Lots of people were commenting that the stock WRX oil pan allows oil to stray from the pickup tube under hard cornering like track days, which can be solved with better baffling and more capacity like the Killer B pan. Probably would have saved them a few engines by preventing oil starvation that results in worn/spun bearings.

  • I half rolled my 06 wrx in poor conditions last year on November 11th 2021 at 257k miles. I didn't have the funds to repair the roof and A-pillar but I had my spare 04 2.5rs shell that was WRX swapped by the previous owner. Sometime in October a couple months back I finally got the motivation to see if the engine was still saveable, did an oil change, primed the oil system and after plugging the fuel relay back in she fired right over. Ran her through a few heatcycles to rule out any possible gremlins and she checked out. Still felt excruciatingly hopeless considering it was the factory longblock that I refreshed the heads on at 239k and added some reliability focused upgrades/mods. When I drained the oil I was pleasantly surprised to find no shavings or excessive metal indicating any failure. Coolant was old but clean of any foreign contaminants So ive been in the process of swapping my 06's engine, drivetrain, subframe's, engine/chassis harness and full interior (dash and all) into the 04 shell after doing a full teardown on that one too. I've owned my 06 since 2015, she's my heart and soul and ever since i wrecked her ive been lost. So I revived her into a new body so she can live on and be alive once more. I'm so close to finishing the swap, at the end of today she will breathe life once again after the seats are installed, rear subframe, drivetrain, engine, and new whiteline suspension components. Yeah Subarus get a bad rep, but they tend to find THEIR owners. Ones who will love them unconditionally and take care of them. You can still have so much fun and get so much enjoyment out of these cars but the important points to achieve that are PRIORITIZE PREVENATIVE MAINTENANCE AND RELIABILITY FOCUSED SUPPORTING MODS. You have to start with a solid foundation before you can build on it.

  • Few things you guys needed to know before jumping into a subaru platform. These cars are usually reliable at stock power, and the ej engines start to run into issues when you increase the power without proper support mods + good tune. When you bring it to the track, there are a few things that need to be addressed right the way. 1st, Oil temperature issue, boxer engines make a lot of heat, and they heat up the oil real quick. So, getting an air to oil cooler is highly recommended. 2nd, unlike straight 4 configuration engines, gravity does not help boxer engines drain back the oil as well as the straight 4 engines. So it's best to have a larger baffled wet sump to keep the oil at the pickup tube. 3rd, ej25's pickup tube is known to crack easily. Hence, you see lots of aftermarket companies sell baffle oil pan + pickup tube as a package deal to address this issue. 4th, it's just the nature of a turbo charged engine, where lots of positive crank case pressure is being built up. Such that factory PCV system doesn't really help combat recirculating oil fuel mixture back into the combustion chamber, which can potentially cause detonation during the compression stroke. So, ej turbo charged engines need an AOS system (catch can) to separate positive crank case air pressure from its oil fuel mixture. With all the mods, ej engine would become quite reliable until you run into older ej engine's gasket issues or the newer ej engine's ringland issues at a high boost. But what I concern most about the next issue would be the dodgy wrx gear box. Unlike the sti gear box, the base wrx gear box is built of Swiss cheese, so now that you guys are running at high power output, the dodgy gear box will give eventually. You're warned.

  • 12:20 As a Subaru owner, I sincerely hope Low Car's center differential is still good after towing like that. The owner's manual recommends flatbed towing, but allows for manual transmission models to be towed with all four wheels still on the ground with the transmission in neutral. If you tow it like you did with the front wheels in the air you will cause the viscous center differential to spin and heat up. Good luck with the rest of this series. Hopefully nothing else goes wrong.
