Australia vs Facebook and Google - what's the row about? - BBC News
People have been responding to Facebook blocking its users in Australia from sharing news, in response to a proposed law which would make technology companies pay for news content on their platform.
The Australian Prime Minister, Scott Morrison, said his government will not be intimidated by Facebook, describing the move to “unfriend Australia" as arrogant and disappointing.
Users found the Facebook pages of all local and global news sites unavailable, and several government health and emergency pages were also blocked. Facebook later asserted this was a mistake and many of these pages are now back online.
Both Google and Facebook have fought the law, saying it unfairly "penalises" their platforms.
However, in contrast to Facebook, Google has in recent days signed payment deals with major Australian media outlets.

They don't have to give notice, you could still get all the information and news just with a few extra clicks by going to sites directly, just not being spoon fed. If I heard the government were trying to charge my business for something or were probably going too in the near future I would stop it overnight, especially if they were talking about the possibility of forced arbitration if the 2 sides couldn't agree and hadn't been clear about what the new rules would be.

They use Facebook as a platform to promote themselves and get traffic to their own sites where they make money on these people coming to them from Facebook. I have a feeling that charging for linked to content was tried in Germany a few years back. People stopped linking to newspaper content. It ended with the newspapers begging people to link to their pages because they were losing to much revenue. As for Facebook I have never used it.

They didn't want money for links but the 2 lines of preview that you see under search results headlines and Google still showed the headline link but not the 2 line snippets and that was already enough for the traffic to the news sites to plunge

Oh be quite the world nearly stopped when Google services went down two months ago. I remember businesses lost millions of pounds and some couldn’t even do their work.
I'm loving the lack of news in my feed so far 🙂 I use Facebook to talk to people who share my hobby and keep in touch with friends and family. As a result, it's one of the few places where I like the advertisements I get because I'm actually interested in them. If I want to see news, I'll go to a news website, turn on my TV or buy a newspaper/magazine.

Facebook has such a huge userbase that anything less than having a government block its use entirely or limiting the service isn't going to affect it at all. It's naive to think that a few thousand, or even tens of thousands, people deleting (not deactivating) their accounts and not making new ones in the future will make enough of a difference for Facebook to change their policies.

Here's what: If newspapers don't like it, they can go back to selling their stories at the newsstand. It's mutually beneficial - Facebook shares the news, papers get to reach a wider audience and get to be read by people all across the globe. No one has to pay anyone.
Yet Facebook earns a lot of money by this. They sell the data gathering from people reading those news articles to advertisement firms. So they earn the money and the journalist/news sites dont earn anything. Except the knowledge people are reading their articles for free.

In Australia, TV, Newspaper and radio pay licensing fees to broadcast news. Google and Facebook have had a free ride so far.
But Facebook is not a news platform. News channels are the one getting a free ride since users clicking on the link might gain them subscriptions. Facebook is for connecting with friends.

I am an Australia and I think Facebook has become more pleasant for me since the news ban. When I want to read news I can access it is other ways.

I read National newspapers online for free. They ask me to make a small donation. I just laugh at them. I haven't bought a newspaper for years. I have to put up with unwanted advertisements. I just ignore them.

I've gotta side on FB with this. This new government rule is completely unfair for independent creators. Essentially big media has failed to catch up with the times so as a result they want to change the rules to suite them. Also social media didn't ask for this content on their platforms so if the option is pay an extortionate amount for it or remove it of course they will remove it.
