I think my favorite thing is how every verse is sad. Some of its obvious like the bartender who thinks he could make it in hollywood if he could get out of this place, but then you get subtle stuff like how paul is a real estate novelist. Thats not a thing. Thats the kind of thing you say to a guy at the bar to pretend to be someone successful. And being in the navy for life isnt automatically a bad thing, but you can tell he is a life long deck swabber, not a guy staying in there as he moves up the ladder and becomes an admiral or something. Just all of it, the closest thing they have to being happy is getting drunk and losing themselves to a good melody for a few minutes. And the song itself is melancholy in lyrical form.

It's more about dreamers in NYC killing time in a piano bar in a Saturday night. Joel worked in one to pay his bills because he signed away his royalties for rent money. I made more money on my first two books than he did for his first eight years of albums.

Don't judge, we were both kids and tired as hell hours before; it was NOT Billy's fault. I awoke halfway through this song. And I'll never forget it. BJ's Moscow concert was one of the only CDs that survived our house being broken into back in 1990 and I still have it. My favorite version of Goodnight Saigon.
