I'm 48 years old. I watched this show religiously as a kid. I have the entire series and TV movies on DVD. I always found this to be David's most heart breaking moment, to be so close to a cure and yet to be denied. Bill Bixby's performance in this scene is masterful. You can't help but feel so bad for him. It moves me every time I see it.
I heard that! And that episode The Psychic when he thought the hulk had killed someone.
I’m 50 same here 👏🏾💚👏🏾
I'm 46 and watched this show with my older brother as a kid. I still love this show and watch the old episodes every now and then.
My favorite sci-fy show to this very day and I am 44. I have the entire series on DVD. This scene is the most epic transformation scene in the entire series.
Even as an adult, the story holds up. Special effects are what they are, but if they could bring this show back without CGI and do it justice, that would be epic.
Bill Bixby is to the Hulk what Christopher Reeve is to Superman, they raised the bar so high that it's hard for another actor to reach.
Or Lynda Carter to Wonder Woman.
So true. Christopher Reeve was our Superman.. not Brandon routh or Henry cavill or anybody else. Plus how full of life he was then his accident n then death in 2004… Lynda is wonder woman .. plus Batman kind of a special character so ppl real particular over who plays him. Michael Keaton, Val Kilmer, George Clooney.. then dark knight movies w Christian bale… Batman is Ben affleck 😪😪😪.. might’ve had Matt Damon as robin ☹️
Agreed
@wiiliamhamilton147 yes!!!
Facts!
The best scene in the entire show. I loved how David realized what was gonna happen and he knew he was gonna turn but he held it in long enough to let himself cry. Such an amazing choice to make for the character. Probably the one time where the transformation was triggered by sadness and not anger. Bill Bixby was truly INCREDIBLE.
Yes he was, probably my favorite actor of all time. His acting really made me feel for him & felt like it was real.
I cried as well
Even the Hulk didn't seem to know why he was "invited". Took some time to warm up.
Keep in mind part of that hulk-out was from fear. He could've gotten hit by that needle, injecting air in his veins and possibly killing him. Though maybe not with a hulk-out.
@@fabiogams Banner's hulk was MUCH stronger
Bill Bixby was robbed of an Emmy nomination, for this scene.
I love it when the Banner Hulk finally snaps out of his grief and starts beating up Dell Hulk like he's nothing
ABSOLUTELY RIGHT!HULK SMASH!
I like it when the Hulk at first has such a docile expression on his face, as he's regarding the Frye creature in front of him, but then after the creature knocks him into some machinery, throws a chair at him and misses, and then grabs him and shoves him crashing into some other machinery, the Hulk suddenly roars at him like he's saying, "OH, YOU WANNA PLAY, HUH?!!!"😂
Probably the first - and possibly only - time that The Hulk “woke up” and wasn’t angry.
How Bill Bixby did not win an Emmy for this role is beyond me?! He should have been nominated for this episode and Married from Season 2! He truly was incredible!
HE SHOULD HAVE WON AT LEAST FOUR EMMYS ALONE!!

100% but also must be nothed they didnt put green paint on the bad hulks armpits and on the bad hulks shirt you can Lou's green paint lol
Yeah, there were a lot of moments like that. Like in the episode with David’s dad… David turns into the Hulk right in front of his dad and the dad tells the Hulk to run (before the cops come) but the Hulk gets emotional and doesn’t want to leave his dad’s side but does tearfully.
Incredible, the hands of the skillful sculptor, I will definitely make a video about sculpting hulk using sand and cement, stay tuned!
Bill Bixby (God rest his soul) was a superb actor. He makes you feel the moment.
This was actually, IMO, the best Hulk-Out in the entire series - one of the few that is triggered by adrenaline, not just pain. When Banner realizes that he has lost his last chance for a cure, we see the eyes, and a full 2 minutes passed before he fully transforms. We see the horror in Banner, the tears in his eyes -- Banner knows he has lost, and it may be Bill Bixby's finest acting in the series. Then, the Hulk fully manifests, and he is not angry because Banner wasn't. For the first time, Hulk sees someone who looks just like him. Hulk can only stare at this new creature, not truly understanding what he sees. And then the other creature starts whaling on Hulk - for no reason, as far as Hulk is concerned. It takes several minutes for Hulk to really get angry and start defending himself. Hulk even has tears in HIS eyes. That's well done. But when you see the two of them together, you see Lou's so well developed body, and Dick Durock as Frye's creature just has his size working for him in this scene. He's not as muscular as Lou, and it shows. Good fight scene, but we know Lou would have kicked his ass.
Hulk SMASH puny... hulk? It's pretty obvious here that Banner's Hulk is stronger than The First. Plus he seems to have better regeneration, as the Hulk was shot before and healed back from it quickly.
well, Del’s Hulk was much older, and he was shot 3 times repeatedly. Plus, the regeneration only happens during the state of transformation( we see this all the time with David). So if Del’s hulk had turned back into Del before dying, then the regeneration would healed the wounds and he might have survived
Well written
Yes so cool the way Banner's hulk is all confused and sad at first, then just goes all out rage and throws skinny hulk all over the room.
@@Dhampir101980 it's not the transformation that triggers the regeneration, it's the Hulk-State itself. However, when David was shot, is was always in the arm or shoulder, not point blank in the chest...

I’d personally take Edwards Nortons portrayal more. At least his Hulk wasn’t tainted by Disney’s Marvel takeover. He was there when the MCU wasn’t so childish

I think this was one of the best scenes in the whole run of the show. Bixby was so good and truly made me feel so sad for Banner.
I can never get enough of David's expression at 1:07 when he sees Dell Frye start to transform. He finally sees what turning into the Hulk looks like from someone else's perspective, it's like he's thinking "Is THIS what happens to me when I change?". The show might have never used the Abomination, but Dell Frye's Creature was definitely the closest thing to it. Plus it finally allowed for Hulk to fight someone his own size (or I guess his own strength) instead of tossing objects/people 10 feet in the air like every other episode. And also at 4:55, I love that detail of how when Hulk finally gets angry instead of curiously staring at Dell Frye, Dell Frye's hit doesn't even push him back compared to how he was throwing him around just a few minutes ago when he was still dazed at seeing another Hulk-like creature.
this is the second time he saw frye turn not the first.
That's right because he also saw him change in Part 1 of this episode.
If I recall correctly, this is the first time that the Hulk saw him. Previously it was Banner that saw him.

Evil Hulk is Dick Durrock who played Swamp Thing. He scared me when I was a kid. I thought he was a werewolf
A series with emotional impact. It's the exploration of a hero character made at its finest. No hundreds of explosions one after the other, no empty and exaggerated battling, effects or CGI. Human emotions mixed within the essence of what a fantastic hero is: incredible, but not futile. No stupid punchlines to make teenagers shiver here and there, nor simply an "action guy". At the end, it's really just " a guy". This show is one of the best hero adaptations for such reasons. It has real depth and it's a real piece of art. The credits song still makes the heart feel the character's pain to this day.
3:09 Oh my God you can feel his pain. So close to being rid of the Hulk. Years on the run because of one arrogant mistake just within reach of ending. But because of this ignorant, dangerous monster, those dreams shattered as easily as that needle. Somebody has an ass kickin coming.
Then there would be no hulk

Just to not see that pain in his eyes, I probably would have been ok with no hulk….lol. that was pure heartbreaking.
The performance by Bill Bixby in this episode was amazing!
Definitely, one of the very TOP episodes of the series and one of my favorites! I put it with "Married", "The Psychic" and "Prometheus" as the best of the series. It really scared me the first time I saw it as a young kid and has always fascinated me. The reason that Frye's Creature was thinner and not as muscular as the Hulk was because Dell Frye was a LOT older than David, as well as he took a LOT less of a dose of gamma radiation than David had given to himself. Dell's radiation came directly from the sun, where David's came from a machine that controlled the amount given. They chose Dick Durock because of his height when he stood next to Lou, and he looked REALLY creepy in that makeup...
I totally agree, I wanted David and Dell Frye, to be cured, but you know what I wanted the two monsters to fight.
@@ericdejesus7072 Based on what Jason Briggs said the "evil" Hulk was LESS strong than the regular hulk. From a literary standpoint it would have been cooler if Evil Hulk was stronger or at least about equal with a really big bodybuilder for him, maybe Arnold Schwarzenegger?

One of if not the most emotionally powerful episodes and scenes in the series. Banner's anguish over the loss of the cure is so real, Bixby completely convinces you he's David Bruce Banner falling into despair over the loss of a proven cure for his condition. The different music to set it off is also important, it's just too bad we don't get to see an all-out brawl between the two of them and it's mostly smashing stuff (that explodes with electrical sparks even when it has no electricity).
This was TV everyone tuned in for, and it was glorious. Sure, by today's standards it would seem corny but back in the 80s it was perfection. You actually felt Dr Banner's emotional journey (through Bill Bixby's excellent acting) as he wrestled with the "monster within" - we haven't seen that kind of emotive experience since (with perhaps Ed Norton's iteration) - we get loads of "Hulk" but very little of the man with whom he resides within - miss those TV days (as all people who get old do hahaha!)

Those days were awesome and Friday night tv was incredible for sure. Back then families got together and watched tv on Friday nights and this show definitely was on just about every tv in America. I miss those days
Back then it was badass but with heart, we felt for Dr. Banner and he looked like a real hulk instead of today's CGI fake looking , no emotions bs.

Way too many comments to read through and this may well have been said. The brilliance of this episode is that David turned into the Hulk because of his rage that the serum had been destroyed. Usually when the Hulk appears there is a fairly straight forward goal for him to accomplish. Break free, defend himself, save someone, etc. Dale's Hulk actually understood that the syringe in some way was bad for him. In this case though it would be "recreate serum to prevent future transformation based on a technology we don't understand." Not the Hulk's strength. I think that is why the Hulk is just confused at first. Then bad Hulk starts wailing on him and it takes a minute to redirect. Once he refocuses, he takes over the situation. David is younger and in better health than Dale so it not surprising that his version of the Hulk would ultimately be superior. I do like that there are very different body types between the Hulks just as in people. Great job by Ferrigno and Bixby.
Bill Bixby throughout this brilliant sequence, shows what an incredibly talented Actor he was..

The greatest Hulk transformation in history due to the emotional complexity of it and the delaying of the inevitable Hulk transformation. You can really feel David banner's pain as everything he has ever worked for is in his grasp and it was destroyed as he watched helplessly. A very creative thing they did was make the Hulk a little bit smaller when he was sad and then when he got angry he got a little bigger. That was cool!
This episode scared me so much as a kid.
This is one of the very best episodes of The Incredible Hulk. I also like the episode where Banner gets stuck midway transforming from himself into the Hulk.
"Prometheus". The season 4 opener.
Yes one of my favorites, I remember being scared for him
"Prometheus", another outstanding two-part story in this series. Those really were the best episodes: the pilot movie, "A Death In The Family", "Married", "Mystery Man", "The First' and "Prometheus".
In pretty much every show, David touched the lives of everybody he came in contact with. He was incredibly kind and compassionate and always thinking of others before himself. Still, he could not have accomplished all that he did had it not been for the Hulk. The Hulk saved his life repeatedly and was able to do so much that David couldn't. I wish the final show could have shown David come to terms with the fact that he was the Hulk and embrace being the Hulk instead of trying to find a "cure". He could have continued on in life as a "Superhero" as opposed to a drifter. Each time a show ended that showed David hitchhiking into the unknown, and leaving people that loved him, it always made me sad. I remember thinking "he's all alone again". That's a bit sad for kids to see over and over again.
That would have been a good resolution, he could have learned to embrace his alter ego but keeping with the down to earth aspect of this show, he wanted a normal life.
That's what what we call drama, or tragedy. It has more power than comedy or pure action. That's why we remember so well this show.
It's difficult it embrace what you've become if the creature you become cannot be controlled or aware of it;s actions, so I understand why David is struggling to find a cure, not only for himself but for anyone around him.
I remember when i first saw this episode as a kid i felt so bad for Banner, and it still hits hard when i watch it again now as an adult
This and the Prometheus two part series were two of my favorite episodes. The Prometheus meteor radiation had caused him to not fully change back to Banner. He had both half Banner and Hulk mind-frames.
yeah that Prometheus two part was another favorite for me as well.
Yeah that one was awesome, I read once that there were not 2 but 3 actors who portrayed Hulk, of course it was Bill and Lou but there was also another actor who was a friend of Lou who once went with him as a guest and when one of the producers saw him he said that it was like if Lou and Bill have had a child as he looked like Bill but he was stronger and yet not as much as Lou, and from that moment on they hired him to add some "middle" takes of the transformation, he always appeared briefly in the transformations until the Prometheus chapter were he was able to appear on screen for a full episode. Although the close ups were all Bill Bixby´s he was able to have some fun finally breaking some stuff.
Bad Hulk is the stuff nightmares are made of.
What an iconic show I remember watching every episode ❤
I think this may have been the only time in the series Banner's transformation was triggered by emotional anguish instead of physical pain or frustration. A great performance by Bill Bixby
I remember watching this when it first aired. I was 4 years old, and the scene where Dell dies with his eyes open really confused me. I asked my mother why it happened that way, and she simply said, “Honey, sometimes people die and their eyes are still open.” I’ll never forget that.

That Would Have Given Any Kid A Nightmare!
As bad hulk arms above head, right leg bent. As Dell Frye arms by his sides, both legs straight.
I never understood why the bad Hulk looked like a wacked out Jerry Reed or Chuck Conner, instead of being muscle bound like the Hulk. Bixby was so good in this role.

There was another episode where David thought the Hulk had killed someone and he starts to cry. I didn’t appreciate how honest and genuine his grief was until I had enough life experience to know that type of pain and the emotional response. Later, I read about how his son had died tragically and his marriage subsequently fell apart. I’m convinced he relived this pain when he wanted to “act” in these scenes.
You're talking about the episode "the Psychic" where David was with a woman named Annie, she was actually played by Bill's first ex wife and it was when they were going through a divorce.
@@jeremyknight9980 Actually Right About Bill Bixby And His First Ex-wife Brenda Benet RIP 🙏 🕊 ☮ 😌 ☹️ 😔!
Omg what a blast from the past! This episode scared the crap out of 4 yr old me 😂
That Evil Hulk always reminded me of Frankenstein.
Bill Bixby was such a underrated actor.
It was more like skinny tall Hulk versus regular Hulk. I almost never missed this show on Friday nights on CBS. I was in my early teens and took flack from my parents as it was one of the first live action superhero shows. It's now years later and I collect television, movie and comic book memorabilia. I think it's funny how much things have changed and this type of thing is more mainstream. Who's laughing now? Oh by the way I have actually met Lou Ferrigno several times and he is just awesome to talk to.
4:20 damn that was a truly strenght demostration from Hulk, ln of his feats definitely
Best Performance From Bill And Lou..These Were The BEST Days Of The Finest Television
When I saw this as a kid, the Dell Hulk creeped me out to no end! He was flippin nightmare fuel!!! Lol
Damn that crying scene was/still a powerful scene.....RIP Bill Bixby
RIP...
You would think they would have found another body builder to play the Evil Hulk.
it’s the Jackal (Prof. Miles Warren) another one of Spidey’s green mad scientist out for revenge 😮😮😮
This is the sort of attention to character detail you hardly ever see in the current spate of factory line Marvel movies. The circumstances of Banner's transformation here are different from what we've previously seen up to now. This time, his metamorphosis is triggered by sorrow as much as anger, and as a result, the Hulk doesn't emerge raging as he normally does. Instead, he looks confused and disorientated, almost like the wind was knocked out of him.
My favorite episode of the series, bar none!
I watched every episode as A kid in the 80s!
They were fun
Man my brother ruined this for me when we were kids, called the bad hulk the Phyllis Diller Hulk, I couldn't unsee it
There is a resemblance now that you mention it.
This is a very powerful scene when I first saw it and still today. RIP Bill Bixby.
The bad hulk scared the hell out of me when I was a kid, I wish they made good shows like this nowadays
Lol :)
Well, this was a pleasant surprise. The acting by Bill Bixby in here was very good, and having Dick Durock being the evil Hulk was a nice cherry on top since I remember him as another green monster in Swamp Thing.
Creepy looking hulk man. This was great TV 👍🏽
This was my favourite episode too a really great show i watched without fail every Saturday night. Bill BIxby's performance throughout the show was so empathic. To feel the lonliness and depression and isolation he was going through was tear jerking. To be so close to a cure and it get's ripped away by the Bad Hulk gets me every time. The way the show ended with David's death was the most weepy moment next to this scene
Definitely a stellar 2-parter. The tracks of Banner's tears still on the Hulk (best seen around 4:18) was a subtle and powerful touch.
Glad someone posted this epic scene again! Best episode by far of the series with Prometheus also a fave of mine. Yes, Bill's acting is just incredible the moment he starts yelling NOOOO! Elizabeth's facial expressions as David starts to turn are spot on. I remember seeing this as a kid and having to wait a week for part 2 to see the two hulks fight. Such great writing.
This is the end of part 2.
While I still love the episode, ANY Hulk being killed by gunfire is simply absurd.
@@xaviervega468 why? It's established in the series that any HULK is *not* invulnerable.
While I love this episode I have to disagree. The best episode for me in the entire show is the pilot. Frankly I think it’s one of the best TV pilots ever written.
Prometheus was my favorite episode. Loved that one for so many reasons.
These two episodes scared the crap outta me when I was a little kid! That bad hulk was wild! Great memories!
This was the hulk we needed in infinity war
Bana hulk wouldve thrown this one in the Pacific Ocean 💀
Bill Bixby was such a great actor! What a great performance by him in this scene! 👍🏾
This never gets old!!! Especially this episode!!! 😎
With today's special effects 2 Hulks fighting each other would turn a large city into a pile of scrap as opposed to just that one room in the house ahahahahah.
@@Zurround this is actually the only episode that Hulk fights with a super villain. In the other episodes he fights with normal human villains.
@@user-ub5xj5nb7l Would have been neat if he had had to fight the RED HULK or ABOMINATION. Lou Ferrigno made 4th place in the 1977 World's Strongest Man contest. The 3 men who beat him would make great super villains for him.
I totally agree 100 percent. This series will never get old for me.
@@user-ub5xj5nb7l That's very true, and I'm glad he fought another creature.
