Cannon Restoration + Test firing
Restoration of an antique salute cannon from around 1860’s. I will restore this beautiful treasure and repair all the necessary defects and test shoot it with 3 salute cannon shells.
ABOUT THE SALUTE CANNON
This is an antique salute cannon bought at an auction here in Sweden. The cannon is from Hällefors Bruk in Sweden and this cannon is dated to be around the mid 19th century. The cannon is made of cast iron and is in two parts, the cannon stand and the cannon barrel. The two parts weigh around 14 kilos.
Hällefors Bruk was founded in 1652 and is well known all over the world for making solid cannons used for defense and battle. They are also known for making iron pipes, iron stoves, cast iron pans and a lot of other iron stuff.
THE RESTORATION PROCESS
I started by inspecting the salute cannon and directly took it to sandblasting. I sandblasted the cannon barrel and the stand and used regular sandblasting sand as my media with high (6.5 bar) air pressure.
After sandblasting I removed a lot of very fragile metal from the barrel using my new flexible shaft machine. I also removed a lot of excess iron from the casting process to improve the overall look of the cannon.
There were some marks on the cannon barrel that could indicate that the cannon once was deactivated and later activated again. But it was sold to me as a functioning salute cannon.
I did face a little problem with the cannon barrel though. After so many years standing outside in the Swedish harsh weather, the last 20 millimeters of the cannon bore was totally blocked by rust. That means it was unable to fire salute shots in this condition and had to be repaired.
So I drilled all the rust out of the bore with a very long cobalt drill and the supporting tool that I have made for this occasion to support the long drill and to ensure that the bore would be drilled 100% right so it could function correctly again.
There were a few holes in some very thin cast iron at the bottom of the barrel plus the bottom was hollow. So welding it was not an option. I decided to fill the whole bottom of the barrel with tin. And this repair turned out really well. After this I thoroughly cleaned the bore and I soaked the barrel in motor oil for a few days to ensure that there was oil in every little corner of the cannon. I painted the barrel black using heat and linseed oil.
The cannon stand was in really solid cast iron and painted and therefore in OK condition after all these years out in the weather. I did some minor grinding and refreshed the H for Hällefors, which was engraved in the metal a long time ago. After that I powder coated the stand in green army color and painted the bottom black.
I also cleaned the small cannonballs which came with the cannon. NOTE: they are only for decorative purposes since they don’t fit into the cannon bore.
I filled some old fireworks in the cannon and did 3 blank salute shots (all shot were blanks and I was using maximum 8 gram black powder) in a very safe and uninhabited area environment. So do not test this in your garage, please! Even 8 grams of black powder can be very powerful and cause serious injury and fire if used wrong.

You have high experience and workmanship, as long as I wish to do the same as you, but I do not have much patience. I hope that you will visit Egypt one day and host you with me.
Omg u look like the guy from breaking bad
Las marcas que tiene la base que conservaste también son defectos en el proceso de moldeo en la fundición , al igual que la parte que rellenaste con metal ! Saludos buen trabajo !

Thank you for watching 😉👍
I told my wife she should preserve the beautiful signs of old age like AR does in his videos I'm now watching Awesome Restorations from my garage on a futon because she threw me out again 😊
This video brought back a lot of memories. I spent 16 years re-enacting the American War of Independence, much of it serving cannons. As I watched the video, all I could think of was the loading and firing sequence. All of the cannons I served were beautiful reproductions, brass and iron. Good video....now go buy a swivel gun!

Great job on the restoration of the antique salute cannon! It's amazing to see how it went from a rusted and neglected piece of history to a beautiful and functional cannon once again. Awesome job, and yes other than Animal, Beaker was one of my favorites. Had to comment when you asked if we knew those guys. I enjoyed the work you've done and the time you've put into actually sharing the process of what it takes to restore things. Lots of prep and thought goes into the proper restoration work that most people overlook.
Beaker is really a fun character :) very glad you liked the video thanks for watching
When measuring the inside bore of a muzzle loading anything, and the bore doesn't reach the touch hole, you should make sure that the obstruction isn't a ball with powder behind it. Many muzzle loading guns were put away after failing to fire and found many years later still loaded. Drilling into an old load could be very exciting.
What can I say, Martin... Every antique artifact that you restore comes back to life. And I'm sure that whoever owned them in the past, wherever they may be, bare a smile on their face. Thank you, Maestro!!!
thank you so much I really appreciate it :)

Yet another excellent restoration by the Awesome Martin. I love that you left the old degradations in the material to show the age of the piece. The repair of the cannon itself was on point. Keep up the good work Martin. I always anticipate your next project.

Thank you keeping the antique look to the casting. I think that makes it all the better when it looks old (because it is) and it is still functioning! Great restoration as usual! Feeling bad for Beaker though🤣🤣
many thanks :) Beaker is ok again now and ready for new adventures 😊

Why were canons black, anyway?
Becuse it made it easier to see and load it after shot
Because they were blued to keep from rusting. It’s a heating and oil process with the iron that stops rusting that leads to decay when at sea on naval ships of on the battle field with rain.
Liking and commenting on your videos 😂 feels just like a routine habit ❤❤

I was happy to see that you didn't attempt to fire those bearings. While I'm not a metallurgist, the danger in shooting those after doing a soft metal repair and the condition of the cast iron would have me running for cover.
I can't believe you keep all these really high quality, morden and possibly volatile chemicals in old-timey glass corked bottles like you're a hardware store Witch Doctor

Always fun to watch your videos, quality time well spent! Also, always liked the look of these old cannons, so it was a bonus, you could say! If you are given the chance of restoring a real-size cannon, that would bring a huge smile on your face (and ours!). Nice one (again)!

having an 1820 9lber from Carron steel works, re sleeved with seamless high pressure steam pipe, epoxied and with lock pins with a end pug welded and pinned, , and rebouched the touch hole, made from a brass bolt screw fitted and epoxy, ,has been running now for 25 years 250/350 gram charge 1f or cannon powder in a cartridge ,can make a quill with paper straws if you wish to run that way ,touch hole should be .22 cal in your case smaller that way loose less of the charge and burn out the touch hole great job done ,my last was a 6lb navel, rats nests in the barrel rust, had sat in a chook run for years , and like you had to rebore basically, made a mandrel ,fitted a plug and took hours with a 300rpm very large drill and kero, and different grit belts made to fit the mandrel ,exterior with a small grinder ,flapper discs again took hours while sitting in a cradle weighed about 1 a ton , never again
I like the workshop fridges and their contents :) All workshops should be equipped thus

years ago my friend took his parents cannon sitting on the mantlepiece and proceeded to shoot firecrackers from it. He twisted the fuses of 2 🧨 firecrackers and inserted one of them in the cannon. The other firecracker hung outside the cannon attached to the fuse. when he left the fuse, the first fire cracker propelled the second fire cracker 20 yards away, and exploded giving the effect that a cannonball was shot out of a cannon.😊🇨🇦👍
magnificent work.. What a gem of a canyon. Greetings from Andalusia
thank you so much
I remember kids could order similar cannons from a comic book ad up to the 1960's. Of course, yours is much older & deserves reverence. Well done!
thank you so much
You are braver than I am. Given the flaws in the casting, and the fact that the touchhole was not bored through, I'm pretty sure it was not intended as a firing weapon. I've worked with black powder cannons, and I personally would stand waaaaaay back and behind something solid before I touched it off. If you ever intend to live fire it, I would strongly suggest that you sleeve the bore with steel and don't use meal powder as a charge. I recommend no smaller than FFg. The smaller the grain, the faster it burns and the more pressure it produces. Live firing that with meal powder will almost certainly blow it to pieces. Also, if you ever do this again, I would recommend boring the touchhole at an angle from the top down to the chamber rather than boring out the back of the chamber. Anything that weakens the breech is a bad thing. I did really like the use of Beaker on the charges!
thanks a lot for your comment. I have no intentions of firing it for real that is very illegal here in Sweden where I live :)
You’re a genius, man. That flip work bench is worth it’s weight in gold!
