After i bought Adam Lz's old Porsche 911 992 GT3 in Florida i didnt realise how difficult it would be to find parts. Porsche in the US cannot sell you structural parts so to fix the structural damage i had to buy parts from UK Porsche and take them in my luggage. Only issue is i can't take airbags on the flight, so im hoping US Porsche will sell me them.

  • The Li-Ion battery in the Porsche (looks like it's an A123-made model) has an internal relay that opens when the battery experiences under/over-voltage and over-temp as a protection. When the relay opens due to under-voltage (as yours most likely did), the only way to get the relay to close is to apply a 12V potential across the terminals, and then proceed to apply a charging current until the battery reaches the minimum SOC to keep the relay closed (usually anywhere from 15-30% - this can be programmed to any value by the car or battery manufacturer). This is why the voltage started reading once the other 12V battery was connected to it. Modern 12V Li-Ion batteries are very smart and have many protective features; they also last about 10 years if maintained properly!

  • The lithium ion iron phosphate (LFP) battery in the new porsches goes into a self protection mode when voltage goes too low. It just needs (as you discovered) brief application of charging voltage (12-14V) from another battery to re activate, and then should be charged to around 13.4-13.6V.

    @nerdtalker2@nerdtalker2 Жыл бұрын
    • The charger is what is preventing any amps being delivered. The charger says it is unsafe to charge a dead battery, which is plausible, so essentially the donor battery is doing all the charging as it doesn't have the safety circuit and doesn't care where the power goes. The charger is then keeping the charge on the donor battery. I do it all the time with drill batteries, just link 2 wires from a donor battery to the dead battery and it will charge.

      @Christopher_T_Paul@Christopher_T_Paul Жыл бұрын

  • I've got some information for you about that lithium battery. When the voltage drops below 10,5v, there's a mechanical switch inside the battery that disconnects the internal components to protect them. When its disconnected its basically not a battery anymore, thats why it shows 0v, and also why a normal charger cant charge it. To close that switch again, you need to connect an other 12v power supply, for atleast 30 seconds. And thats basically what you did by connecting an other battery. Great job so far!👍🏻

  • Absolutely loving this! You may of found this out already now regarding the lithium battery but…the reason it appeared to be completely flat is because inside the battery casing is a control unit and switched contacts. When the charge rate drops to around 11.7 volts the contacts open to save the battery from being damaged. If you ever find this again most chargers won’t send voltage until it sees a circuit…which you won’t have when the contacts inside the battery are open. This is why when you connected the additional battery the contacts closed👌 I used to work in a Porsche Center and having to explain this everyday was a challenge haha! Keep up the great work😎 12:44

  • What I like most about your videos is your good mood! No matter how my day went, I know it will turn good when I see a new video from you. Thanks Mat! Btw: I used to have the same battery issue you faced with your Li-Ion battery, but with small AA and AAA NiMH batteries for RC: Had to trick my charger with good batteries and some tin foil into charging the dead batteries and get them back into life… 😅

To watch a guy that has never worked on a car like this and start piecing it together like you and the team do is very inspiring im not even gonna talk about the quality of editing because its beyond perfect. Makes me so happy every time i see that you dropped a new video, keep it up man these videos are golden btw hopping to see Mat Armstrong x LZ collab soon lol

  • Heyo, great video! I just wanted to say something about the li-ion cell that was deep discharged. It won’t have the same capacity like it had before. These cells don’t like being discharged that much and there’s no way to fix them sadly. It seems to work now but you might run into trouble in the future. (Idk if someone wrote that already) I love watching your videos, it’s what kinda got me into the car thing. Thank you!

  • I had same with my 992 Turbo S battery. On these if they go below 11.7v switches inside the battery activate to protect itself and in effect shut off. You can't trickle charge etc, they literally need a big shock to get them back to life. UK Porsche quoted me around £1270 to replace with a gesture of goodwill - several months on and same battery is fine and usually reads between 13.3v - 13.9v on the dash when car runs.

  • it just has to do something with your general attitude and the quality of these videos. Like I can sit and watch hours of your videos without getting bored. Even in the worst times you are always thinking positive and that just gives me morale. And all the editing and the songs you put in or the narrative are just perfect. I think these are what makes me watch your videos alot, not the cars.

  • I could watch you doing videos on a wide range of things, you're very good at this Mat, but rebuilding a Porsche 911, my all time favorite cars, is just amazing. I bought myself a 1971 911T for my 21st birthday in 1996 for $7,000, which was a lot for me! I then bought dual Weber carbs and a set of Bridgestone Potenza tires (that's what came on new Porsches at the time). I loved that car so much, but it was too expensive to maintain so I got rid of it. Now my dream car is a Singer Porsche.

  • Hi Matt - had the same battery issue just not driving my AMG GTR for 6 weeks. Battery was dead and the Lithium Iron charger would not commit to charge. New battery 3k NZD!! I looked for options. The best workaround is to put a normal charger on a standard battery and then daisy chain jumper cables to the lithium iron in the vehicle from the normal battery that you are charging. This worked to get enough power into the lithium iron battery so that when I connected the C-Tek litium charger back to the lithium battery 24 hours later it charged fully no problem. Cheers Haydn

  • Mat I jumped too 😂 when that battery jumped into the car :) I am wondering if the Lithium battery doesn’t really need a BMS to charge like you have in other Lithium batteries if it’s a multi cell one. The car probably handles that in the case. Amazing content!!

  • Great series so far, you got me as a sub. Love how you bringing in the whole family and making them smuggle parts lol Also it looks like you really like rebuilding these, it looks hard and rough but you're not afraid to start tackling it and I can only admire such mindset. It works out alot and when you hit a bump in the road you also tend to show it. And how you go about it and end up fixing it to. Like nothing can stop the project. Gonna be watching more because I've got this 335i sitting in the backyard and you spark up my motivation to get it going. So thanks for putting these out there.
