Props to the cameraman. he has balls of steel to walk TOWARDS a BATTERY THAT CAN DETONATE LIKE HE DOES IT IN HIS SLEEP!
it doesn't explode it just fires off like a hobby rocket motor. as long as you dont try to grab it with bare hands or shove it up your b hole when it goes off its not that bad. its not a grenade.

Yea
18650s are dangerous. I remember back in like 2015 when they were the main power source for vapes, people were using them in mechanical mods which was ridiculous because many of the cheap and mass produced "vape grade" 18650s did not have vent holes in the event of an out of control reaction meaning you basically were walking around with a pipe bomb on you at all times

The more I watch this, the more cautious i am about anything.... Semi- Explosive.
americans say goodbye to tesla
If it battery, it can explode. Like powerbank...or phone.
anything with energy is dangerous so
it doesn't explode at all. it fires off like a hobby rocket. and its actually pretty safe as long as you dont smash it with a hammer. soft pack LiPo's are more vulnerable to impacts and can set off while charging. commonly used in drones and power banks. i've seen a video of someone flying into a tree and setting off the battery. i myself has had one set off while charging, but i was smart and charged them in a LiPo safe. i've NEVER had a 18650 go off while charging or by mishandling. of course i dont smash them with a hammer on accident either.

Max charge voltage for this kind of cells is 4.2 volts. You've overcharged them and some part of the heavy reactions might be caused by this.
Yep
🤓☝️
Not even 4.2 these chells should be lithium iron phosphate which have a nominal of 3.2v and i think a charge voltage of 3.8. Lithium iron phosphate batteries are used for their way longer charge and discharge cycle count so that the car doesnt get useless in 3y of usage because of battery degradation. But they also have a little less capacity because of said lower voltage.
You guys seriously should do a video of a punctured battery igniting another intact battery next to it. The risk of one battery cell alone isn't all too terribly dangerous, but the risk of a chain reaction is rather severe...
if several cells get dented/punctured in, say, a crash too.

2 massive issues 1. Teslas mostly dont use 18650's 2. Regular lithium ion cells are meant to be charged to 4.2v, you are severely overcharging them resulting in more energetic reactions 3. Teslas dont use regular lion cells, they use lifepo4 cells which are way safer

“Today, I learned how to burn down my house”
this is a phantastic video, thank you, very interesting!!
DO A “can it BLEND” for a blender full of tesla batteries 😂 please!!!
18650's arent supposed to be charged to 4.5V, only up to 4.2V, it may be the cause of a more violent explosion
Definitely, 4.5v is way too high for an 18650. That puts a lot of stress on the battery and will make it unstable.

Love those bricks you put around it, just turn a battery into a shrapnel bomb.
Just a heads-up - your chargers were overcharging those cells, which in itself can be a fire risk with the specific cells Tesla use. The datasheets for basically any LiMnCo cell (aka Lithium Manganese Cobalt as this is their internal chemistry) recommend you never charge past 4.2 volts for these cells. Short-term, a 4.5v charge is not going to cause a fire, but long-term you are absolutely wrecking the cell's ability to hold a charge. Not that it's a big issue here since the endgoal is *BOOM*, but yeah. If you use those chargers for any degree of RC battery or cell recovery / charging I'd strongly advise getting them calibrated to extend the life of your cells :) That aside. this is a well put together example for why safe handling is important with such energy dense cells. Nice work fellas! :)
i use a cheap $12.00 charger I got off Amazon for charging my 18650 vape batteries. I've been using the charger now for about 3 yrs and the same batteries. It does say it has overcharge protection but really who knows, but 3 yrs later and both the charger and batteries still work great. On another note I wonder how well these Tesla 18650 batteries would work in a vape, my vape batteries are 3.6V
@@NonLegitNation2 They should be able to cope with the high discharge rates of a vape pen - You would though, if you were obtaining some, have to get wrappers for them because the cells Panasonic sell to Tesla are unwrapped and they remain so even after they've been made into a power module. ;)
@@DigBipper188 I Googled it, and the only place supposedly selling them is Aliexpress and tb 100% honest I don't know if I would trust that they are legit Tesla batteries, they were selling them for $2.60 a piece with is a great price, but really if Panasonic is the one that actually makes them then I might as well just buy Panasonic branded batteries. Plus I didn't catch how many mAh these tesla batteries were, I currently have a set of LG 3000mAh and a set of HOHM Depot 3005mAh batteries.

I worked at the gigafactory in reno and I can attest to the volatility of these, there are “dunk tanks” everywhere in the factory for packs that short, they get dunked for 24 hours to make sure it won’t explode!!
"with a make shift shank he made while serving time" lol....that was fonking hilarious.
I was about to say “ima put that in my controller, see how many days it lasts” But then he put the AA battery in comparison to the Tesla battery and I’m like “oh shoot that’s really big!”
hAHA
I was thinking that haha
Hahaha lmao
There are AA li-ion batteries you can buy but the voltage is way too high for a device that is designed to be used with AA batteries so the controller is just going to break itself if you use them.
And if they get used without a protector circuit when they die they can explode
I love the shaky video with the puncture test lol
4.5V OMG even HV cells avec up to 4.35V max, usually 4,2 or 4.15V is 100% OCV. It's slow but at 4,5V the chemistry is already reacting! FYI your iMax chargers are fakes one, the original brand doesn't produce the build-in with power supply (I got issues with the fake one so consider this seriously ^^)

4.5V? Interesting
"slightly" overcharged
UBERCHARGE READY
@@antonw.415 slightly !?🤨 its more than slightly, at this voltage its already dangerous, they heat up and can blow at any moment, charging voltage is 4.2v ( and 4.3v is the maximum limit because of possible component tolerance)Julien.
@@julien1997a i know, this is, why i put it in " " It means that it's ironic and a total understatement. I'm well aware of the dangers of completely overcharged 18650s ;-)
Funny part Tesla don't use 18650 they use 21700 😂😂
you guys have a really good channel, you deserve way more attention! 👍
These batteries were severely overcharged at 4.5v, normal lithium batteries like in laptops or phones, charge at a max of around 4.2~4.35v. Batteries in Cars however use Lithium Iron Phosphate batteries which have a full charge voltage of only 3.6v, this is because these iron batteries hold up alot longer and to more charge cycles meaning cars can last for more than just 2-3y like your smartphone, the downside is that they are slightly less power dense because of the lower voltage because of the different matterials used. Im not debunking this video, its actually quite a real risk, tho i think the outcomes of these results may have been slightly more voilent than if its charged normally. Tho still much potential energy.
