James May and his director, Tom Whitter, have been working together for over a decade now, putting together such shows as 'Man Lab', 'Cars Of The People' and 'Our Man In Japan'. So we thought we'd sit them both down and get them reminiscing about the good (and bad) times they've had filming together over the years.

@@BobMonkeypimp Oh, I won't bother entering then ☹️
@Podkova No...you left us in our time of need-:Boris
Honestly with the long hair he’s looking like “James May: our nan in Japan”
Hahaha
🤣🤣👍
With the beard especially
I was thinking he was starting to look a bit Billy Connolly.
James looks like an eccentric physics professor. Or like he's about to build a time machine.
Or Bohemian
I just want him to scream Great Scott
I think he's applied to be Gandalf in the new Amazon series..
We all know better...
Dr Weetos
Who wouldn’t want to work with James may the man is a legend
Dude like I ToTaLY heard this rumor like he has a Ferrari which is like Orange can’t confirm even though been a subscriber for almost entire drivetribe :3
I agree, could listen to the guy for hours.
Someone who doesn’t like him probably
@@Pocket-AA-Pro I think you nailed it right there. That’s exactly the kind of person who wouldn’t want to work with James May.
Agreed. Absolute leg-end is the bloke.
I have to say, I really liked Man Lab. It was quite fun to watch. I ended up binge watching the whole series in a weekend.
I don't know if they mention it in the video because I haven't watched it yet, but I'm pretty sure James is making a new "lab" show because I saw it on his IMDB in "pre-production".
A whole weekend to watch Man Lab? It's not that challenging...
It had a really quirky appeal to it, didn't it? Kind of a `Mythbusters-meet-home-improvement` vibe. Ended up doing pretty much the same thing as you.
Luckily got the complete series on dvd to complement the other May programs.
I want 'Man Lab' back so badly, even if it can't be called 'Man Lab' any more. We need the return of James alongside Simmy, Rory, and TV's Oz Clarke.
👍
Non-Binary Transbender Lab?
Hear hear
am watching it now. revelling really
I cant speak for everyone... but id watch a 5min monologue of James May talking Japanese Porcelain
Release the May cut!
He could talk bout paint drying and I'd still listen to it with amazement!
I like that about him. And I’d totally watch that too.
James is looking like Einstein and a wolf in one.
well... nice combination! but I have a very different vision for that! James is more like Einstein & and another physic professor! 🤷🏻♂️
He should play wolfeinstein then
@@ST-xd5yy 😂👍🏻
Not going to lie he looks like my dad with hair
I can't see anyone else but Billy Connolly
James May: Is a qualified pilot. Also James May: I don't like heights of windyness...
Being in an aeroplane is much different from standing on a tall building.
One of my brothers worked for TWA, and he told us about a trip to Paris. The crew's Captain, a pilot with thousands of hours of flight time, refused to go on a tour of the Eiffel Tower because he was afraid of heights.
@@bluerex03 I think in that case its a fear of falling, not necessarily heights. I'm no fan of risky high places - but have been a pilot myself. Apples and Oranges. Hard to fall from my strapped in seat. And to add, I'm happy to rock climb and abseil. Safety lines make all the difference.
James’s hair is what happenes when we’ve been stuck inside for a year.
Become jaded from life
@@abhigejf or the new Dacia sandero
your hair will look like this in *a year* !?!? well your hair is growing fast for sure! 🤣
His hair is making a statement of rebellion.
Great hair! 😍
Our Man in Japan really showed that director-presenter relationship well. James admitting how they're desperate for content, Tom arguing with James about paintings, having to retake the Momotaro scene several times, the luxury train food fiasco, and the incredibly awkward Yamaha factory tour all felt real and the emotions really pushed through. I felt uncomfortable and tense watching nearly all of those. Brilliant.
You could tell they were getting on each others nerves as the trip went on. I agree with the uncomfortable part.
I really want to see Rory cutting his own hair, and James getting so tired in the middle of a piece to camera that both he and the cameraman sit down before starting up again.
Tom seems like such a nice bloke, I see how he matches with James
Shame Tom is reluctant to try James’s food.
@@thekitowl Only the peanut butter. He's sampled all the rest to my knowledge.
You know I'd actually be interested in seeing that long piece to camera they had in Japan that couldn't go into the show. It sounds legitimately interesting.
Me too. Hope they put it on KZhead.
"Meine Katze ist klug" - my cat is smart James May's German skills have always been impressive
I caught onto that too, mein vater ist groß yh that’s all I know
Of course you’re wet, Hans...you’re standing under a waterfall!!!
ohhh i thought it was: meine katz is krug - ... is champagne
It''s nice to see Tom as a more complete entity, rather than only as a consumer of old fashioned sandwiches.
It's great to see a bit of Tom. It's fun watching older Top Gear episodes and seeing him in the edge of shot whenever a cameraman or 'producer' is on screen.
Tom, if you've read any comment section related to James, you'd know we always want more. POST ALL THE CUT CONTENT. WE NEED IT
Starts binge watching Man lab. Regrets nothing. Pure joy in catching up on missed Mayness.
👍
James is rocking that Richard beard, I love it!!
All of those pieces that were cut out because too slow for TV should go on KZhead!
Spilling tea over a mic, that's the most British incident that has ever happened Lol
6:03 You hit the nail on the head about American productions: quantity over quality.
can we all take a minute and just admire how absolutely handsome James is with the goatee, hair assemble? the goatee suits him amazingly!
Ay, nice to see a video with Tom. I always enjoyed seeing him in Man Lab aswell :)
James doesn't like windy days. We learned something today. Honestly I'd watch this for hours, loving it.
Please hurry with PT2! This is wonderful, I could watch these two chatting for hours!
James looks like the chilliest history professor
Nice to see and indeed hear from Director Tom!
All the Man Lab talk makes me wonder what Simmy is into these days.
Right, where is Simmy??? We want to know!!! :::=^)
Simmy is a genius....I wonder what sorts of things he’s off engineering right about now 😊
Petition for them to release the footage of the long piece-to-camera about porcelain, and also the one of Rory cutting his own hair! All in favor, say aye!
I've absolutely loved all of May's extra shows. Man Lab was was particularly great.
I have to agree with Tom, James is an amazing story teller.
You dont need to apologise for James' audio, you should however apologise for James' goatee...
Jame’s hair and beard final suit his persona. Perfect! Don’t change it. 🙂👍
Man lab is hands down my favourite series I've ever watched. Bring back James, Simmo and Rory (and occasionally Oz when he's half sober)!
i want to see the 5,5 mins of james, talking about Japanese porcelain
I very much loved MANLAB and its raw feel. DO MORE MANLAB PLEASE!!!!!
I was happy to see it was the "end of part 1" as i was enjoying this conversation a lot when i saw it was nearing the end. Looking forward to more... POWAHHH!
ahhhh... well! it was a little bit different for me! I think I missed that part. actually I was just awake for only 15 seconds 😅
I mean... May talking, with an underwater voice, a nice background music & seeing people drinking tea a quite sunny day . . . 😅 and by the way! this is a record for me! last time I felt sleep in only 8.357 seconds! 😐
@@sz7568 Haha, yeah it happens to me as well, i regularly wake up on the couch, and when i try to retrace to the moment where i fell asleep, i'm sometimes shocked to see how little i actually watched before i went K.O, but i don't think it was ever a matter of seconds!
Total class. If May is talking to the camera, I will listen.
Cars of the people was absolutely fantastic. Thank you, loved it
James' hair is pretty cool. I say he should keep it!
So nice to finally see both of you in front of the camera. I was watching man labs earlier n was thinking that when Tom helps out with lifting the kitchen slab was the first time I saw him! Hope I'm right.
@Mr. May - agree with him your enthusiasm for storytelling is unsurpassed! And super fun to watch!
I loved Manlab, I wish it could come back. What an awesome show.
Nice to see the OAPs having a cup-a and nice friendly chat
You must do a video about James and Oz Clarke
*Cars Of The People* *will be* one of the best car “documentary’s” I’ve ever seen
We need Simmo back.
I'm not sure what you mean by "will be". The series is on Amazon, dated 2014.
Oh awesome! I like Tom and was sorta hoping there'd be a video of him and James talking about their experiences.
James is just brilliant, a gift to television. One of the greatest presenters of all time, for me, he is the greatest!
Close second to Clarkson in my opinion. What puts Clarkson ahead for me is the tone of his voice and his timing.
I’d pay for a May TV channel.
Every time I see James every thing seems ok I like listening to him about anything
Wow, James is morphing into Billy Connolly . .
James in Japan was great! A few thought it was gonna be some sort of college lesson on Japan but it was very entertaining!
more videos like this where you guys are just chatting with james, richard or jeremy. please and thank you.
I can listen to James for hours. He is very interesting to listen too.
Their small argument in Japan at Mt. Fuji was so cool, I wish it’d have lasted longer, I wanted to get into the dialogue more. I love intelligent rants! I also appreciated the little bits with the crew and some bloopers. They’re as much a part of it as the presenter and it’s nice to see them in the spotlight for a moment or two, you don’t usually see or hear about them in other shows at all, which is a shame.
i would watch this unedited, it's gonna be like a chill podcast
I enjoyed watching Man Lab and thought it was a fantastic and entertaining show. My favorite projects were the concrete kitchen and the integrated train that ran through the house. I was upset when I found out it wasn't being renewed for a fourth season.
"Man Lab" was one of my favorite series ever.
ManLab, top gear and toy stories are easily my favourite tv shows. Timeless and brilliant
I’d add to that the Oz & James drinking holiday series.
Can't wait for more 'Our Man In...' James made my lockdown (Belgium, going on a year now) slightly more bearable.
Both of them looks very comfortable with each other.
Right there with May on wind, I don't like the wind. That bridge and bicycle ride scared me when I watched it, Totemo Abunai , I don't think I could have rode across.
As a car and aircraft enthusiast I wish James would do a documentary on aircraft. He keeps teasing us with his knowledge, what with the Lightning t-shirts and boring Jeremy on detail differences between MIG-17s on top gear. He could present a cracking show about WW2 fighter planes or similar. Sure I'm not the only one that would enjoy his presenting skills applied to the subject.
I enjoyed that, Thank you.
I just finished watching a series of "Oz & James" and seeing how old he's gotten here reminds me how fast time flies by
And looking in a mirror doesn't remind you? Looking at your kids? Dead relatives' graves? Car design? Et cetera...shut up.
Great series though.
Ah, finally we get to see this mysterious man who's in the background of all of James' shows. I was re-watching Toy Stories recently and there was the same Tom that was debating James about the meaning of art near mount Fuji about a decade later.
You ment ruined the part about the japanese trip.
I can listen to James natter on for hours , And i've watched " The Reassembler series " , Tell Bim to do more like this when he can.
With you on the wind James. I also have a fear of it going back to my childhood. I am mostly in control of it but it has its moments!
"What it's been like working with James May for 10 years" - SLOW! I'll get my coat!
love this,,, James does not seem be putting on a show when he talks....
I think we deserve a KZhead Channel for compilation videos of James May out takes from Tom for all his shows. like EVERY SINGLE CLIP of James May that didn't make the edit.
James is looking really well. Cant wait for more stuff from the trio
I believe it’s off to Scotland next.
Just imagine all the static electricity with all that hair and acrylic jumper on James May enough to give someone a real jolt ...
From the whole group, he was the best!
Do you want me to cut it triangularly or rectangularly?
Circularly would be nice. Have they ever cut the sandwiches triangularly? Seems like every episode I've seen its always been rectangularly. Perhaps triangularly is too much like a genteel afternoon high tea at Harrods or such like?
The legend that is James May....as cool and nerdy as his older brother Brian. :-) :-) :-)
Is there any way I could get my hands on the music that starts playing over the intro? (and then continues over the questions/interview itself) This might seem like an out of place comment but I'm really interested in it
Would love to see the porcelain clip. Sounds fantastic! Please bring out a extended version of the programme.
Still waiting for James and Manlab to capture a Lighting Bolt!
You guys might want to teach your editor that if your interview's mic quality is bad and the volume for it is low you want your post production audio to match, such as the music that plays when a question appears on screen. I understand a lot of the time its preset stuff but the little things help not deafen those of us in headphones
When you go on amazon and sure enough there is a comment saying that manlab is ahead of its time and will be studied at an academic level. Prehaps the time for manlab has returned?
Rory was awesome. I’d like to see him on something again. Lol
I love the YOLO method, encourages me to start my business and figure out the full plan later
Brilliant. One question: Who directed this one, then? Follow up: Is that why the audio is bad?
James carries both channels
James May, the Legend❗️
Rahh James is looking like he’s building cars that do things at 88mph 😂
I really want to see that "satsuma" clip on DriveTribe!!!
Love chill lo-fi music
James seems to be Mantling Sheogorath the Daedric Prince of Madness.
Can we get a James May unedited series? In fact, can we just get all of them doing unedited programming? I often think you guys underestimate how much we love them.
Are these Pantone mugs you’re having your tea in? I like those. 👍
Loved cars of the people!!!!
The best of TG, I hate wind too, try biking across the Severn bridge in a gale, you get very respectful.
Fantastic. You could make a loosely themed talk show with just two of them, the theme could change each month.
“Back when James smoked” is iconic considering you can see him have a dart in the behind the scenes video on Lucy’s channel. And so we are clear no hate here, it’s hard to shake the habit especially if you grew up in the era where everyone was still smoking.
Tom's best off camera quote: "you've written your name wrong?"
I always just assumed Tom was like James May's boyfriend 🤣🤣
I think Jane would have something to say about that! 🤣
Who's Jane?
Release the May cut of Our Man in Japan!
