Bonjour à tous, this week at the Château.
Ash saves one of the old outbuildings that Tracy had uncovered in a previous episode, and repurposes it for a space to refurbish all the old château radiators in.
Plus, a pair of friends that are stone masons call over to remove the broken marble fireplace in the dining room and take it away to restore it to its former glory.
And If you would like to join us on our family journey restoring this once abandoned château, then please just follow the link below, 🥰

About us,
We are a family from the North-East of England following our dream to restore a beautiful abandoned french Château. We discovered the heart stopping Château De Lalacelle in summer of 2020, this beautiful architectural monument Is set in the countryside of North-West France.
The moment we visited the Château we all fell in love, from the beautiful sweeping landscape and forests, to its stunning untouched interiors and magnificent spiral staircase in the turret.
Unfortunately Château De Lalacelle has been abandoned for a number of decades so will need a lot of restoration and DIY.
Please subscribe and follow our families journey, with the up’s and down’s in moving from the UK to rural France and restoring this beautiful building to its former glory.

  • Ash, for never having spray painted, is a fast learner. He does not wave the spray and keeps the same distance and speed of coverage. I have seen others fan it back and forth, but he is doing the right way

  • Great to see you putting the roof back on part of the old piggery, although Ash, the screws holding the laserlite on should be put through the high part of the corrugation, not in the valley. The screws should have a small rubber washer to seal against moisture but it's not designed to seal in the valley. That said, it may be different in France than here in Australia, but we do have a lot of corrugated tin and laserlite around the place. :-) Keep up the good work all of you.

  • It’s good to see you looking ahead yet again. After the spraying for the chateau is completed putting the space to good use as a greenhouse is brilliant. I see also that there is adjacent space available for the larger facility that will be needed in order to provide herbs and vegetables for the chateau all year round. Though this isn’t expressed I think this is an example again of finding modern uses for not only the chateau building itself but also outbuildings that are practical and in keeping with the spirit of the place. I think this is a smart way to preserve historic properties both in the present and in future years to come. How fortunate you are to make friends with artisans that can help with the restoration. I am glad that the dining room mantle will be reconstructed rather than discarded.

I like how you are willing to show professionals helping you, as I think that when some of these properties are very dilapidated, some real experienced artisans/engineers are needed, esp for structural issues. • Hi everyone, I sat down and watched all of your vlogs today as I've been home sick and could do nothing else. Great what you have achieved in just over a year and congrats. I only have a couple of things for you, but they will make a difference going forward. 1. Get all the ivy, blackberry or any other creeper of any kind off your stone surfaces, it has to go. This is because it damages any pointing to the effect it can cause stonework to become unstable putting the structure at risk of collapse. 2. Creeper, ivy etc pulls moisture into a structure and with that comes damp and rot 3. Hire an arbourist to check every tree and GPS them on a map of the property he will be able to tell you everything you need to know and tag the ones that need to become firewood. I worked on 2 ribbons red went green stayed. I did notice you have quiet a few dead ones in your fly overs from the drone footage. 4. Your pollarded trees are coming along beautifully, however every😊💁‍♀️🥂 new piece if growth must come from the top and never from the bottom. Get your snips out and remove everything at the base of the trunk. I recommend you do this straight away. Thank you for a wonderful day watching life in France. For the moment I am stuck in Melbourne waiting to return to my home in Brittany. Kindest regards Kim

  • One of the best channels I've come across. Love the work ethic and great progress you are making. If I can pass on a piece of advice from my own experience renovating an old property, as I've learned the hard way, the one rule to follow is to never ever use Cement in repairing a Lime Wall. The Cement is far harder than the Lime and will end up causing cracks which in turn not only weaken the wall, but also allow moisture to enter which further damages the structure. Lime is naturally breathable - Cement is not. Where a Lime wall will wick up moisture in cooler wetter months and dry out during warmer drier periods, if you put cement on then the moisture becomes trapped behind the cement - unless you remove the cement the wall doesn't dry out and you end up with dampness throughout. The same is true of Gypsum Plaster. If you ever plaster a Lime wall with gypsum then you destroy the ability of the wall to breath. Both gypsum plaster and cement are non breathable and will cause long term issues. If you don't want to end up doing the job twice then stay away from using Cement or Gypsum anywhere. You can make a large batch of hot Lime and keep onsite for both render and plaster applications. As long as the hot lime is kept submerged in water and doesn't come into contact with air then it can keep indefinitely ready for use - also the longer you wait to use it the better it is as it matures. If you would like to learn more about the damage Cement and Gypsum Plaster do to old Lime Constructed buildings then I can suggest watching any of the numerous videos on Peter Wards channel on KZhead. Most damp issues in old building are caused by using cement and Gypsum plaster - once removed the building dries out.

It's great to see Jonathan helping Ash with the roof renovation project. It reaaly turned out nice. How clever to repurpose the space that way. Ash, you did such fine detail work. You're right to say that you'll get many years of use from it. How exciting to be able to restore the original mantle rather than have to find one that fits perfectly in its place. It's wonderful to hear your updated plans for the next few months. If you're able to maintain your current rate of progress, doon no one will recognize the place. That will be so amazing. Keep on cracking on!

  • What might be helpful in the spray booth is a rotating table. That way you stand in one place and rotate the radiator, instead of you having to walk around it. Unless the radiators are just too heavy. Love your channel and all your family helping with restoring the gorgeous property! A fan from Southern California. 💕

    • I watched Stephanie today too and the chair Terry restored. What an amazing job he did!! The chair was beautiful, and when Terry showed the before picture I could not believe it, my mouth fell open!! Such a work of art Terry made out of an old chair broken in pieces! The fabric he chose was beautiful, suited LaLande with the peacock.
