    @goh-chez@goh-chez6 ай бұрын
    • No, it's because of what it does to the bear. More generally, all leg-hold traps with teeth are illegal in US because it's more likely that the animal chews or wrings off the caught paw. They just cause unnecessary pain and suffering to the animal, with the possibility of not even actually catching it. Padded and offset leg traps are generally allowed in North America (though mostly not elsewhere in the world) because they're more likely to catch the animal, and because they don't cause permanent harm if for example a wrong animal is caught.

Had they not been annealed, they would have maintained their 100% compression. Not to mention the fact that teeth on the jaws are fundamentally frowned upon by any true trappers & outdoorsman.. thank God they outlawed the teeth on the trap jaws Nationwide scores of years ago. I was just waiting for the unsprung trap to start slowly closing with him inside it, or for one of those teeth to fly off completely, or for him to absolutely mangle his leg while stepping in or out of it, or for some shrapnel of whatever he was shredding to cut someone up, or for the entire machine to explode, sending metal and teeth and parts and coil springs flying everywhere, etc. etc... lol. That being said, I'm still so glad that people are out there making weird and wacky stuff like this and sharing it for the world to see. Now, thanks to TheBackyardScientist, next time I encounter a problem in my life in which building my own incredibly over-sized and over-powered bear trap is the only solution, I'll already know exactly what NOT to do in every situation!

    @JONES300offi@JONES300offi6 ай бұрын

Spring traps are designed to hold whatever’s trapped there. It’s uncomfortable but not painful. The damage you might think you’ve seen, come from animals struggling and fighting to break free with their teeth.
