$3,500 Single Turbo Kit vs. $8,100 Twin Turbo Kit | HiLow

We bought two identical Nissan 350z’s and have been modifying them to be FUN, daily drivers that you can take to the track. Team Hi (James Pumphrey & Zach Jobe) get the expensive parts and Team Low (Nolan Sykes & Aaron Parker) get the cheap ones. Then we test them to see which components are actually worth spending the money on.
If you want more power out of your Z, you really have to go forced induction. Which basically means, forcing more air into the engine to get more combustion. So in this episode we're installing turbochargers.
Hi Team went with a Jim Wolf Technologies twin turbo kit. It’s high quality across the board. Best materials, it’s been through lots of R&D, everything should bolt up easily. But it’s $8000 DOLLARS! That’s more than we paid for the actual car! Can that possibly be worth it?
It comes with two Garrett GT25 turbos. Garrett is one of the most trusted brands of turbo. It also comes with all the piping, plumbing and pieces you could ever ask for. Sometimes with these kits, the plumbing won’t fit quite right so you’ll find yourself having to do fabrication or calling your friend who knows how to weld. But with this expensive kit, theoretically everything should bolt right up and we won’t have to get our Tinker Boyz on. Part of that $8000 price tag.
It was designed to be an OEM+ set-up with OEM reliability in mind, which means it shouldn’t require a lot of attention from you once its in--another benefit. It comes with its’ own piggyback box which talks with the car’s ECU or computer, and the right one can save you a lot of time and effort.
These turbos are good for up to 530 hp, which is beneficial in two ways. If you do choose to go FULL hot boi down the line, you won’t need to upgrade your turbos, you can just keep these. The other benefit is that because these are way more than what we’re going to be throwing at them, they’re not likely to be a failure point.
Team Low went with a Rev9 turbo kit, purchased on Amazon for $2400. It’s a single turbo kit. It comes with a turbonetics 60-1 turbo and a turbonetics evolution 38mm external wastegate. That’s one of the reasons we chose this kit. The turbocharger itself is the part of any turbo kit that is the most likely to fail. So even though this kit is “cheap”, I know with a name-brand, at least the turbo itself should be fine.
This kit only includes the hard parts and doesn’t come with any software to help tell the ECU what’s going on. So in addition to the kit, we also had to buy an UpRev software license.
We’re gonna show you our super long journey to get these things installed, then we dyno them to see who makes more power!

Just goes to show unless you can solve problems yourself and have good mechanic experience and understand how stuff works buy a real kit. I've gotten eBay stuff because I can make my own stuff I know how to think outside the box and deal with problems. But I would not recommend it for most people and this is a great example why heck even with a nice $8,000 name brand kit they had problems. I don't think I've ever heard of anyone having an install that went perfect on any kind of aftermarket boost. turbos are the worst though because of all the exhaust routing and pipes and oil lines the easiest is positive displacement superchargers and actually I think they're the best for street car and nothing beats supercharger wine even a blow off valve whoosh

I was truly on my ass when i asked him after he sold it if he ever took it to a shop to get that crack resolved and he laughed and told me “Nah it didnt give me any issues after that concerning the crack” but I’ve also seen some really unorthodox stuff that people do to their 18 wheelers to keep em goin

      @PnTNecrosis@PnTNecrosis4 жыл бұрын
    • @@PnTNecrosis disagreed with your first statement and spot on with the rest. Less common are the days of men requiring a modicum of knowledge to maintain a vehicle - easier to just pay someone down the street to look after it regardless of competence (or just buy a new car every 5 years, which is what the industry demands). My husband, a mechanic of 20+ years, and I just saw our oldest son graduate from auto tech school. He is vastly more competent and successful than his classmates after 15+ years of getting bitched at in the shop. But he and even my husband, a proven master mechanic, make mistakes and even for their varied but proven (via their quiet victories over stupid fucking car problems), make dunce moves on a regular basis. The dudes in this video are young enough to have no substantial mastery of the art that is tending to and transforming consumer vehicles into boast-worthy beasts, but ya got to give them credit for their humility and honesty in showing their numerous fuck ups in each episode's task. I'm not naturally mechanically inclined (and my mechanic of a dad failed to consider his daughter might want to learn this stuff). There are some mistakes I saw immediately in the videos, but as a learning casual tinkerer, I say rock on to these dudes to do what they're doing for the obvious purpose of informing themselves (as techs of varying skill levels) and amateur car enthusiast viewers along the way. Tl;dr - they ain't perfect, but they're on the right track and good on 'em for it.

  • I'm a little late to the party, but I really love your guys' work! I'm a hoonigan fanboy so ultimately donut has crossed my eyes and am getting into your guys' stuff! Different vibe from the boys at hoonigan, but I love the hi-low builds and in depth product testing. Very informative and fun to watch. You have gained a loyal follower. Keep up the good work, and for the love of God, put some damn 2j's in those Nissans. They'll probably run better. Or even ls's. From personal experience, Nissan motors are a little on the shittier side when it comes to reliability.

  • I know that feeling. Doing all the work on something, and then moment of truth...will it start. No. It won't start. Aw hell. Now what. So much work, and now we have to undo some of it, figure out where to start figuring out what the problem is, and then more figuring out on how to fix it. Rarely one gets lucky, like maybe a blown fuse or something. I feel your pain. I know this was a long time ago, but my heart goes out to you guys here.

    • naw dude, if you do it right it's just as reliable as any other vehicle, correct and proper tuning and the right hardware is paramount and not half assing anything or whats the point, do the research, look at what others have done, come up with a well rounded plan and you are golden, stuff break and doesn't work for a reason, it just doesn't happen unless you do not account for it.
