I remember back in like 2015 when they were the main power source for vapes, people were using them in mechanical mods which was ridiculous because many of the cheap and mass produced "vape grade" 18650s did not have vent holes in the event of an out of control reaction meaning you basically were walking around with a pipe bomb on you at all times

    • it doesn't explode at all. it fires off like a hobby rocket. and its actually pretty safe as long as you dont smash it with a hammer. soft pack LiPo's are more vulnerable to impacts and can set off while charging. commonly used in drones and power banks. i've seen a video of someone flying into a tree and setting off the battery. i myself has had one set off while charging, but i was smart and charged them in a LiPo safe. i've NEVER had a 18650 go off while charging or by mishandling. of course i dont smash them with a hammer on accident either.

    • Not even 4.2 these chells should be lithium iron phosphate which have a nominal of 3.2v and i think a charge voltage of 3.8. Lithium iron phosphate batteries are used for their way longer charge and discharge cycle count so that the car doesnt get useless in 3y of usage because of battery degradation. But they also have a little less capacity because of said lower voltage.

  • Just a heads-up - your chargers were overcharging those cells, which in itself can be a fire risk with the specific cells Tesla use. The datasheets for basically any LiMnCo cell (aka Lithium Manganese Cobalt as this is their internal chemistry) recommend you never charge past 4.2 volts for these cells. Short-term, a 4.5v charge is not going to cause a fire, but long-term you are absolutely wrecking the cell's ability to hold a charge. Not that it's a big issue here since the endgoal is *BOOM*, but yeah. If you use those chargers for any degree of RC battery or cell recovery / charging I'd strongly advise getting them calibrated to extend the life of your cells :) That aside. this is a well put together example for why safe handling is important with such energy dense cells. Nice work fellas! :)

    • i use a cheap $12.00 charger I got off Amazon for charging my 18650 vape batteries. I've been using the charger now for about 3 yrs and the same batteries. It does say it has overcharge protection but really who knows, but 3 yrs later and both the charger and batteries still work great. On another note I wonder how well these Tesla 18650 batteries would work in a vape, my vape batteries are 3.6V

      @NonLegitNation2@NonLegitNation2 Жыл бұрын
    • @@NonLegitNation2 They should be able to cope with the high discharge rates of a vape pen - You would though, if you were obtaining some, have to get wrappers for them because the cells Panasonic sell to Tesla are unwrapped and they remain so even after they've been made into a power module. ;)

    • @@DigBipper188 I Googled it, and the only place supposedly selling them is Aliexpress and tb 100% honest I don't know if I would trust that they are legit Tesla batteries, they were selling them for $2.60 a piece with is a great price, but really if Panasonic is the one that actually makes them then I might as well just buy Panasonic branded batteries. Plus I didn't catch how many mAh these tesla batteries were, I currently have a set of LG 3000mAh and a set of HOHM Depot 3005mAh batteries.

  • These batteries were severely overcharged at 4.5v, normal lithium batteries like in laptops or phones, charge at a max of around 4.2~4.35v. Batteries in Cars however use Lithium Iron Phosphate batteries which have a full charge voltage of only 3.6v, this is because these iron batteries hold up alot longer and to more charge cycles meaning cars can last for more than just 2-3y like your smartphone, the downside is that they are slightly less power dense because of the lower voltage because of the different matterials used. Im not debunking this video, its actually quite a real risk, tho i think the outcomes of these results may have been slightly more voilent than if its charged normally. Tho still much potential energy.
