This is one of the greatest movies of all time. And it's so slept on.
It's the best film I ever watched in terms of watching it and realising the game as it unfolded, of course they buried it

This movie n fight club, they shaped me. I took the quote - 'embrace the pain n you will win this game' n ran with it... litreally, i fought myself because i was weak. I started running, not to become good at it, but to test my will... n soon i started running ultras.. i ran 100+ km races at height more than 10,000+ feet height, ran 100 miler race.. not quite done, want to run 200 miler races n so on...

Helped me get over a shitty relationship, of which I was just as much the problem as the other one was; only because we each had egos for who could be better, who could be most feared, more insulted. We'd insult each other with every ounce of arrogance and evil there was able to be said, to somebody you're supposed to love. I finally said fuck it, I'm tired of hearing the voice in my head that controls my every action, forcing me to tell him how much of a piece of shit he was, knowing that I was just expecting only the same lowly attitude back. Little do we all know, that this applies to every nerve wrecking situation we enter, on a daily routine - wanting to prove how much of a special snowflake we are... letting emotion overtake knowledge, allowing logic to overcome our common sense plastered right in front of our faces, only because we dwell on such frivolous reaction. Getting hurt by a simple mind game that we all know is anonymously, but blatantly existing. Ego.

Here he now realises that he is not really in control and that the rules hes been following all along are in fact being used against him. He realises that avi has been playing him all along by letting jake win. The rule is you let your opponent think your dumber and he is smarter. Avi plays dum and jake plays smart, while in the chess game jake plays dumb and feeds avi his pieces while avi plays smart and loses. Its a funny cross mix of whats happening in the chess game and outside the chess game. Do you know why i say that because the last chess game they play, avi finally wins.
I've had this too in the last 2 months. It's weird. Everything suddenly became much more clearer to me. The outside world looked "real" again. I've had this feeling for the last years that I'm in a cell and the bars are these extremely negative thoughts about others and me.

One way to look at "Ego" is as a mental construct, a system of beliefs/rules for perceiving and functioning in the world. Kind of like a product of socialization - newborn baby is taught how to behave and act in order to integrate them in the society. A child learns to identify with the name that their parent's call them. The child identifies with "I", which is from subjective perspective is a foreign construct that they've learned to identify with, without questioning the practicality of such an identification (let alone the validity of it). In a way, child never has a choice to be aware of making a choice. I wonder why our society is not geared toward examining the self, and connection between the ego and the self...

This is a very esoteric movie
One can not simply part with the ego. You can only be aware of it. Stop and think about the decisions you make and you might realize you're not the one really making the decisions.

I walked up on my enemy the other day and repeated exactly what Green said to Ray Liotta at the end this movie. My enemy looked at me TERRIFIED at first, like the end of MATRIX 3 when AGENT SMITH thought Neo was tricking him. After I said "Take it easy", he stood their looking confused as hell, like when NEO jumped in AGENT SMITH, in Matrix 1. I walked off feeling like a million dollars. He stood there looking confused.

@just1believer aaah i see the idea that is explained.. But let me tell you the reality to clear this up for you. Your ego is everything about you. Ego (your name) thinks he is what he has/what he has done/his personality/his life situation/his job...you know the deal.. That is the ego - the sense of real self. Fact is, research has been done and there is actually no ego. It is a mindmade concept that we develope as we grow up depending on what others say about us. Beyond ego is pure awareness.

The Ego is a necessary part of the human psyche. Destroying it destroys a very vital part of ourselves or represses it. We cannot kill the ego.
We shouldn't not kill it.We should keep it under our control every time Ego wants to control us
Alot of people make a big confusion with this. Ego can't be destroyed but controlled.
Just be aware of your thoughts in random and radical situations....you can hear him grumble....if he wants you to react at something....tell him to do it....always remember he is useless without your reaction! dont react...think and then respond

I'm listening to this at the gym right now and it makes so much freaking sense. Sometimes we hold back because we don't wanna look weak or silly in front of others. But if we continue to handicap ourselves and let these things control us than we will continue to remain weak But if we change what we fear, what controls us, then we can make decisions that will strengthen us. and we will change what we are able to control with our newfound strength

Sam Gold isnt Satan...he is the EGO...ego has allowed humanity to blame all of their ills...why would man take total responsibility for their wrong doings, ways and actions when they can put all of the blame on an invisible entity...when its true identity is flesh and blood...the ego is mans worst enemy...
You're right and wrong. The director intended it to be the ego and the inner battle, cons and chess(conscious), vs the blinding ego. However, this isn't our original nature. There's a very real adversary and the bible is real whether you or the director is aware of it. May you find the other portion of this truth.
