The Woman Behind Google’s $2.7 Billion Fine (HBO)
VICE News was given exclusive access on the day as EU Competition Commissioner Margrethe Vestager announced a record breaking antitrust fine against tech giant Google. It’s not the first time Vestager has taken on a large company, having previously forced Apple, Facebook and Intel to pay up.
Speaking to Aditya Chakrabortty, she told him why she feels her work at the Commission is a battle for fairness on behalf of Europe’s 500 million consumers and how she came to her decision on Google.

Who is watching on KZhead(owned by Google) ?
actually they moved their ownership now to protect themselves and other smaller companies e.g. youtube
@Jordan Chong - sources? And how does that mean Google does not own this platform?
with ad block
Google search ALPHABET lol ironic
Dude, your fucking farts are owned by Google.
if only America stood up to it's companies like this.
Radioactive Snake lol never, its become the social norm to be ass fucked on the daily by these companies and still ask for more, they have such a chokehold on the politics and culture that even when they "stand up" to these companies the companies only pay pennies compared to the overwhelming wealth they possess and I love my country I really do but money here decides who's licking who's ass
Radioactive Snake EU commission doesn't answer to lobbyist
Radioactive Snake ** Trump
Radioactive Snake stand up? Stand up against what? Google encouraging the use of their own products in their own service? Woah. Such crimes. Unbelievable, how dare they!
Google is operating and is being taxed as a marketplace. They broke the rules. Have you ever seen a store for example like lidl, walmart, aldi, tesco, target that *didn't sell competitors products?*.
Very few here understand the impossibly high barriers of entry made by google to stop competition from entering the market
Finally someone with a valid comment! I salute you sir and the 32 other people who can see what consequences this could lead to.
+kimserne not everyone has a functional brain... and not everyone cares that they don't have one. can't blame the majority of people, that's why they are easy to control and manipulate, it's a good thing in a sense.
barriers made high by the extremely ingenious and effective technology and algorithms that google has created and employed?
by this logic companies shouldn't strive to be the best or be innovative...might lead to too much of an advantage!!! give me a break
All markets can become contestable in the long run. In the short term we would all be at a head loss but in the end someone will always fill the void that's kind of the beauty of free markets and innovation. I would argue the only market Google has extreme dominance is the search engine stuff. Everything else can be replaced by another firm.
To all the Americans: If you want to have your company operate in the EU, you have to obey the law. Period.
@Jake HIRO yeah lol Google can just stop selling their products in a 23 trillion dollar economy like the EU.
@@chair2411 Yeah, cut of a 470 million customer marked, right. That is the last thing Google are doing.
Why does the reporter ask why she does it? She is the EU competition Commissioner, its her job????????
Politicians usually do a better job if they come to work with a different view other than "It's my job"
Near monopoly? It IS a monopoly.
Killacamfoo O.G. Bing and Yahoo do exist, so it's not a complete monopoly.
You call that a monopoly? Look at Rupert Murdoch
Anonymous wow..you have no idea why Google is fined ....just do a quick search and you will see, it's not for its search engine but for another branch of their company "google shopping" I think but I don't remember clearly. That's suggests you sites/stores to visit with good prices to buy the items you are searching. The problem with all this is that google favored some sites that they had interest in from others. So..they showed you first the sites they earned more money from. THIS didn't happen for the search engine BUT for the google shopping option!! Don't get confused.
Killacamfoo O.G. monopoly? What country do you live in? There is an entire array of free search engines. Every service provided by Google someone else also offers. If you don't like Google than GET OFF KZhead, stop using Chrome, and use something else.
+Aleksandr you missed the point, please read and understand the specific arguments for the fine.
that middle finger statue LMAO
Bravo! The greedy corporations have to know their place!
"It's a fuckfinger" WOW THAT WENT FROM 0 TO 100 REAL FAST
0:34 the way he says Margrethe Vestager😂 Where my danes at
We need people like her in the US.
Why do we need her? Obviously this was done for publicity, I think google has the right to do whatever they want with their service/software. If you agree with her. why don't you just use yahoo or some other alternative search engine?
You probaly think what the FCC is doing is great too...
basically all about her feelings and what she feels/thinks is just
I hope you all see this as a commentary on Net Neutrality as well. If you don't like seeing certain websites being promoted unfairly, imagine your ISP having the power to throttle or manipulate your access to the internet.
What is the music name they use in the background?
The best part was when he tried to say Margrethe Vestager :'D
Honestly just came to see how they pronounced her name and see how they talked about Denmark and well, both were satisfying
kredit til dig Rebecca HAHAH
I think Vestager would quite like being called "the resident dragonslayer". Thats one badass woman
why dont they charge Tv networks for promoting their own shows
because TV networks don't have monopolies.
great work !
Interesting how KZhead didn't put an ad on this video.
she has a huge office because she's very valuable for the EU commission when they ar running low on funds they just ask her to sue some company..
Boy did they slay the pronunciation of Margrethe Vestager's name
I don't see the fuzz, it's just her job and she's doing it well, you wouldn't ask the bus driver why he/she is driving a bus, it's self explanatory. Wonderful that big corporations are being held accountable and how many people fx in Ireland who benefited from those billions, instead of some greedy google employer.
Residential " Dragon Slayer" ....... that's a cool nickname...
That lady is going to get a nice paycheck.
Mr. Wolf Usually Politicians do so, but as there is no Company that makes money by Google paying taxes, idk what you are thinking of
Thought a sick trap beat would drop at 2:47..
Tell me this: Would you advertise some competition on your website? It's THEIR website, they can put whatever tf they want to put on there. They are NOT legally obliged to even list other business. Be happy that those services are even on page 4...
abhineet they are legally obliged to. Before writing things from your mind you can always do a quick search and see by yourself
Nah they ARE. Have you even read google terms and conditions? Google could remove any business off their site at will. They've had their share of disputes with amazon on a similar matter! Do your research!
On one point I can understand why it would be illegal but then again, it's THEIR own site and they should be allowed to do with it what they want
never would I think I'd see the day where people defend bigger than big corporations... Sickening.
Radioactive Snake never thought I'd see the day where people defend thieving bureaucracy... sickening
FundaiX, Antitrust laws are an essential part of free market economies. They prohibit misuse of dominant market position. The same rules exist in the US. How can anyone defend monopolies that unfairly crushes competition? This is not thieving bureaucracy. This is upholding the law. Failing to do so is what is causing distrust in the institutions and distrust in the political leaders for sharing a bed money with big corporations.
Google doesn't have a monopoly on the search engine market though. There are dozens, if not over a hundred, competitors. I for example use DuckDuckGo almost exclusively. In fact, this might serve to further crush the free market by disallowing googles competitors to offer the same services to themselves and their partners. Also, i the past quasi-monopolies such as My Space were disrupted naturally and with the best results for consumers. Besides all that, Google operates no more of a monopoly than Purdy's does for only selling their own chocolates. Just because they are better at marketing, bigger and more succesful, does not mean they have to host their competitors stock, and in fact Google goes a step further and will serve you the links to their competitors if you ask. So how is this a monopoly? And if they aren't a monopoly, how is this ruling anything but taxation by other means? (Also the point of my comment wasn't to defend monopolies or to say the EU WAS a thieving bureaucracy, but to point out how ridiculous it is to chalk people who disagree with you as simply "sickening" without first qualifying anything about them. There's nothing wrong with defending big corporations... If what you're defending is true. Yhe point of the argument is to unveil that truth, not to simply jump to the idea that big corporations are indefensible under all circumstances)
rezargamer no, because US has different law logic on monopoly, if google doesnt interfere you to make your own search engine, you are not a monopoly. Ordinary people still can make search engine and throw it to internet without google preventing them. This case is much much different from Standard Oil case where they will buyout oil well and refinery then manipulate the market through many ways so people cannot start their own oil company, oil well or refinery easily Since internet is accessible easily, and you can create your own search engine freely, the entry level barrier is so low. Thus make it impossible to put google in anti trust law in US. Moreover, it's Google's website, it is their property and Intellectual Property, US has strong IP and property rights law and usage Meanwhile in EU, same logic isnt there because different law and law culture (EU civil vs US common law).
rezargamer You're just going to take what Vice said for granted and assume that the government was "exhausted" rather than have up because it was going to lose?
I think what most people don't realise, is that what they're doing is against EU regulations. Yes, Google should be able to do whatever on their own platform, as long as it's within the laws and regulations in each of he countries the operate in.
This is why one always comparison shops. If Google ends up having the best prices then so be it.
Did Apple end up paying? or only some of the 14.5 bill? I did not understand that part?
That's how search engines work. They always optimize their own ads/businesses. If you wanna be on the first page, but the ad.
Our manager is not gonna be happy about this. Lol
Private companies shouldn't be forced to advertise other companies products before theirs
Holy shit that lady looks resilient and like a war commander or some shit
great job.
Margarethe vestager..she is honest...brave...the most Amazing woman i never seen !
0:32 The way he pronouces Magrethe Vestager XD
2:55 BOI!!! Margrethe Vestager IS SAVAGE AF!!!
Bet she has wild Dominatrix sex
Margrethe Vestager is a disgusting person. Actually EU is disgusting in general to be fair.
Sekgo Guessing you're a Trump supporter?
SANKOFA X lol, i have always thought the same thing.
" its not only for them because its always there :D"
She's using the seatbelt the wrong way, lmao
A bit more of background to the problem would have made it a better video. obviously the solution according to her would be to separate the search and advertising which would mean customers have to pay for Google services as the advertising is how they fund Google search and other Google services. On a side note why is she wearing the seatbelt in a peculiar way? Do not the EU laws apply to her?
Europe needs to read Atlas Shrugged
I hope people understand the importance of what she is doing. Google and Apple are so big that we need controls like this. They are so big that they can be pushy towards whole countries and get their will.
I just googled "sneakers" like they did in this vid and google doesnt even sell shoes them selves. Like they dont package them, put them in a box, and ship them to you. They simply connect you to the people that DO. Im sure they get a cut but its less than pennies on the dollar. I mean for real this seems pretty back asswards to me.
Wish she would take on Luxottica and it's price fixing. Maybe she only takes on American companies.
cute lady in the mirror 2:52 flicking her hair
2:16 - How does this make Google break a law? They are showing a comparison. Many websites do this and not a single one was fined other than Google. 2:46 - Just more 100% legal comparisons. And she kept talking about "What _they_ did" but never specified what was done. Just that they were using their own website to show comparisons of various other services while moving what people are proven to be interested in towards the top. That's not illegal in any defined ruling in The European Union or any of its' member countries(that I can find).
its weird that ordinary people defend a multi billion dollar company even though its pretty clear they violated law.
Pls check the same for UBER pricing also.
Where are my Bengalis at? Proud to see you here Chakrabortty!
shes got the i wanna see your manager haircut
i cant believe people actually discuss this topic, it's their search engine they can display which ever information they want. Google isn't a market place for other companies. It's their platform, if you want to compare shopping price you can do that by yourself.
She should definitely Google "how to wear a seat belt".
You're wearing the seatbelt wrong
She works for the government to fine private businesses on interpreted laws...wow she's so talented.
She works on very big cases that will most likely influence the outcome of cases like them in the future, so yeah, pretty important.
i just hope she did this for society and not as an opportunist desiring money. its also important for google to have a contingency plan to prevent this from happening again.
Talk about getting the right person for the right job....
How did this happen??? I would just counter sue the whole EU union.
Don't be fooled by a lawyer coming off as a hero.
Damn she went HAM 😂😋. She went after APPLE sooo hard
Use Ecosia :)
I'm glad that they got fined, but I would have levied a much larger fine to such a horrendous company for their horrific and unlawful actions Google can't be trusted to be fair!
If she can win against Amazon then I'll be impressed.
I see this videos didn't violated any "community guidelines"
this lawsuit is complete BS. Google's Shopping pages is not a "comparison shopping" platform. you submit your products to google, and you paid for them to show up in results. its a massive ads page. if you do not pay, your listings do not show. I run a small e-commerce business and I'm able to out bid h&m, asos and other big retailers on Google shopping and get sales. I really don't understand why they think Google should allow anyone to show up in these results.
This is why Europe doesn't have their own Google, or Apple, or Facebook, or Twitter. Keep it up Europe!
Speaking like Europe is one big country...
First of all we have a lot more than social media platforms and iPhones. We have so many diverse companies. And second of all in the beginning of the video they showed us that you Americans tried to sue Google aswell but couldn't success so this shows us Europeans how weak you really are
The interviewer has a very similar style as Ezra Klein from Vox.
Whatever happened to Google's motto "don't be evil"?? Evidently they put concrete shoes on it and threw it in the ocean.
Am I missing something here? Google Shopping results are paid ad results. If you don't like a brand, company or a product then don't use it.
Damn... I was about to say she looks like a danish politician until I found out it was the same person
Is it the company's fault that they are monopolizing a market if they do not actively or inactively try to prevent newcomers to the market?
use a different search site? idk why this is an issue
After this video, I feel a total waste of space. What a legend she is!
The real version of Claire Underwood
It is a weird case.. Most people use Google because it is one of or if not the best search engine there is, so in that regard they bring a very good product to the market. Also, I do not know of them actively stomping out other search engine services, so It is difficult to say that they are evil. So unless the law of a state very precisely states that "a search engine cannot give preference to their own products over competing products" then they haven't done anything wrong. It is almost like saying that if you own a supermarket you cannot give preference to your own products over competing products. I honestly think it is better for the government to educate its people on these basic economic realities (I would assume that people are already aware of this). As far as I know Google does not require its EU customers a payment to use their service and thus they are funded by their advertising. So, these actions on a multinational company like that would only prompt them to pull out their efforts and investments from places that does not bring them a higher rate of return and allocate them elsewhere. Ultimately making money is their priority and if people think that they can use such services without a cost, they are misled.
but it's their search engine...
EU tax system is different then USA tax system! In USA you can cut corners and avoid taxes, in EU not so much everyone has to pay taxes including American’s
McDonald''s sells coffee too meanwhile Starbucks sells sandwiches as well.
Ah, A Scandinavian, if only we made the rules, Google would be taxed into oblivion.
I really don't get it. Google is a company, not a government organization. So, if you search for something on their shopping search and it shows you first the companies that they have "ties" with, whats the matter? If they want they could literally ONLY show the companies they're interested in. It's like if someone has a blog and post about sneakers he likes, but he only posts about nike sneakers, will she knock on his door and tell him to talk about all the brands? He is not obligated to talk about others. And thats not even the case with google shopping. So if some record label signs some new singer now he has to sign EVERY singer??? They can show anything they want, its google's website, not EU govern website. WTF
awesome human!
I don't understand how Google has to promote other websites on its own website that's like forcing bmw to promote teslw
Stolt af at have en politiker som Marianne Vestager i Danmark!
WTF google makes sneakers? They must be doing a bad job as this is the first I heard of it.
But can google turn Water into Wine?
Wish America had someone with the guts to take on corporate thieves.
Very good that Google received this fine and justice was served. However, it shoud be admitted that, especially for such a large company, Google is quite ethical and consumer-friendly. They care about what their customers want, they care about the happiness of their employees, they're leaders in terms of innovation and global progression, and genuinely try to make people's lives better (e.g. by projects such as Project Loon). I don't think Google deserves to be portrayed as a vile, wholly greedy company. If you disagree, I'd love to hear your arguments.
Did Ireland ever receive 14.5 billion dollars from Apple?
why does that car have two seatbelts? asking the real questions here
Do you mean the middle seat seatbelt ?...the central console lifts up for a 5th passenger.
The danish lady uses English far better than the interviewer......
im just wondering how much they're paying her
Difference is, here in America. Opposing lawyers know it's just a game. They parry and foil with each other like honorable duelists in the daytime then, at the end of the day, like common conniving thieves, they get together for an expensive dinner to compare notes on how much money they each made for their day's efforts.
Ain't that the truth. America actually tried the exact same thing as the EU several years ago, and of course Google were allowed to settle the case for a couple of million dollars, peanuts.
I don't agree with monopolies , but if your going to do this to someone as big as google, THEN WHY NOT EVERYONE ELSE!
Isn't Google allowed to do anything they want with their own site?
If in her country everyone is paid similarly due to taxes and she just brought home the bacon from google in court, then is she like mom to them? lol
Margrethe the real MVP
Isn't it kinda ironic that this video is on KZhead?
"Don't be Evil"
well i just hope i have to pay less taxes but thats a dream that will never become true
