About us,
We are a family from the North-East of England following our dream to restore a beautiful abandoned french Château. We discovered the heart stopping Château De Lalacelle in summer of 2020, this beautiful architectural monument Is set in the countryside of North-West France.
The moment we visited the Château we all fell in love, from the beautiful sweeping landscape and forests, to its stunning untouched interiors and magnificent spiral staircase in the turret.
Unfortunately Château De Lalacelle has been abandoned for a number of decades so will need a lot of restoration and DIY.
Please subscribe and follow our families journey, with the up’s and down’s in moving from the UK to rural France and restoring this beautiful building to its former glory.

One of the main reasons I love watching your channel is that you don't take shortcuts. You see an issue, completely remove the problem and redo it. Cathartic!:-)
Thank you so much 🙏🙏😊
It's amazing how much repair work you find when you all look behind your walls. It makes me wonder how many other chateau owners are "Putting lipstick on a pig" when they don't open up their walls and check. You are doing it the harder but more responsible way.
Thank you very much, yes it is scary to think about 😮☺️
Hi everyone, Great decision as always Terry, I was shocked to see how the work had been left behind the wall paneling 🫢 Thank goodness you never cut corners Terry, you can now get on with the work, knowing the wall is safe! Hats off to Graham, for being there to give a helping hand to you both,Ash & Terry ! Take care lots of love 🥰💕 Take care
We are so glad we took that panels off to uncover it 😮☺️
It’s so good you decided to put in a separate shower and had to remove the door because you found the barely supported brick wall. Now you can have peace of mind. I love your always positive attitudes. And happy to hear that you’re friends with Patrick and Stuart. I love watching them and love the way they’re restoring their chateau. Makes me happy knowing you’re all friends!!! xx
Thank you so much
I'm subscribed to both your channel and Stuart & Patrick's channel. Thank you for giving them a shout out to boost their viewers. It truly is a blessing that you changed your minds about the shower as it led to your discovering the previous workmanship that was jeopardizing the château's structural integrity. The work you are doing to restore it will make it possible to survive another 100 years.
Thank you so much Nanci :) they’re wonderful people :) 😊
You two fellas and the rest of your family along with your extended family of help are just the most likeable and without attitude people. Your progress is just amazing!!
Thank you so much ☺️
Your family and Patrick and Stuart are my favourite restorers and decorators. I love your styles and the fact that you are not trying to replicate Buckingham Palace. You both show so much class. ❤❤
Thank you so much Desire! 🥰🥰
Good lad for wearing a hard hat
Thanks Kath 😊
I'd follow Journey to the Chateau, but I already am! I follow about 20-30 different French properties. I finally mapped them out in Google Maps to see how close they are, especially since many of you make appearances on each other's channels. I love it. I've given up regular TV for KZhead!
Thank you so much ☺️
Oh, the sight of those bricks hanging in air!! I'm so glad it's been sorted, and no one was injured in the process! You all do such great work, and I know it will be lovely when you're finished. Thanks for the excitement!
Thank you ☺️
Patrick and Stewart are a real lovely watch. They are both very talented and have done amazing work on their chateau in such a short time. Thank you both for giving them a shout out!
Kudos for Graham. He's such a tremendous help, and it's lovely to watch him work with both Terry and Ash. My dad was like that, he also just pitched in when something needed doing. As much as I love the paneling, I do think using it elsewhere (the main salon?) is an excellent choice. And now that you've removed it from this bathroom, I think things will move along very quickly. Thanks for the update!
Thank you so much ☺️
I love following you in your journey, the attention to detail and sympathetic restoration. You have a keensensitivity to what makes sense to keep "authentic", what makes sense to adapt, when something new makes sense (that wonderful kithen you just finished is a perfect example!), and a "can do" attitude. I love Patrick and Stuart! They are just terrific! Thanks for giving them a thumbs up!
Thank you so much ☺️
Is Graham family? There are new people I don’t recognize.
Ash, you are privileged to work alongside your dear Papa.❤👨👦
I absolutely am Penny! I’m grateful for everything he does for us! 😊
Hallo. I am following you for quite a time. I admire the way you were able to restore the chateau in an elegant, respectful full way, still made out of it the most livable place for inhabitants. Let me explain, it is a wonderful, historical, contemporarily restoration I ever experienced. It is not a wonderful, sterile one, it is also “human”. Thank you.
Thank you very much 🥰
💕It’s better to find the flaws now than have problems after you’ve spent money decorating & making it look nice💕
It really is 🥰
As someone who has had a lifelong interest in historic houses and their restoration and a retired carpenter l am amazed at the differences in the way European and American houses are constructed. Here in the US l never see brick in interior partition walls. They are almost always wood frame partitions with lath and plaster in older homes. I would think brick partitions would add a lot of extra weight on supporting structures below.
Absolutely they do Bryan. We’ve managed to take out quite a few of them already that aren’t supporting walls, just to take off the load on the floors below! Hopefully, what we’re doing will mean she will stand for another few hundred years! 😊
Didn’t they use brick as a fire break because of all the wood? Also I believe it was a cheaply made alternative at the time.
@@ashleywaters7198 It is amazing the things you guys accomplish. I wish l had your energy, but at 66 l am slowing down and doing repairs and projects gets harder every year. I look forward to your posts each week.
@@machellep1 Yes...there is a difference between a house and a castle!
Watching you all makes me happy! Thank you so much for sharing your lives and work!
Thank You Melainie
Tracey, you are so awesome!
I love the idea of making an arched entry into the shower. When I saw the brick falling like that, I was horrified! Honestly... Thank goodness you found it now!
Thank you ☺️
Good to see you wearing a hard hat for that part. Unlike crazy Dan. I wish all the chateau restorers would do an intervention and present him with hard hat and proper scaffolding.
I love the separate shower idea as well as the water safe wall board. All great decisions today!
Thank you ☺️
Good thing you found that flaw. So, it's not as bad a disaster as could have been.
I know was good to find it out
You are just magic and so generous towards Stuart and Patrick. I think they are super too. Thank you.
Thank you. They’re lovely guys 😊😊
Don't forget most women prefer flexible shower head when planning your new shower! With wonderful chandelier and cornicing this room will still look great despite losing panelling. Are you installing dual fuel towel rails? As your doing electrics from scratch it is nice to be able to heat towels when central heating is off. Have you cooked roast in new kitchen yet? Would love to see you cooking meal for yourselves and enjoying using room.😊
I’m sure I’m wrong, but it appears that nothing gets you down. All of you have an incredible work ethic and your attitude is so incredibly positive. Your channel is so pleasant to watch. Thank you for creating such wonderful content.
They come from my part of the world shelley hard work is in their blood .
Ashes Dad deserves the first week in that suite! 😁🤔👍🏽
He does! He’s amazing. Thank Jan 😊
Thank You
Thank you for uplifting me today. I watch many Chateau channels and there was sad news on Chateau Chronicles so as always, watching you gentlemen raises my spirits. I am so glad that you found the failing wall...that was an accident waiting to happen. Looking forward to seeing a bit of restoration on the facade of the Chateau (shutters?) and maybe some more discoveries ❤.
We are looking forward to cleaning the front :)
Oh my word you boys are amazing plus your family who help u out. Why would anyone want to watch TV when this family are so great to watch.
Thank you so much ☺️
Thank goodness you took off those panels. Looks like it should now. Great job
Well done everyone! A great save fixing that support wall. Ash is right in saying it’s better to strip a room back to allow repairs before completing the area with insulation, plumbing and electrical work. The job is done properly then and you know what’s behind each wall and surface. It also reduces problems into the future and having to duplicate work already done. Can’t wait for the second floor to be completed over the rest of 2023. 🥰🥰 And yes, I’m a big fan of Patrick and Stuart as well! Subscribe everyone!
Thank you ☺️
I absolutely love you guys, your family AND Patrick and Stuart!!!! I look forward to your videos every week!
Thank you ☺️
OMG, I don’t know how you aren’t just overwhelmed by your disastrous discoveries⁉️ Keep up that positive, you are doing a fabulous job‼️🤩
Thank you ☺️
Loving the chateau journey restoration Safety always comes first and y’all have a clean slate to design an amazing bathroom God bless Love from West Central Texas 💜
Thank you ☺️
Kindness Honesty pours out of you all! Can’t wait to see how beautiful this washroom will end up being Lots of love❤
Thank you so much ☺️
Exciting progress and timely repairs to something that COULD have been a disaster! Well done chaps! I especially enjoyed Terry and Ash chatting from two adjoining “frames” at the end.
Thank you ☺️
Lots of comments today, but you’re very good workmen. That’s a great job on that wall!
The more comments, the better for Ashley. 😉✊👍
Your so right ,Ash, that you need to take things back to the shell and start new. Im glad your philosophy about cleaning the exterior is not to make it new looking. Really awesome podcast.
Thank you so much ☺️
Love watching the details of your restoration. Definitely takes patience to make sure everything is done properly. Patrick & Stuart, Journey to the Chateau, is my other favorite channel! Y’all doing a great job. ❤️
Thank you so much Susan 😊😊
@@ashleywaters7198 you’re very welcome. WE WILL visit your chateau one day. Hopefully before y’all have completely restored it.
I can't believe they never put a lintel over the doorway to support everything above. How dangerous! I also agree with another comment and would never use a bath in an hotel either. A beautiful big shower would be my choice.
Thank you 😊😊
Thank you, I couldn’t figure out what had caused it. 😂😂❤️👍
I tend to shower, but if you have young children, a tub is a must.
I don’t have children but, I do have a very large Tom cat and a very slender long and tall Arwen. She rules our home. She’s not even 3 yet.😉😂❤️
That brick work was scary. 😮
It was and glad we uncovered it
I use coconut oil for shining up wooden surfaces, after a few applications brings out the beauty. That’s the beauty of keeping odd pieces of wood.❤🎉
Thank goodness you decided to take the paneling out or you wouldn't have found the dangerous wall and it didn't look as if it could have held much longer. You really have to wonder how stupid the previous people were to just knock a hole through a support wall and not fit a lintle but expect a couple of pieces of paneling and some thin ply to hold a brick wall and another floor above it safely 😮
It know it is crazy to think about
Thanks
Guys this Guys this Guys this
Guys this, gays this, guys…😉✊👍
“They cut a hole though the 18th panelling” brilliant Terry obsolete classic 😂 love Graham in the nicest possible way Graham does remind me of Berwick Kaler he too is a legend of course just like Graham, chateau amazing ❤
Incomprehensible that the former owners could be so reckless with the structural integrity. Thank goodness you uncovered the collapse. Haha way ahead of you: LOVE Patrick and Stuart!!!
It was scary to find, but glad we did ☺️
Since that is a supporting wall, might be worth repointing the whole wall to strengthen it
Thank you ☺️
Request: Is it possible to have more lingering shots of the walls, paneling, bricks, floors, etc as you're narrating? As a lover of architecture it's easy to appreciate all the work you all do!
We will 🥰
Your energy it’s boundless and amazing well done boys well done
Thanks Cherry 😊
Please use cement board and not the green Sheetrock. Put the paint on pink rubber stuff over the cement board and it really protects everything from water intrusion.
Thank you ☺️
Love how your family works together so well.
Thank you ☺️
I hope that isn't cement all over the bricks because that could be leading to their decay. Bricks and stone needs to breathe and hopefully it's a lime plaster. Great work on fixing it!
Love the video. Lol, I have found myself using some of the idioms I have heard y’all say. “Crack on” is one of my favorites. Get busy just doesn’t seem to carry the same verbal weight.
Get busy might mean something different in parts of the UK. 😉😂👍
@@jimmyconnolly3461 isn’t it funny how phrases have totally different meanings dependent on region?
@@joannabowers1358 I know. What’s a fanny where you are?😉🤦♂️😎❤️
@@jimmyconnolly3461 here in Texas, it’s someone’s butt. If we’re sore, we’re all stove up. Y’all is how we try to pluralize the already plural “you.”
@@joannabowers1358 you can google what it means in the UK. 😉🤦♂️😂
Job well done you three miracle workers. Graham you help and advice is priceless. Would you ever want to come and live at the chateau one day Graham, there must be a little corner somewhere where you could have a cosy place of your own.
Thank you ☺️
Interesting fact: only 4% of people choose the bathtub vs. the shower, according to a UK survey (probably the same ratio here in the USA).
Thanks Christiana 😊
I love my bath, I never use a shower if I can help it.Most people I know use both depending on time.Maybe the survey was down south😂
At least there will be no hidden nasties in that room. All done properly by you guys.👍 Can't wait to see the progress 😁 take care all. Jan xx👍🥰
Thank you ☺️
A favorite quote of mine is....."an arrow has to be pulled backwards first before it goes forward ", Ashley said the room had to go backwards, made me think of the quote. Good progress on this room, you have a plan, it's all good. We'll done guys! 💙🌿💙
Great saying! Haven’t heard that one before.
What a great job shoring up that wall! 😊
Such a good thing you found that collapsed area!
Absolutely 💯 goodness knows what would have happened otherwise 😊😊
Everything is coming right along. Thank goodness you check in the details so you can see the concerns!!! 😀🎶❤️
Thanks Kerry-Lynn. Good job we did! 😊😊
Brilliant work restoring that brick wall!! It looks nice and strong now.
I love disasters though, not all of them. 😉❤️😘
New name Jimmy? 😂😂
Do you like my name, Ashley? 😂😂
Oh my , I'm so glad you removed the panelling, wow that could have been a huge problem in a few years. I'm glad you don't skimp over and fix the issues properly... now this will be sturdy and a beautiful Bathroom 😂❤ ... love my Chateau familes 😊
Thank you ☺️
Wow, that was a good catch, it could've gotten really ugly had you not discovered the damage...doing it right the first time just makes sense...so exciting seeing the old relic from the inside out and I just love the old finish on the exterior, she is grand in her blemished state, I so appreciate that you guys see it too...as time marches on...quittin' time for me too...CHEERS...!
It know, it was quite scary 😧
The lesson here is always look under the panelling, just in case. This has saved you a lot of money. Imagine if the doorway had collapsed and taken part of the third floor with it. Good job that Terry and Ash are slender.
Yes we have uncover so many problems behind them 😮
Good job guys . And yes Patrick and Stuart are coming along with their chateau watch them all the time. Patrick reminds me of my cousin Han’s such a big boy and very tall . Anyway see you next week. Find any other treasures. Don’t forget to show us . Light a candle 🕯️ on Anzac Day for the fallen .
Great job, will be beautiful
"Yay", I was so happy to see more of the 400 room work being done. You guys make it look so easy. Love your videos, much love from Oklahoma USA Jackie 🇺🇸💖
Thank you ☺️
What a lot of work for you all. Im sure, like all your projects , you will get it done. You will have peace of mind knowing you've put it back safely. Love from County Durham xxx
Thank you Glenys 😊😊
As always quality workmanship, so glad you found that problem with the brick wall. Love from Canada
Thank you so much ☺️
Totally agree with the stand alone shower wish I’d done it ❤
It is a good decision to make at this point :)
Soo sorry this happened to you. Thankfully you will correct the previous owners errors. You are great workers. Always enjoy & am inspired by your family. Bravo👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Thank You Flo
Thank you so much 😊😊
Hello to the hardest working family EVER! So excited to watch as this transformation happens. I absolutely L❤VE watching, but... you open telling us the plan. We watch the plan as it happens. You take a break to recap the last few minutes we watched. Work on the plan again. Break & recap. Work ends then recap everything we just watched. 😉 This granny loves watching! I wish I could come help, or join Patron. ❤
Thank you so so much 🙏🥰🥰
My goodness, what a chore to strip the bathroom! There’s no other way around it ,however 🥴 It’s going to make it easier to plan ahead now!
Thank you ☺️
love you guys..............truly.
Opening up a wall when renovating can reveal a multitude of problems but for you it’s a thousand times worse 🙏😬🤦♀️😅❤ Good job, guys 👷
Thank you 😊😊
Just when things were going so smoothly and well, hope it's not a big disaster x
Hopefully not Donna
You were lucky with that wall! Good thing you caught it!
Well done team, so look forward to end result🔨🪜🇦🇺🦘
Thank you ☺️
Oh I would take down the wood panelling and replace it with water resistant drywall. Save that panelling for other rooms. Have fun. ❤❤🎉🎉
I've got to call out the use of a wood lintel supporting all that brick over a shower stall. Because of the humidity in the bathroom and season humidity in the stone wall, I absolutely must advise you replace the wood with a concrete lintel. That is far too much weight suspended above an open shower stall to use wood.
Invite sent over to your Chanel by Terry and Ash , hi from Australia 🐨🥰
Thank you, hope you find journey to the chateau 🥰
Opps stuffed that upn🫢😂
So glad you’re taking the panelling down in the bathroom. Beautiful as it is, it isn’t practical in a bathroom, and of course that was a very lucky move discovering that weak wall.
Brilliant Job well done, it was lucky you changed your mind about where the shower was going. 😊 x
It really was! Thanks Anita 😊
It very good y'all changed your mind and found the structural problems now and can prevent a disastrous problem later. I like that you're adding a separate shower, not everyone can climb into a tub as you know, so it makes sense. It's wonderful that Grahm is there to help, such a wonderful asset🥰! I'm a bit excited to see the outside cleaned up🤗, Y'all have made great progress! Thanks for the referral to @JourneytotheChateau, I'll subscribe now and start watching once I catch up to date here.💓 LOL, Beer/ Gin o'clock, love it!
LOL, I'm already subscribed to Patrick & Stuart, you must've previously mentioned them.🍻
Good evening I can’t wait to see what you are all up too
Death and destruction in the bath? nope, just peace of mind. Not looking for click bait, just interested in your journey.
No death in the bath, just it was a great problem and was lucky to find it out 😊
Hi guys! Wow Terry that was a lot of work. You have a fresh canvas to work with. I appreciate how much integrity you put in to your restorations. You don't try and half ass anything. I certainly appreciate all your videos. Thankyou for taking us along for the ride. I'll say bye for now and I'll catch you on the next one. ❤

Good bit of structural engineering going on to save the soundness of a supporting wall! You did uncover a mess, but made the most of a bad situation. Kudos! Thanks for bringing us along. ❤️🏰
Thank you 🙏 😊
Terry, watch that window… might fall in like the other one in the gentlemen room.
Thanks Penny. This window is new and is fixed in better 😊
You are all so positive, turning unexpected setbacks into opportunities to make the château even more beautiful, functional, and safe. Great job!
Excellent work, guys. Since I'm planning on staying in one of the rooms someday, I'd rather not have any loose bricks tumbling down... LOL.
😂 yea its not something you would want 😧
Thank god that you’re the owners now. At least it will be restored with care and love. If it could smile it would. ❤️
Great job, lads! I love your tenacious and pragmatic natures.
Thanks Geoff 😊
I can't believe how much you all have accomplished in a short time really. Well done all of you. Great family❤
