The Beatles - Hey Jude

The Beatles performing “Hey Jude.”
Hey Jude topped the charts in Britain for two weeks and for 9 weeks in America, where it became The Beatles longest-running No.1 in the US singles chart as well as the single with the longest running time.
The Beatles did not record their promotional film until Hey Jude had been on sale in America for a week. They returned to Twickenham Film Studio, using director Michael Lindsay-Hogg who had worked with them on Paperback Writer and Rain. Earlier still, Lindsay-Hogg had directed episodes of Ready Steady Go! And a few months after the film for Hey Jude he made The Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus TV special that featured John and Yoko but wouldn’t be shown until 1996
To help with the filming an audience of around 300 local people, as well as some of the fans that gathered regularly outside Abbey Road Studios were brought in for the song’s finale. Their presence had an unlikely upside for The Beatles in their long-running saga with the Musicians’ Union in that the MU were fooled into believing the band were playing live, when in fact they were miming for the vast majority of the song. Paul, however, sang live throughout the song.
The video was first broadcast on David Frost’s Frost On Sunday show, four days after it was filmed. At that point transmission was in black and white although the promo was originally shot in colour. It was first aired in America a month later on 6 October 1968, on The Smotheres Brothers Comedy Hour.

  • When I'm 64... Well, now I am. Been listening to The Beatles since I was a little kid, thanks to my older brother (RIP Joe). I remember crying as a 10 year old when I heard the band broke up, my mom consoling me, telling me that they would make music forever, and of course, their influence is still going strong. On occasion, I watch this video, and start tearing up about halfway through, and I'm balling when they get to the 'na, na, nas...' How did four guys have so much influence on me, the world, and how so many of us think and feel? Watching this is both incredibly wonderful and sad at the same time, reminding me of the beauty of their music, but also of the challenges we now face as a people. Ultimately, however, I'll keep smiling, as long as I have these songs to warm my heart :)

From Wikipedia: In a 1980 interview, Lennon stated that he "always heard it as a song to me" and contended that, on one level, McCartney was giving his blessing to Lennon and Ono's relationship, while, on another, he was disappointed to be usurped as Lennon's friend and creative partner.

You were made to go out and get her. The minute you let her under your skin, Then you begin to make it better. And anytime you feel the pain, hey Jude, refrain, Don't carry the world upon your shoulders. For well you know that it's a fool who plays it cool By making his world a little colder. Hey Jude, don't let me down. You have found her, now go and get her. Remember to let her into your heart, Then you can start to make it better. So let it out and let it in, hey Jude, begin, You're waiting for someone to perform with. And don't you know that it's just you, hey Jude, you'll do, The movement you need is on your shoulder. Hey Jude, don't make it bad. Take a sad song and make it better. Remember to let her under your skin, Then you'll begin to make it Better better better better better better, oh. • I was recently interviewing for a job in KC. I was a stranger in a strange land, a little nervous , a little out of place and alone. I stopped in a coffee shop to get some Jo and gather myself before I went before the man. There were a smattering of customers about mostly single, unremarkable folk. It was raining which happened to be the first good rain wed seen in the region in sometime. Honestly, I was a bit lost looking for the beginning of the next chapter of my life. Then this song came on and I began to softly sing it to myself as a self soothing attempt of which id become quite adept at over the last 5 years. Then a single older lady a few tables away joined in. Then a man sitting on a live seat then another and another. Nobody was trying to hard. It was sublime. I left after I was done and we all exchanged smiles, nods and waves. I nailed the interview and got the job. Sir Paul is an extraordinary talent. He is a gift to Humanity and his grace and compassion and talent set me at ease and gave me a boost that wasn't originally there. What a song. The Beatles.......wow. P.S. True Story

    • The story about Hey Jude is probably more complicated ... I think. When John left his wife and child for Yoko Ono, Paul McCartney visited John's ex-wife and son Julian Lennon to check on how they were coping ... Thats when he came up with idea to write a song to comfort Julian. Here's where things get a bit blurry ... Paul said in interview that he later changed the lyrics to make it not specifically about Julian but braoden it to be about the everyman ..... (he changed the name Jules to Jude, and added in a part about encouraging Jude to pursue a girl ) .... Paul said he wanted to broaden the song's appeal. Well, the real reason is probably something else.... I think Paul must have changed the lyrics to avoid giving the impression to John that he's meddling with John's family affairs by trying to comfort Julian about John's divorce .... who knows, John may react angrily seeing it as a criticism about his own infidelity ..... but of course Paul would not say that openly, its quite easy to see the real reason why he had to change the lyrics to be openly comforting Julian ... I'm not sure at which point John would know that the song was originally meant for, his son Julian Lennon, but he eventually knew. I hope this helps to clarify some listeners's confusiion with the lyrics, on one hand people know its written to comfort Julian, but finds it weird that the lyrics talks about chasing a girl instead when Julian was only 3-5 yo at that point ...

  • Ringo singing along without a microphone to sing into always gets me at 5:38. He's the best. You can just see it in the Get Back sessions. He's the glue that held them together, and it's made even more apparent that this video was taken JUST as he returned to the band after Paul criticized his drumming. Such a good dude. He's the perfect band mate for a popular band when the highest of egos are involved. He just wants to jam out, he doesn't want to bicker. He genuinely enjoyed the music that the other 3 wrote. You can see it in this video.

  • I remember sitting in the back seat of my girlfriends parents vehicle when this song was playing on the radio. It was the first night that I had met her parents and we hit it off immediately. They took me home after a high school football game. It was in September 1968 and I was lucky enough to stay friends with Di’s family the rest of my life. Sadly, Di passed away from cancer two years ago. After her funeral, the undertaker opened the back of the hearse so I could sit next to Di’s casket. I spent about 30 minutes with her and I felt lucky to have been able to tell her how much that she had meant to me. Rest In Peace Babe.
