team. Blade Runner and Dune have the best sound of any movie/game/show I've ever heard.
It blows my mind that sound design isn't conventionally an early part of the pre-production process in film. Concept art informs the look and feel of films at these early stages, I'd have thought sound would be too - particularly in cinema, sound is just as important as visuals to create an immersive experience.
I’m hoping an extended version of the film will come out
They made the sound with the goal of it being immersive - and it truly was
I'm so glad I went to the theatre to watch Dune. The sound design truly drives the narrative and gives it weight and credibility.
The collection of people that worked on this film is amazing. A great work of art visually, audially, acting, story.....
That philosophy about making an Arrakis documentary soundtrack explains why Hans Zimmer didn’t go for some big bombastic score. It’s more akin to his work for Planet Earth, which I loved too.
love it when Paul yells 'Silence' how Bene Gesserit woman get terrified. Ha ha
The level of competency in every detail is so inspiring i started to attempt some perfection on anything i did after watching it, its not just about filmmaking its the attitude behind this level of craftsmanship, its something we all should strive for regardless of our job and pay. Its not for the sake of competition with others but with your own standards.
No wonder why I was hypnotized by this movie he did blade runner 2049.
what an incredible, brilliant group of artists
What an incredibly talented director, you can just tell how inspired and passionate his team is
These are exactly the sort of *passionate* artists you'd trust with such an epic franchise
Glad to know I wasn't alone in thinking the sound design was a massive contribution to the movie
i got chills! Dune deserve to win best sound, music score, cinematography, visual effects and costumes.
Everytime i listen Dune sound i feel like i am in an another world... Just awesome thanks to Hans Zimmer and his team for this beautiful sound
I’ve read the books so I was extremely excited to see it visualized cinematically. Such a stunning movie to put it mildly. But wow, the sound team outdone themselves too. When I heard ‘the voice’ for the first time it made me physically flinch. Really gritty, insidious and powerful- perfectly portrays the ability of the voice and the Bene Gesserit. Hearing the team explain their decisions of sound design really shows the amount of effort and thought put into every scene.
I was immediately surprised by the ornithopters, the tactics worked despite all the problems a real one would have it feels and sounds immediately real, a near perfect blend of design for function and design for looks, makes want one in real life.
To get a sense of what they are talking about, one needs to have watched it in a big theatre, preferably IMAX or Atmos…because it is out of this world. No premium home entertainment sound system is going to do any justice..simply because home video formats-streaming or blurays don’t have the sonic dynamic range that you’d get in a theatre..!! Can’t wait for Part 2
A personalized home theatre using high grade gear most certainly could give an amazing experience but not a cinema theater grade because of the space and shear size of the speakers.
@@Marsfrogie222 nothing can beat the theater going experience..nothing!!!
@@bighands69 agreed, but also because files used in cinemas are different than than that used at home…the dynamic range is just bigger
И как вам вторая часть? Мне первая понравилась гораздо больше.
Amazing sound design, and part two's is even better.
This is the best movie made in years, decades.
this is a use of sound design that is so incredibly rare nowadays, sound design as a narative tool and as part of the identity of the IP
loved the movie a lot , the music literally takes you into the world of dune .It feels out of the world .
I really hope they re-release this in IMAX as I missed it in theatres. When the sequel comes out they should do an IMAX double bill of both films together! That would be incredible!
I hope that happens
I hope so too since in Peru they just opened the first IMAX room and I couldn't enjoy Dune at its best
Dune 22' shows how even a new movie, when stood up to the greatest sci-fi of all time, still holds its own. This film punches way above its weight class.
The power of sound he made through this movie was phenomenal for me.
Watching Dune was a spiritual experience
Such a great experience this movie brought when I went to see it on the big screen. I'm hoping there will be an extended version soon! I am sure there was so much the director wanted to show.
I could have sit at the theater for 6 hours watching this movie
@@LuisSierra42 Saw it 4 times lol
@@lrosales797 If ANY film needs a 4h cut like LOTR its Dune , I think it might be like those films though and come after all the movies are out :(
We've been constantly amazed by the evolution of VFX in movies, for example Blade Runner 2049 and War for the Planet of the Apes, Dune isn't the exception. But the sound engineering of this film really made me feel like I was hearing something that has never been done before, Dolby Atmos was a trip.
Superb, for me the sound is 70% of a movie and this soundtrack is epic in every sense ,my room was pressurised and so was I ,loved every second of this wonderful movie and hats off to the fantastic sound techs who worked on this ,just hurry up with the second part, many thanks , Glenn.
This is one off my favorite books that I ever read. And the the original Film couldn’t keep up with it was disappointing but also it was challenging my mind and memory of the words I read. Every time since then I am in the desert I think of dune. This new film is such a joy to watch. Thanxs for being so graceful in delivering something that’s so important to me.
Wow. These guys don't go to work to put food on the table, they go to PASSION!
Wow. What experience. Sound is really transformative and used as medium to convey subtext BRILLIATLLY. I m totally in eve what Denis, Hans and crew did here. What a outer world journey. Cannot be much more cooler to await Dune part2 or even part3. Only grudge i have that Warner dint have set it from get go. Because i cannot wait long enough for this type of storytelling and its experience.
Denis said he was exhausted at the first part, so let's just wait :)
True masterclass
Thank you Warner Bros. Entertainment 🔥
I love how much this behind the scenes gives time to all these techs and experts time to speak. Nothing is better than seeing fellow nerds nerding out. 🙂
Some very wise and talented men worked on this!
The sound I desperately want to hear is an announcement of an extended edition....yeah I know impossible 🤣
Amazing... you realize that this is one of the things that brings the awe and reverence to these films
Thank for you for this extra content. Great film, music, sound, photography. Can’t wait for Part 2.
Dune is a total Masterpiece! Everyone who expects perfection has to watch this movie (the Trilogie) and will be not disappointed! The music is epic.. fits the pictures and storyline!!! Only the sound of Shai Hallut, the big one coming up to Paul... is nothing less than impressive, I thought a big Jet motor married with a Hurricane and a T Rex scream is coming at us... Stunning! Everything is huge in Dune... the sounds are so cool! It really is a psychedelic trip that is for sure... Denis has his mission accomplished, that I can say as a Viewer! My favorite movie from the last 15 years that is for sure!
Thank you for this content, I loved the movie and watching this behind the scenes is a real treat; can’t wait for part II
Its always a pleasure to listen to an Interview About Sound with the People's Voices in it Recorded perfectly ; gives such a clear picture !!!
Can't wait to see this about Dune part 2. Really curious with weapons sounds, those machine-guns in ornithopters...
Movie is awesome. I would have to see it again to really think about the sound specifically.(I’ll be honest, I think my theater was too loud, some of the movie previews were painfully loud. Anyways…) I think the movie is even better than part one and explores the themes of dune well.
Loved the cinematography, acting, script and visual effects. The spectacle and aura of the film is marvellous. It’s amazing the visual flair that’s present in all of Denis’s films, even going back to August 32nd on Earth. Read the book after seeing the film and I wished there was some more character development from characters such as Hawat, Yueh and Jessica. Anyway, still a magnificent film.
I loved this movie, set design , story, VFX , sound , all of it
I am actually just for the first 10 seconds here :D
Frank Herbert would be very proud Mr. Villeneuve. You did an outstanding job ❤❤
Bless you all for sharing this gem.
I love the ideas. Reminds me a lot of Lovecraft.
even the sound of this Documentary is amazing.
This is exactly the kind of attention to detail I would expect from serious worldbuilding. Thank you for the amazing work that comes through every second of Dune.
What a beautifully made movie. I wish studios would make more movies like this, on the level of greats like Lawrence of Arabia.
I just loved everything about this movie! FANTASTIC!!!
I missed it in theaters because of COVID, the sound alone must've made this movie a whole new experience. I missed gravity too, that must've been amazing.
It was worth the risk.
That's what I appreciate most in Denis Villeneuve's work: craftsmanship
Incredibly Insightful, Warner Brothers. Thank you so much and more of these please!
Absolutely amazing! Thank you!
SoundWorks always delivers.
What a great interview, just another avenue of thinking about the film even deeper.
Fantastic film, watching this special was a treat.
13:22 chills everytime.
Give Denis Villeneuve an oscar for best accent
Masterpiece 🙏🏽
Truly inspiring. I use to work in post production then transferred to work as a free lancer.. Once I bought my gear I hustled as a mixer/boom Op and doing dialogue and Foley editing on the side. I still do.. Its still hard because work sometimes falls through. Ultimately I want to continue scoring but since some arent willing to pay the right budget or keep rushing the process. It makes it hard to make a living. At least for someone like me, in my position.. Im a musician and I just got into the union as an A2. I hope it picks up!! Please I hope work picks up... I hope new producers see this and actually figure out how to have better budgets for smaller films so people can come up.. I want to go back doing scores..
this is amazing, thank you very much for this
Saw part 2 in theatre for the second time yesterday and the soundtrack nearly blew the theater speakers out 😂
These people are sooooo passionate.
Sound gave me goosebumps in imax
He is the best Director today!
They way they described that they wanted Shai-hulud to be godlike and awe-inspiring, not scary... This is what it looks like when the movie crew loves the source material. They so nailed this. The worm doesn't feel like a monster, but a force of nature. Like a an unstoppable storm or an avalanche.
Thank you for sharing this with us Warner Bros!
Can someone explain to me how the collaboration between the sound design and the score works?
Iconic!
This is absolutely incredible.
One of the best cinema experience
The sound is top notchy deserves an Oscar, kuddos guy.
I would honestly watch a 10 hours series about how Dune was made.
Sound design heaven!!! You could watch this movie with your eyes closed....
The sound of Baron Harkonnen's electromechanical spine sounds a lot like the sound of Combine door locks in Half-Life 2.
This movie is absolutely incredible
It will be a crime if this doesn't win best Sound Mixing/Editing at the Oscars.
Absolute Masterpiece
