We hear anywhere from 10 to 200 lies a day. And although we’ve spent much of our history coming up with ways to detect these lies by tracking physiological changes in their tellers, these methods have proved unreliable. Is there a more direct approach? Noah Zandan uses some famous examples of lying to illustrate how we might use communications science to analyze the lies themselves.

Excellent video. When we suspect a lie, I suggest we don't call it out directly, but instead call attention to the person's own role/self in the story, and ask for more details to see if they trip up. Assume good intent, but also trust your gut.

I do this weird thing where I smile when I tell the truth (and the other person thinks I'm lying). Only because I find it funny how they think I'm lying. It's really annoying when they say "You're smiling, which means you're lying"
They always do that, and they always think they are right. But when the actual answer comes along, I was telling the truth. But they never learn
Me haha tbh its funny when they dont believe you . i thought i was the only one with this
For me it was: "You're smiling while asleep so you aren't actually sleeping."

"Above all do not lie to yourself. The man who lies to himself and listens to his own lies comes to a point that he will not distinguish the truth within him or around him, so he will lose all respect to himself and to the others, as a result he ceases to love" Fyodor Dostoyevsky
that sounds like a lie, given the lack of first-person pronouns and convoluted expression of a simple idea.
@@ihategooglesomuch Dostoevsky was a novelist, and in this quote, he was speaking about a character in his novel, a man. The most dangerous lie is when the liars don't realise they're lying to themselves.
If you earnestly believe it then it's true
Ikr
hurts different
I think the most dangerous lie is the one that hurts people. I read, " lying lips hates those that it hurts." Therefore, if a person tells a lie that hurts an individual, the person is basically saying, he/she hates you.
They're called psychological liers
I can say with confidence that this did not just teach me how to lie more effectively.
not really self reference complicated message has negative words such as "not" i conclude that this is a lie XD
You're lying lol
Ah yes a honest statement right here, I do not sense anything deceiving about it.
This video definitely taught me how to catch a liar
I smell lies. Or wait, that’s my lies.
My favorite way to learn a lie is to ask someone else to ask the liar the same question, like for example I had a coworker who lied time to time, and she told me she was in the hospital so couldn't come in, but when someone else asked why she didn't come in, she told a completely different story to them because her comfort level was different with them
this taught me to be better at knowing when others are lying, how to be better at lying and how to be better at making obvious lies for comedic purposes
We've all told this lie: "Sorry miss, I did my homework, but left it at home"
and if the teacher wants it tommorow, u just do it that day and u are good, plus u put last day's data
I love how we're explaining the process of us lying to our teacher
Not me
But it is frustrating that you actually do your homework and left it at home but the teacher doesn't believe you lol

The biggest flag I’ve seen when catching a liar, is if you bring something up to the person, and they deny it, and you act like you believe them and let it go, and then they act unnaturally upbeat and kinder than they usually are, that’s a big sign they were lying, and think they got away with the lie, and now they’re being overly nice because a: they’re happy they got away with their lie, and B: they’re still trying to trick you into believing their lie. Example: a cheater is being questioned by their spouse. The cheater isn’t usually over affectionate or romantic, but you accused them of cheating, and they came up with an excuse like “I had to work overtime” or “I was out with my buddies” and the girl is like “you’re right, I’m just over reacting” And then suddenly they’re like “it’s ok babe, I understand, you don’t need to worry, let’s cuddle xoxo” And they’re uncharacteristically being romantic and attentive. It may seem sweet, but in reality, if someone who wasn’t cheating were suddenly accused of it, they’d instinctively get mad or at least irritated. To the younger people here, look out for this ✋🏻
Thanks, this really helped me improve my lying skills👍
Here's a pro tip: when you tell the truth, tell it like that's a lie. When people realise that you tell the truth, they will assume that it's just how you speak. So, when you tell a lie, people still assume that you speak the truth.
Until one day you wake up and don't know which is the truth and which is the lie.
That's very clever deception. Have you been doing it long?

Let me break it up to you: there is no consensus of when a person is lying. You either assume people don’t lie or assume people are always lying. You just never really know a stranger. It may be easier with friends/family because of patterns but even then you can never really be sure. Good book to read about lying is “talking to strangers”

hah, that's where you're wrong, I use a method where I check possible combinations of words that won't trip me and psychologically makes sense in their head to the point where I need 5 seconds to process the next line of words(random facts, this is why my name is gen because I tend to use how other people think and use it against them hehe >:) simplified: overthinking things without anxiety

If they are skilled enough they might be able to avoid that, or they can just say your asking to much questions and make you look bad
@@yespapa8102 The object isn't to interrogate. Besides, you might not know you're talking to a liar, so bombarding them with questions isn't what you'd be doing. The fact remains that nobody's capable of sustaining a lie for any length of time... they will say something completely contradictory to an earlier statement, because it's impossible to construct a wholly fictitious universe on the spur of the moment. That's why liars keep their relationships superficial.

The problem is that when someone tells a difficult truth, or one that seems unlikely, it will sound exactly as if they are lying according to this video. Stuff like using complicated language or not directly referencing yourself can indicate that whoever is saying it is nervous, and they would be nervous if they were telling a lie or telling a difficult truth.
|Innovation| if it's difficult, we will know that.
the video is pseudo-science, if there were ways to tell lies beyond actually discovering the truth we would surely all do that because learning of the truth through investigation can be quite difficult at times.
We also use complicated language, like the statements described in this video, in order to reduce uncertainty and prevent misunderstandings or misconstruction.
|Innovation| my brain hurts
ThePyromania13 Agree
So to make your lies sound more truthful: 1. Self reference more 2. No negative language 3. Complex explanations 4. Simple phrasing
Never let the truth get in the way with a good story
in other words you can make a lie look more believable by: - using first person pronouns - simple phrasing - positive language
So... building a complex, realistic narrative, but in simple words, using first person pronouns, and without negative words. Got it.
And the irony is that every politician says such things every election, and after they are in office the lie becomes obvious. And yet everyone keeps voting them in.
Yep, and Trump has it down to a science. That's what years of practice will do for you.
Or by making sure your emotions fit the lie your trying to make people believe.
When you speak, speak clearly, concisely, and confidently. No matter the content of what you're saying, it's an effective rule of thumb.
