If you were to ask anyone in the whole world for advice about how to pass your driving test, James May would probably be somewhere in your top 5 picks. He has actually brought at an app recently to help people pass their test and get out on the roads, and he has sat down in his bunker to give you all some clever tips as well.
Check out James' new app here: jamesmaytheorytest.onelink.me...

It's nice that James is still working with the original sound editor from old Top Gear. Who is still deaf and just guesses audio levels of microphone and background music.
I thought this was heart warming comment about how kind James is and then I read the ending. hahahahaha

brilliant comment
Someone else who has watched many of the old clips on KZhead.
Does he still use Kiff the Sound Guy with the prosthetic hand? :)

Loved that episode

Some say he's deaf, some say he doesn't know what sound is. All we know is, he's the sound editor.
underrated comment
It's actually the Stig's sound editing cousin
😂😂😂
James has aged so well! I think not having the constant stress of working with Clarkson has made him 20 years younger!
He honestly looks better than 15 years ago
Unlike Clarkson who’s started to age twice as fast
Looks a lot like Billy Connolly
Unlike Jeremy who looks 70
🤣 Clarkson is hilarious though but James and Hammond are too
I wasn’t confused about my steering wheel until James started describing it.
Now I'm indefinitely going left I can't stop it
I've been driving for 4 years but I'll still watch this entire thing
@Ouchwitz Lampshade Emporium LLC Not everyone that has a drink develops a drinking problem. Some people have moral stands point.
Haha ditto! & I’ve been driving for 10 years
@Ouchwitz Lampshade Emporium LLC imagine thinking people can't handle themselves and not drink and drive.
4 years is not long time driving.
@@Luke-ey4df same, except I've been driving for 36 years 😆
Reminder, james didn't pass his test the first time! Driving instructor: "slams board" WATCH OUT, there s a small child in middle of the road! James May: "no there isn't" (carries on driving)
JM: "because there wasn't" JC: "so you were just being pedantic..." JM: "no, I was being correct!" RH: "he was anticipating an emergency stop, not an argument you fool"
@@ldbrn11 I love you both of u

As a South Australian, knowing James has driven through the flinders rangers has for some reason made me feel slightly fluffy inside
Aww
Wait, he has? That's awesome! The flinders are gorgeous! And so is everything down the eyre and fleurieu peninsula. Proud to call SA my home.
@@OHaraekul if you watch the video he says its the worst place to drive
@@bradirv its only the worst place to drive if you're driving from say one state to another, because theres hundreds of kilometers of absolutely nothing desert. If you're driving up in mountains or whatever its quite nice, we've got quite a lot of those winding roads the british love so much.
This feels too targeted I just turned 17 today and James May enlightens me
the youtube algorithm has become too strong
Happy birthday mate
Happy birthday
Happy birthday!
Happy Birthday fellow 17 year old!
That Honda fireblade in the back though!!
Saucy bike, love the colour scheme reminds me of the Norwegian flag (kinda want one just for that).
i expect it scared the bejeezus out of Mr May and now its just eye candy
Yeah I was gonna say whose CBR in the background???
@@ukdnbmarsh I doubt it. He’s been driving motorbikes for a long time. And he’s been driving at speeds in excess of 230mph
He has maxed a Veyron remember Edit Sorry caprise I saw your comment after
As an Indian, I can confirm that he knows a lot more than you think about the Indian driving scene
I went to India in 2019. You guys honk your horns at everything.
@@w-james9277 we communicate using horns. There are different meanings for every honk that we do 😂
@@w-james9277 iam a south indian from kerala. When i went to north india i was annoyed by all the honking by the mumbai people. I mean we use horns to communicate ‘’iam here’’ on the other side of a curve but i was about to get myself earraped there
@@VMKAROUND365 I went to Deli and Madhya Pradesh. Wishing you guys all the best with the pandemic! You'll beat it eventually.
I've got my Indian driving test tomorrow. Thank you Mr.May!
Wasn’t there a Top Gear about it?
Ok pataks curry sauce
@@NYLFR yes, they said something about driving 6 ft forward and back
Must be the easiest thing in the world
I thought you guys just give them a few rupees and off you go with your license
Really enjoyed hearing about the difference between India and Europe!
As someone who lives in an Indian suburb... I drive both on urban and rural roads....the traffic makes you confident enough to think you can do NASCAR, the road surface makes you confident enough for Rallying

"People who own Ferraris" So its perfect for James.
This video is a testament to how much I like to hear James May speak. I have my license for 20+ years, but I clicked and watched it whole.
This is why... James May is favourite of the three, full of wisdom and knowledge
As an Indian, who grew up in America, Im quite happy James understands their driving culture!
It feels great to see james knows so much about INDIA
I remember Clarkson says about James"explaining something you understand in a way that you don't understand" that is the James May way 😂
It was December 23rd 1996 on my 16th birthday at 4:30 when I took my driving test. The guy administering my test wanted desperately to leave for the Christmas holiday and directed me to pull out drive a mile up a straight road then he asked me to back up and park on an empty block then said “well done” and we headed back to the dmv after 6 minutes and I got my license 🤣🤣🤣🤣
My father was a doctor in a country town and when my big sister took her driving test, he had just delivered the examiners daughter. So my sisters test was to drive around the block and park in a bay in the middle of a wide road. I suspect that was the examiners way of saying thanks to my father for an easy birth.
Hey thats my dads birthday
My car's 10th birthday :-)
@@notmarkus1325 Please tell him I said happy Birthmas. Also ask him which one of his aunts always tried to give him a birthday/Christmas present to be cheap 😂
"You're a great grandmother; do some knitting!" -James May
Steering was the easiest part when I learned. I remember in my first lesson we were going to just go up and down a straight road but the instructor got me to go around a housing estate with various parked cars and traffic which was a bit scary. The hardest part is dealing with traffic and complex road layouts.
Speed and power.
10:48 That’s all I needed for this week, thank you James.
Honda Fireblade - Awesome!
I was one of the lucky ones who passed the first time. I didn't say a single word. I had never been so quiet in my entire life.
Indian here. Never had this perspective on the driving style in my country, but now the more I think about what Mr. Slowly said the more it makes sense!
That Honda looks so beautiful.
I am from India, I find it really intimidating to even cross streets in Sweden 😂 The cars stop for me to cross, but I find it really odd after being accustomed to cross the road only when there are no cars arounds.
I usually rattle like a leaf, I was strangley calm on the day of my test... I suppose being relaxed and comfy is best!
This channel deserves way more subscribers
really got my driving test tomorrow...
It's a sign... I just got banned from driving today wups
As someone that passed my test just over a year ago, the best piece of advice I could give is to get as much practice driving when outside of lessons. I must have driven at least 5 hours a week with my dad and as l wasn’t under as much pressure from an instructor, I felt more relaxed when learning and gained a lot more confidence on the road. Passed my test after 4 months without any minors 💪💪
the timing of this video is impeccable because I'm going to take my drivers test this week
I don't need to listen to this but I do still. Have had drivers licens for, hmmm...almost 40 years. Just fond of Mr May and listen to him 😄
Thanks James! Passed both tests and used your app.
Thanks James I grew up watching Top Gear and Grand Tour now I'm going for my license and this helps a lot.
Got my first driving lesson in 2 days, although been driving with my dad for 2 months daily now. James May is my hero! This is exactly what I need.
It's late at night where I am but James May's video cannot be neglected;)
At me it is 20:00
Yeah mine is gmt+7
I have been driving for more than 20 years and suddenly Mr. May made me confused about how to use the steering wheel and the mirrors😂
As someone who lives in Australia, I completely agree with the worst place to drive question
banging tunes and berk, i love him so much
In India you got an ambulance on your back, public bus up front, motorist on the left and a guy trying to pass on the right.
james: “is it funny if i go *TOOT*” me: *laughs*
Taking my driving theory test was like being admitted to,and then released from a young offenders institution. I’m happy to say I passed first time but forgot everything immediately.
it's always nice to watch the background of James.
I'll rewatch this again next year because why not
The background noise at the start was so satisfying
“And we enjoy getting cross at it.” I love this.
Thank you! I thought I was the only one who struggled with steering when learning to drive. I'd been a biker for a year or two before tackling cars. On my first lesson I drove down the main street of our local town; leant nicely into the left hand corner at the end and carried straight on almost into the local branch of Nat West. We had little score cards for each lesson; I got nil points for steering.
This is great advise for me who have quite recently started driving for the first time.
Every time I have trouble falling asleep I go to a video where it's just James may talking and it calms me down loads. He's just the perfect combination if funny and calm.
German here. Even though i have to admit i have been quite of a slacker with our app, the theoretical test worked on the first go. However, it took me 3 attempts for the practical one simply for the reason of stress/panic due to the test situation (second one barely lastet 2 Minutes -.-). Most important advice would probably be to just try to stay calm and always keep in mind that it will work out eventually, otherwise your instructor wouldnt have let you take the test yet.
Jeez that Honda Fireblade!!
Just in time. I'm currently preparing for my driving test so it will come in handy.
Thanks James, very cool!
Oh my goodness, this is like the right moment because I'm having trouble with passing my exam 😂
As an Australian I agree on the distances in driving here
The Australia drive is so true did it years ago took nearly 5 days of boredom to get from Melbourne to perth
During my NY driving test I got yelled at for driving too slowly and holding up traffic. I was going 35 in a 30 and there were no other cars in sight... then she yelled at me for having the A/C on instead of having the windows down. It was 90 degrees outside...
That sounds off
@@doubleutubefan5 still not as crazy as the one in Maryland. There you don’t even go on the street just in a parking lot. The big “test” is they say it’s over and to go park but there is a stop sign in the middle of the lot and if you don’t stop you fail. I’ll take NY drivers over MD drivers any day.
At 90 degrees you'd be dead
@@yodaslovetoy I’m in the US lol, 90 degrees Fahrenheit
My best advice is don't sit your test in the autumn/winter as the low sun can cause you to not see a flashing "school 20mph" zone sign, allegedly
Or cars coming across a junction if you drive a Range Rover.
I needed this literally 2 days ago😫
Litrally perfect timing im getting mine in half a month
King Theoden is here! (Just found this channel with my fav car-guys. Cool, subscribed)
Its 1962 and I am taking my test for the 3rd time in a Morris 8 series E which is my father's car, he was a Police Constable, his uniform was in plain view on the back seat , sailed through on problem.
This video is... very helpful
Miss you in top gear
I passed and used your app, cheers James ;)
Thats a nice looking Fireblade at the background
@08:55 From the most diligent part of the UK I totally agree with this statement
Haha, I just failed my drivers license exam today.
i failed 3 times man going on my 4th
you failed the theory test?
its not monday
I failed my test by failing to indicate left when going right on a roundabout yes that wording is correct
@@Omie01 yeah, the problem I have is it set me back $250
James you legend I have my written exam tomorrow, thank you.
The horn is a very funny prop. I laughed when he honked it. :-)
How fitting, im going to have my driving test (Sweden) on Wednesday. Very nice lol.
On the steering wheel bit, I never had the issue of direction, but learning about its tendency to self-center when the vehicle is in movement. As a learner, I had held onto the wheel too tightly, and practically took my hands off the wheel for self centering, so it will take a little while to learn how to smoothly go from actively steering to holding on well while still letting the wheel move on its own a bit. For fellow Americans, try driving in a state with a reputation for less strict enforcement of laws. Flow of traffic is king over the speed limit. California and New Jersey are the two places I know of that this is the case but there are probably others.
One of my brothers worked in F1. Melbourne was the last race of the season so some of the team thought they'd have a break and drive to Ayers Rock. At the end of the first day they realised they'd barely made a dent in the journey, and returned to Melbourne the following day.
melbourne has never been the last race of the season or even the last race before the mid-year break. maybe you mean adelaide but then the drive from adelaide to uluru isn't actually that bad.....
I did pass the first time but still gonna listen to what James has to say.
mixing driving styles does work, here in kenya we do both following the rules and drive manic with the flow since the public transport vans and busses get their way and have more experience while the private cars have some drivers that are some of the most terrible drivers and they are the issue so those of us who drive well follow the rules but have to get around and manage other drivers
I learnt when taking my theory test, not to give answers that should be right, but to give the answers they want.
Still love the Urban Tiger Blades from the early 1990's
Best tip my instructor gave me was to adjust your mirrors slightly too far so that your head movements to look in them would be exagerated and makes you look aware! My examiner said despite the worst reverse park he'd ever seen, he passed me because I was a very aware driver!
I'm more impressed by Captain Slow's motorcycle collection than his car collection
got my license 3 months ago, and i don’t even live in the uk, but thanks james!
Awesome 👌🏼
I have the James may theory test app THAT I PAYED FOR. But it’s brilliant. Got my test booked for June. 👍
I love Prof. James
will use these tips for everything i do in life
Thanks for the help full tips James. Although i don't know how some of the tips help to pass on a Finnish driving test. Like being Welsh.
I live in Florida and nobody worries about it here. We don’t even have to parallel park to pass our test
nice video , thank you
Driving in my country, Australia is so lit!!!!
I live in the US - hope this improves the app.
I love the small quiet laugh off camera at 2:01 😂Was that Tom? But rightly so to laugh😂
We need a video of that georgeus Fireblade in the backround!!!!!!
Scarily relevant. I’ve got my first lesson soon
The best way to familiarise yourself with steering in my opinion is to go on and do your trailer (B+E) test. I didn't realise how sloppy my driving had become (after more than 18 years of accident free driving) until I sat my HGV tests. Retraining definitely improved my skill, largely by making me realise my limitations.
I can explain the welsh thing i think. Lot of the welsh are farmers, tractor test is done at 16, and everybody will have been driving tractors since they can reach the pedals.
Amazing james. I hope y'all find an excuse to come by gettysburg, pa sometime. The n.e. coast of america is overpopulated and overlooked.
I passed my theory first time on a Thursday, must be being half Welsh that mate it a 50/50
