I had thought a lot of his success was due to luck, whether with finding the right things to analyse, or people stumbling across him online- now, I realise that with a personality, dedication and intellect like his, it almost doesn't matter how much lady luck favoured him. He feels like such an impressive force of nature here, that his success seems almost inevitable.

  • It's interesting how many of the original top youtube creators felt like they had to maintain a persona. It's really great to see them be themselves and grow into the confidence that they are enough without a persona.

    @UnfazedPhoenix@UnfazedPhoenix Жыл бұрын
    • Definitely. I think it was definitely exemplified by the Vine boom where, like them or not, you had a bunch of creators who came in because they had token personalities. I'm not saying their fans loved them for those archetypal or 'token' personalities, but they were able to capture an increasing audience because their 'thing' could be summed up in a few words, or in a 6-second video every week. The original KZheadrs didn't think they could compete because Viners had to inherently play around a much lower attention-span (and therefore quicker but more 'juicy' content) and a much more mobile-oriented environment, where one's 'relevance' and ability to stay on the platform with a consistent amount of clicks would've had a much shorter lifespan than a typical KZheadr. I'm not saying that's bad, what I'm saying is that - there would've been an advantage to doing that - that the original KZheadrs wouldn't have had from the get go. So, one of the things they could do to inhibit a quick shift into this totally different paradigm just to compete with the Viners was to use a single persona that they could bend and shape at will just to succeed. They could no longer just make a video they wanted to make on a saturday evening, telling their viewers about how their day went - they had to be a personality because a bunch of these creators from other platforms were coming in, already born with archetypal and bombastic personalities. A lot of these Viners had already streamlined what would come to be a much more clickable format, and the only way for the original KZheadrs to compete was to ditch the flexibility of old laid-back KZhead, and to adopt the streamlining and content optimization that would have already been subconsciously well understood by the Viners - with the biggest part being that you now also had to completely optimize your persona as well just to stay relevant. But now that a lot of these people are well established and have gone years making a relatively stable living: they're no longer worried about making too many compromises just to stay 'relevant'. Sure, you still have to do a load of work to 'stay', but you no longer need to do much to keep up. There is no longer enough change happening on YT that warrants the entire present creatorbase to suddenly do an annual shift in what they want to do just to continue getting views, and thus easing your viewerbase to a much more genuine 'persona' is finally completely doable.
