    • Here’s the thing. OEMs do a ton of research into making their products work in a huge range of conditions. 99% of newish cars will start no problem, from -20-140°F. Now, think of how many aftermarket (non-OE suppliers) manufacturers have the resources to do the same. Lots of cheap upgrades are garbage.

  • Reminder to everyone who mods: the OEM parts on your car are of a certain quality, and unless buying high quality aftermarket parts, modding your car is just replacing high quality with garbage. There’s definitely a time and place and pricepoint for modding. On my Miata, I bought a “Momo Italia” $10 shift knob (well, it’s actually a 4-5” long cylinder shape?). It attached firmly but after a few days, I was just not digging the feel. I then bought a $99 Voodoo shift knob which I had on my other Miatas. So much better. On the WRX, the steering wheel is fine. A cheap aftermarket one is dangerous. Remember Donut’s “real or fake” episode where they destroyed a fake wheel in seconds? Wouldnt want that on the track. Same for crap shift knob and plastic pedals. Low car could have “dumpster dived” for high car’s Cobb shift knob for free. That said, disappointed low car didn’t go with those crappy “bare feet” pedals as seen on 1970’s vans and whatnot. Would have at least been worth the amusement.

    • As an MS3 owner, I feel you on OEM usually being better than most mods of the same part. Aftermarket support is already no good for it, but what is there is usually way worse than OEM most of the time (OEM parts for my car are fuckin expensive tbf). There're exceptions both ways, of course.

My stock shift knob was so heavily worn from the previous owner, and the size of it didn't quite fit my hand. With having to replace the transmission due to wear, and with every aftermarket shift knob available for cheap being garbage, I ended up discovering that a Civic EG has the same thread pitch for its shift knob as my Xterra, only the knob itself is smaller. Got one from the local junkyard for a fiver and it's been a perfectly snug fit since. It even looks like it should be stock. Thanks for doing this episode. I'm shocked at half of the car stuff I see getting sold these days, so it's nice having real-world use reviews for the good and the bad.

  • Hey guys, love your videos! This series would be more engaging if Low car had more time for research. Because that would be more reflective of a real world situation. That is, if you have a lot of money you can just buy top-of-the-line, but if you don’t have a lot of money, you have to spend your time figuring out what’s going to work best. So it makes sense for high car to only have five minutes. But it doesn’t make any sense for low car to have to figure out some piece of junk to buy in five minutes also.

  • I know it would be a lot to ask for, and it likely not to happen due to the increased cost and complexity, but this episode highlights what Ive been thinking for a while. I feel like we should have 3 cars, a hi-mid-lo series. For example with the pedals and shift knob. The cheapest of the cheap were literally no better than garbage, and the hi car expensive parts were so unreasonable most people wouldnt even consider it. There should be a middle ground, or the parts most people will really use. Low car shows the poor quality and potential danger of the cheapest parts, Mid car is an average real build, with budget quality parts, and Hi car is the insane, top of the line parts that most cant or wont afford. That would really highlight the parts where you dont want to go for the cheapest stuff, but also show where the most expensive are unnecessary. As it is, Hi car will win almost everything, because every part installed is that much better, and more expensive. However, the difference between a mid range part and top end might be negligible, in which case Mid car would be the best option, where otherwise it would be Hi car. For example, A $300 set of pedal covers are probably just a nice feeling as the $600 ones, but that comparison is missing here.

  • From my personal experience it’s best to get close to oem shift knobs and pedals. In my Mazda 3 I did aftermarket shift knobs and nrg pedals. Needless to say they don’t hold up or stay on the vehicle very well. For my mr2 turbo I went with a stock 93 leather shift knob that is pretty weighted and did some oem pedals with the rubber inserts. Both feel and function 1000% times better. Overall go for weighted knobs and pedals that will got over the metal or drill on opposed to ones that just attach to the existing pedals

Because yah if you just do the cheapest thing you can find with little to no research it’s a good chance it’s going to be garbage.
