The Woman Behind Google’s $2.7 Billion Fine (HBO)

2017 ж. 27 Мау.
340 704 Рет қаралды

VICE News was given exclusive access on the day as EU Competition Commissioner Margrethe Vestager announced a record breaking antitrust fine against tech giant Google. It’s not the first time Vestager has taken on a large company, having previously forced Apple, Facebook and Intel to pay up.
Speaking to Aditya Chakrabortty, she told him why she feels her work at the Commission is a battle for fairness on behalf of Europe’s 500 million consumers and how she came to her decision on Google.

In the short term we would all be at a head loss but in the end someone will always fill the void that's kind of the beauty of free markets and innovation. I would argue the only market Google has extreme dominance is the search engine stuff. Everything else can be replaced by another firm.

That's suggests you sites/stores to visit with good prices to buy the items you are searching. The problem with all this is that google favored some sites that they had interest in from others. So..they showed you first the sites they earned more money from. THIS didn't happen for the search engine BUT for the google shopping option!! Don't get confused.

    • FundaiX, Antitrust laws are an essential part of free market economies. They prohibit misuse of dominant market position. The same rules exist in the US. How can anyone defend monopolies that unfairly crushes competition? This is not thieving bureaucracy. This is upholding the law. Failing to do so is what is causing distrust in the institutions and distrust in the political leaders for sharing a bed money with big corporations.

      @jesperlett@jesperlett6 жыл бұрын
    • Google doesn't have a monopoly on the search engine market though. There are dozens, if not over a hundred, competitors. I for example use DuckDuckGo almost exclusively. In fact, this might serve to further crush the free market by disallowing googles competitors to offer the same services to themselves and their partners. Also, i the past quasi-monopolies such as My Space were disrupted naturally and with the best results for consumers. Besides all that, Google operates no more of a monopoly than Purdy's does for only selling their own chocolates. Just because they are better at marketing, bigger and more succesful, does not mean they have to host their competitors stock, and in fact Google goes a step further and will serve you the links to their competitors if you ask. So how is this a monopoly? And if they aren't a monopoly, how is this ruling anything but taxation by other means? (Also the point of my comment wasn't to defend monopolies or to say the EU WAS a thieving bureaucracy, but to point out how ridiculous it is to chalk people who disagree with you as simply "sickening" without first qualifying anything about them. There's nothing wrong with defending big corporations... If what you're defending is true. Yhe point of the argument is to unveil that truth, not to simply jump to the idea that big corporations are indefensible under all circumstances)

      @FundaiX@FundaiX6 жыл бұрын
    • rezargamer no, because US has different law logic on monopoly, if google doesnt interfere you to make your own search engine, you are not a monopoly. Ordinary people still can make search engine and throw it to internet without google preventing them. This case is much much different from Standard Oil case where they will buyout oil well and refinery then manipulate the market through many ways so people cannot start their own oil company, oil well or refinery easily Since internet is accessible easily, and you can create your own search engine freely, the entry level barrier is so low. Thus make it impossible to put google in anti trust law in US. Moreover, it's Google's website, it is their property and Intellectual Property, US has strong IP and property rights law and usage Meanwhile in EU, same logic isnt there because different law and law culture (EU civil vs US common law).

And she kept talking about "What _they_ did" but never specified what was done. Just that they were using their own website to show comparisons of various other services while moving what people are proven to be interested in towards the top. That's not illegal in any defined ruling in The European Union or any of its' member countries(that I can find).

  • It is a weird case.. Most people use Google because it is one of or if not the best search engine there is, so in that regard they bring a very good product to the market. Also, I do not know of them actively stomping out other search engine services, so It is difficult to say that they are evil. So unless the law of a state very precisely states that "a search engine cannot give preference to their own products over competing products" then they haven't done anything wrong. It is almost like saying that if you own a supermarket you cannot give preference to your own products over competing products. I honestly think it is better for the government to educate its people on these basic economic realities (I would assume that people are already aware of this). As far as I know Google does not require its EU customers a payment to use their service and thus they are funded by their advertising. So, these actions on a multinational company like that would only prompt them to pull out their efforts and investments from places that does not bring them a higher rate of return and allocate them elsewhere. Ultimately making money is their priority and if people think that they can use such services without a cost, they are misled.

So, if you search for something on their shopping search and it shows you first the companies that they have "ties" with, whats the matter? If they want they could literally ONLY show the companies they're interested in. It's like if someone has a blog and post about sneakers he likes, but he only posts about nike sneakers, will she knock on his door and tell him to talk about all the brands? He is not obligated to talk about others. And thats not even the case with google shopping. So if some record label signs some new singer now he has to sign EVERY singer??? They can show anything they want, its google's website, not EU govern website. WTF

  • Very good that Google received this fine and justice was served. However, it shoud be admitted that, especially for such a large company, Google is quite ethical and consumer-friendly. They care about what their customers want, they care about the happiness of their employees, they're leaders in terms of innovation and global progression, and genuinely try to make people's lives better (e.g. by projects such as Project Loon). I don't think Google deserves to be portrayed as a vile, wholly greedy company. If you disagree, I'd love to hear your arguments.

  • Difference is, here in America. Opposing lawyers know it's just a game. They parry and foil with each other like honorable duelists in the daytime then, at the end of the day, like common conniving thieves, they get together for an expensive dinner to compare notes on how much money they each made for their day's efforts.

    • Ain't that the truth. America actually tried the exact same thing as the EU several years ago, and of course Google were allowed to settle the case for a couple of million dollars, peanuts.
