Dude I just found your channel. love your how to videos, straight to the point. All car repair videos should be like this, no face reveals, no telling me about your family/day/pets, no talking to the camera, no bullshit, just show me the car. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
Amen lol!
No starting off the video with "what is up guys!? blah blah blah back with another video!"
Exactly, nowadays every instructional video ends up being a vlog in the beginning
Yeeeeeees exactly.
THIS. Other channels this would have been a 20 minute long video.
Not bad for an Aerosol can! I also love how the video was short and strait to the point! Thanks a million

Just a quick comment for those who have not yet gone through the school of hard knocks. THIS IS NOT A QUICK AND SKILLESS JOB. You really have to follow every step in order to get good results, otherwise you get crap. Do not try to dry sand your clear coat off either --it will leave deep scratches. If you don't like the way it turned out, don't panic! Use 2000 grit sandpaper to wet sand, after you have let your clearcoat dry at least a day. Than use some compound with a buffer to really shine it up nice. You can save your paint job this way.
Would you not lightly sand the base coat before applying the clearcoat?
@@nzmarco depending how your base coat look. If you notice a lot of runs, dust or imperfections you can do light sanding using fine grit. Clean it with a safe cleaning agent and use a tack rag to ensure no dust left behind before clearing.
@@nzmarco Always lightly sand before applying clear or it won't stick.
Agreed 1,000%. This is not a skilless endeavor. KZhead videos are great for learning but at times I think they oversimplify things. Some intentionally others not intentionally. I don't believe the producer of this video was intentionally trying to mislead people. I wish I had his skill
@@nzmarco yes, I feel like a step with skipped. I feel like they should have sounded defender after painting before clearcoat that’s just my opinion I could be wrong look like it would’ve turned out better if it was sanded before the clear.
This 100% works, I used different paint tho, keep it waxed every few months and use car covers during the scorching summertime and it will last you years, im going on 3 years now and it still looks as if I did it yesterday... This video is underrated!
Thank you for sharing your experience with the clear coating!
Do you know how to get specific colors in a spray can like that? I’m looking for black, for a 2002 Honda accord. Is that a generic enough color/car that I can use the spray cans from the auto parts store? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
@@MissMarie1377 I get it mixed at my local paint supplier they will just put it in a can for you it cost more but nice for small jobs

Yeah panel shops rely on $500 cars coming in for repairs that exceed their price tag, RIP panel shops Side note, this is a temporary touch up and won't last very long and is only useful for flipping a cheap car
Gotta love capitalism
Yeah right! Until you do this and realize there is a huge step he missed, orange peal! Not to mention, that was just a fender! 75% of people dont have the time to can spray paint a whole car let alone the time it takes to sand by hand!!
JKazama182 He does mention orange peel, and this method is meant to repair individual panels not an entire car.
I really appreciate that you don't waste time. You show what to do and the results without wasting time. Fantastic!
And he does an amazing job. I could only wish to do a job like that. Thank you.
Awesome job! Very easy to understand the way you explained and demonstrated the process. I like the way you condensed the whole thing bit kept everything needed in a very good editor fashion. Thanks for sharing!
Sooo I've 'inherited' 3 cars that need this so badly. Thank you for this, I may be broke but I'm proud of what I do have and like to take care of my stuff. You are awesome.
why is inherited in apostrophe did you steal them?
Tip, get a small bucket and put warm soapy water in it. Get a sponge to keep the sanding area wet. Reduces friction and you end up with a better job of sanding.
Fantastic video. Straight to the point without missing any critical steps. Thank you!
Fantastic!! Just what I was looking for. Thanks for making this so simple and straightforward.

Great points, I know very little about painting. I scratched up my firebird using too much pressure on a hard rubber fender, got lighter sand paper and went over it. But this method seems great, sounds like it will work, well done. Subscribed.
I think your Video on Clear Coat repair is one the best ive seen on You-Tube. Your straight to the point and the job was trully helpful , thanks a bunch ! 👍
Finally, a video that is straight to the point! Thank you Sir...
I really appreciate that you didn’t make this a 20 minute video on how to use a spray can like most people would do.
I've got the exact same car with the exact same problem! This looks amazing, great job. Something I've been thinking about doing for a while, I just don't know how much life the thing has left in it.
Excellent. Probably the best video I’ve seen for just such a repair. Awesome. Thank You.

Amazing! Brilliant video, results, pacing, camera work. A joy to watch and the content is spot on. More please!
What a great video. Concise and helpful. Top man.
Quite amazing results and very reassuring so thanks for the instructional video. Prepping well obviously takes some time but the return for that effort is appears to be well worth it. I have a ‘95 Miata with custom pain that was horribly expensive and doesn’t come in spray cans. Hopefully I will be able to bypass the paint coat step and still get a acceptable end result.
Same here.😔

I own a body shop lol and everytime somebody ask "is there anyway i can get it cheaper, my response is always the same....just do it yourself" that's how you save the most money on any job😎
@@lismsthebenchandthebooth2230 exactly! Every one of my clients that asks this I point them to KZhead. There's not a thing out there you can't learn from youtube. Basically all you're doing is paying me so you don't have to do it.
@@krazykozey2259 yup i agree...its the block sanding process that usually brings them back like "how much did you want to do this again"😂😂
Sand paper, tape, paper, canned spray paint, canned clear coat. What was cost? How many coats? Was there chemical reaction with factory paint/primer? Did the paint match? Of all colors only black is universal! But fade? I'm not in anyway in auto body. But I've seen many cheap paint jobs. This is just another gimmick! If you want to try. Try on a model car. If it doesn't work, at least it was cheaper than a real one!
People tend to get a little hysterical about paint finish on older automobiles, this video is a great example of how a really quite presentable finish can be a achieved affordably & with a small amount of effort & work space available. No, this is not professional quality, but it is really amazingly good for spray cans & gives the car a new lease of life for a few years. Well done to you on sharing your skills on this as getting a cars paint professionally restored is almost beyond most of us financially now. And bonus is doing a section at a time is much easier than tackling the whole car at once.
Yes very true it can be very expensive, and doing a small section at a time you can do it at home, I'm doing n the hood next
Mad4Motors did you finish it do u have a video of it?
Perfect if you have the time and not the money, I like it
@@Mad4Motors_ Nice job! I have been working on my 1989 Mazda B2200... Funny thing is I was T-boned in an accident in 2002, the passenger door and front panel were damaged... so the door was replaced and panel painted... Well that is where most of the problems are!!! My door has rust on it, while the rest of my 30 year old truck is perfect, and I mean perfect!!! Thank you, Isabelle on Canada's West Coast.
Wow will this work on my vw beetle plastic bumpers?

Best video I've seen yet on paint repair.
I appreciate this video. I will be using your technique to prep my bumper for a wrap. I just didn’t know what grit to use in order to remove the clear coat properly.
Been a casual detailer for years, never seen anyone do a diy clearcoat repair. Excellent work man, it looks great. Wish I would have known about this a few cars back. The attitude then was 'clearcoat failure? you need a new paint job!'
Michael Curry Did you just make almost the same comment on Reddit? lol
Still a new paint job actually which is the only way to fix it but a bit more affordable which is perfect for a car that doesn't warrant taking to it to a shop.
I think thats what he did here...
splash yeah I think 'diy' is the point rather than paying hundreds or thousands.
I was thinking the same, I bought a car about 6 months ago, and the previous owner had ignored some stone chips and maybe used a pressure washer on it, and the paint is peeling (meh the car was cheap) and I was thinking I would have to pay for a complete respray. Now I've seen this video, I can probably give it a go myself for a very small fraction of the cost.
Was looking for this exact tutorial as my 99 Tercel is peeling badly on the roof. Thanks for the clear, simple instructions. Going to watch your video on the hood area now.

Thank you for posting this video. It was extremely informative and your instructions where easy to follow along with. It’s amazing to me that you where able to get the results you got using spray cans. Very impressive. I have this very same problem with my HHR SS. A shop in my area gave me a quote of 5k just to prep and spray the passenger fender and door. After watching your video I’m definitely going to give it a try. So again thank you for taking the time to make this video and explain how this repair is done. Thank you

How did it go
How'd it go?
@@ghostzzz3988 I painted it last summer and it didn't look as good as Mad4Motor's 😂 lol but it did give our 20 year old vehicle a facelift. I fixed an area on the hood. It was really hard to get a good angle and probably would have come out better if I could have painted the entire hood. Its slightly noticeable, but I just wash and wax it regularly and its not unsightly. I'd suggest anyone trying this to buy good quality spray paint and take the extra time to protect surfaces you don't want painted, even practice first. I had some overspray of clear coat and it's still a little rough there. But all in all, until I can have it done professionally I'm not mad at it.
@@mimig5843 you could just sand the overspray and polish it to fix that
Wow, that looked amazing.

Looking really good for spray can. Great job
Hell Yeah , i got a friend with a 2002 Tahoe and he wants me to do this. Thank you for going right to the point and getting it done. Great work.👍👍🏁🏁
I was a little worried at first when you put the base color on because of that orange peel, but it turned out really awesome. Nice work!
The clear will help hide that. As long as the clear has no orange peal. You see the top shiny layer.
The base coat will lay down
Yea. The base coat is going to put a thin coat over everything, and because gravity happens, the small divots even out.
Plus if you buff and polish it it'll really really help
Basecoat always looks like that when its wet. As long as it looks right when its dry your ok. If you see orange peel or even worse fish eyes or crow feet then you have to start over because you have contamination under the clear and will have to sand it out and then try again. Also make sure to use wax and grease remover before spraying anything to help avoid those problems in the first place.
Wow, well done bro. You clearly have talent, thanks for showing me how to do this properly.
If you are on a budget, then this is a good way to do it. If you don't have any time constraints you can even get a paintshop perfect result by letting the base coat dry a few days and then lightly smooth sand it with really high grit and later do the same to the clear coat with an extra step of polishing the clear coat. You can get a mirror finish with some extra time and elbow grease.
Yep, 1000g wet sanding the base coat will make it shine. All of that orange peel is killing you
I was going to ask about that. I assumed you would need to wet sand the base coat and the first clear coat with longer time between each, so thanks for clarifying. I’m assuming also that most orange peel would be removed with a wet sand. Any issues spraying 2K clear over acrylic base coat?
@@JB-qw2jk I have only ever used 2K clear on 2K paint or plain old enamel rattle can paint. I know many ppl use water based paints and then 2K clear them. It is popular with custom motorcycle helmets
